RU OK? My journey through Depression and Anxiety

  • On R U OK Day, 2020, I went live to discuss my journey with Depression and Anxiety. Although I was trembling with fear as I pressed the live button today, I am glad I did. As someone who is considered quite a “happy, cheerful” person, I feel it is important that I speak of my experience with Depression and Anxiety. The more we speak about this, the more we remove stigmas around mental health, the more lives we can save.
    2020 is a tricky year to say the least. It’s ok to not be feeling ok. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. You are not a burden.
    Today is a day to realise that there are questions we can ask beyond “are you ok?”
    In my experience, my answer to this question was almost always “I’m fine”. What it equated to was more like “no I’m not fine but I’m incredibly embarrassed about it and I just need to find a way to get out of it so I don’t burden anyone.”
    I would never ask for help, so I am grateful that some of my loved ones would ask “do you want me to come visit?” Which was always a much easier question to say “yes” to.
    Just knowing that someone was there, that someone cared was incredibly helpful during this period.
    If you are not ok, know that this is fine. It is nothing to be embarrassed about. You are not a burden.
    I am not a health professional in any way, I’ve just experienced the dark, cold grip of depression and the feeling of losing hope. I now have a tool belt I use to help me out whenever I feel it’s grip try to embrace me again.
