It’s been said but you guys should check out her other ballads, (they have live versions) “Goodbye” and “Anymore.” Also her last album, she did a video for all the tracks! This is an old tune that Wheein covered as a solo song for a kdrama OST last year. Surprised that Melia didn't seem to have heard Wheein's breathiness previously. That airy breathiness is her signature style of singing. I think there were two additional things that influenced Wheein's vocal choices - the arc of the song and the song as a conversation. She starts off very soft and tentative and he responds with more confidence, establishing different personalities in both the singing and the relationship. In the final chorus she is singing with more of her full voice as the song story climaxes so the change in her singing mirrors the arc of the love story they're telling. Mamamoo is one of the best pop groups I've heard at using dynamics in both individual phrases and as part of the overall song story.

I personally love love love her lower breathy low notes. It really gives me goosebumps. Also for the style of singing you prefer I would highly recommend her song anymore ( color live)
also it's unique compared to singers that sing with clarity, etc and it's perfect for ballads and r&b. Minseok has powerful vocals, but he will never be able to sing 25 or Candy as good as Wheein does, and in Love Shot she goes even lower than these 2 songs.

I wanted to say that Wheein sings this song in a more breathy way as an stylistic choice, it's a testament to the feeling she wants to convey of the public, I like to call this song a 'mourning song' because of it's history (the original singer died at the age of 19, weeks before releasing his 2nd cd which contained this song, indeed if you see the original MV of this song it shows images of his funeral) that's why this became an instant classic song, and is not only sad, like is really a SAD song, like heartbreaking, and Wheein did a wonderful job recreating that feeling on her cover OST; also she is trying to harmonize with him a lot and I think she shouldn't have, bcs he's such a good singer that her using her full voice wouldn't made a difference (but Wheein is called the queen of collaborations bcs she does exactly that, harmonize with any type of voice and singer) I felt that that truly takes a lot of that feeling she puts on the song, like she is opening up your heart at putting it back together, that made her version loved by the public, an absolute succes. I loved the duet, but while I also think Minseok is a fascinating and fantastic singer (I fell in love with his voice) I think it really gave another feel the song, that it really doesn't get trough us like the Wheein version did, so that said I obviously prefer Wheein's version, breathy tone and all. The reaction video you guys did for mamamoo was my first reactor video too and I absolutely loved it! So excited that you guys did another reaction video for wheein. I was already blown away when I first heard mamamoo and your analysis and breakdown really helps me to appreciate their vocals even more, the techniques that they use, where and how their voices shine, and how well they blend with each other. Wheein’s “anymore” live is great and will give you more of an idea of her voice. She also did this song no more tears by herself live which I prefer cause she didn’t have to worry about blending or holding back a bit to match.

This is the second song of the performance. First Wheein does a solo cover of EXO's loveshot. Both in that and this she's using her lower range a lot more than we usually see. Pure speculation, I think she chose to do it because she does spend most of her time in Mamamoo on the high end. In this song I think she liked being the low to his high. I hope you will do other solo performance of the other Mamamoo members. Solar has a couple of recent OSTs on her solarsido channel. Adrenaline and Bluebird that would be good.

Not related to Wheein, but I would honestly love if you guys reacted to the “battle” rounds on the Voice and chose your personal winners for those performances based on technique/personal preferences! Love the fact that you mention that personal preference doesn’t necessarily equal better and love that you’re encouraging people to consider the way they want to sing! I feel like my core philosophy is identical to yours, but because I’m influenced by so many different styles of music, I want to explore shaping my ‘natural’ voice in different contexts that make the most sense for the style of whatever song I’m singing. That way I sound and feel like me while also achieving a specific vision I had for the song! It’s really circumstantial - feels like the best of both worlds for myself!

I love the points you made around the 13-minute mark and onwards! A good number of the vocal teachers and coaches that I follow on social media (especially Instagram) are very big on how one should sing or "approach" specific segments of songs using different placements and it has made me quite insecure, thinking that if I can't approach the song the exact same way, then I'm not singing well at all. No shade or disrespect for those coaches and teachers of course (and I'm sure that some of them are advising with vocal health in mind, especially for songs that require a lot more effort and technique) but I just really appreciate your sentiments/views on it :) and you explained everything so well too. u can really see wheein's control on the last chorus as she sang with melomance, it's like she balances the volume of hers and his voice so she switches from breathy and full clear voice....she's amazing
ha, that 'just found another amazing singer' thing is actually pretty common with wheein... every single person she's ever worked with for collabs/features, every single artist she's suggested songs from... they're all incredible in their own fields (and she suggests a lot of western music, too) as for 'with my tears"... the song itself is a cover... she's done it on her own before for an ost to a drama, and now performing it together with the melomance singer (the pianist is the other member of melomance). hearing her sing that live on her own is incredible... and there are a few lives for it out there they've got several other songs either already out or coming out in the future with this show... i think they recorded it all at once but it's being shared out over several weeks. first we had wheein singing exo's "love shot" on her own (just with piano accompaniment), then this song... the most recent release so far is the two performing mamamoo's "starry night". really curious what we'll get in the future from them
Wheein is famous for her breathy voice and falsetto, but she could go full voice too...she did it a lot a lot in shows and concerts. Anyway, She also did a cover of EXO’s Love shot on this show, which I actually prefer more. I kinda wish you could react to Hwasa too, her Flying to the moon cover is great. P.S. Glad to hear you say "how you speak is how you sing". That's exactly how I want to sing. Kind of like speaking the melody but holding notes where it fits. Trying to get a feeling that I'm speaking the lyrics and it just happens to be to a melody. I really love your analysis and your channel has became one of my favorites. For this reaction, I like you two to talk about the breathness, closure of vocal cords, efficiency, resonance, subjective in music, and blending voices. As a physicist, I really appreciate that you pointed out that every person has different instrument to make voice and judging is based on preference/bias. Speaking of contrast to Wheein, inside Mamamoo, people first think about Solar as she uses aspiration less and does powerful belting often with more closure of vocal cords. Then, Hwasa does a lot of different things in between. It is always interesting to compare their voices and see how they switch techniques in different situactions. So, I would love to see more comparisons about their voices and detailed reactions for their solo projects. About preference, I like all of their voices but my preference of singing is when they sing more cleary, less airy, and good resonance as that is when I feel more emotionally connected. Besides my favorite Mamamoo, I also love the voice of MeloMance. I would love to see more reactions about them.
Melomance is one of my favorite groups in Korean music. The vocalist is Kim Minseok, and the other half is the pianist Donghwan. Minseok is probably one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. It's funny how voices and tastes work, I actually didn't like Melonmance voice at all, because I'm so used to Wheein's version of the song, his voice irritated me so much 😅 I can't deny it's unique, but I actually didn't like him at all, but I kept my thoughts on that on the original video, because I didn't want to be toxic. Nothing against him, his voice just wasn't of my taste, and you guys loved him so much, on the other hand, because I think art is subjective, like you guys said. I think sometimes the language barrier makes it hard for those that don't speak Korean as to why some songs sound "breathy", "whispery" during parts or soft. It is like this to make the lyrics shine. If you understand the lyrics, it really gives you goosebumps the way they sing it.

You guys are basically there when you say you hear overtones early on, it's because the guy is constantly in a very slight mix since the start. You can clearly hear he's in his mask but never in his full chest voice, starting his mix so low also makes his transitions seem seamless.

From her recent works you should totally check out Butterfly and Water color. Her range is astounding especially in Butterfly as she sings the male part in a lower register.
There is definitely Melodyne done on post-processing for the streaming cause koreans are very perfectionist. You can hear it working mostly on Minseok's (Melomance's singer) vibrato. But I agree with Chase that Minseok sings with some overtones which are great for mixing, working with that forward resonance.
I wonder if you can also do Day6. I have a feeling you will love them cos they have different singing styles but all together works so great. They're a korean band, like they play the guitars keyboard and drums and they all sing amazingly. hope you can check them out.

I personally love love love her lower breathy low notes. It really gives me goosebumps. Also for the style of singing you prefer I would highly recommend her song anymore ( color live)
also it's unique compared to singers that sing with clarity, etc and it's perfect for ballads and r&b. Minseok has powerful vocals, but he will never be able to sing 25 or Candy as good as Wheein does, and in Love Shot she goes even lower than these 2 songs.

I wanted to say that Wheein sings this song in a more breathy way as an stylistic choice, it's a testament to the feeling she wants to convey of the public, I like to call this song a 'mourning song' because of it's history (the original singer died at the age of 19, weeks before releasing his 2nd cd which contained this song, indeed if you see the original MV of this song it shows images of his funeral) that's why this became an instant classic song, and is not only sad, like is really a SAD song, like heartbreaking, and Wheein did a wonderful job recreating that feeling on her cover OST; also she is trying to harmonize with him a lot and I think she shouldn't have, bcs he's such a good singer that her using her full voice wouldn't made a difference (but Wheein is called the queen of collaborations bcs she does exactly that, harmonize with any type of voice and singer) I felt that that truly takes a lot of that feeling she puts on the song, like she is opening up your heart at putting it back together, that made her version loved by the public, an absolute succes. I loved the duet, but while I also think Minseok is a fascinating and fantastic singer (I fell in love with his voice) I think it really gave another feel the song, that it really doesn't get trough us like the Wheein version did, so that said I obviously prefer Wheein's version, breathy tone and all.

The reaction video you guys did for mamamoo was my first reactor video too and I absolutely loved it! So excited that you guys did another reaction video for wheein. I was already blown away when I first heard mamamoo and your analysis and breakdown really helps me to appreciate their vocals even more, the techniques that they use, where and how their voices shine, and how well they blend with each other. Wheein’s “anymore” live is great and will give you more of an idea of her voice. She also did this song no more tears by herself live which I prefer cause she didn’t have to worry about blending or holding back a bit to match.

This is the second song of the performance. First Wheein does a solo cover of EXO's loveshot. Both in that and this she's using her lower range a lot more than we usually see. Pure speculation, I think she chose to do it because she does spend most of her time in Mamamoo on the high end. In this song I think she liked being the low to his high. I hope you will do other solo performance of the other Mamamoo members. Solar has a couple of recent OSTs on her solarsido channel. Adrenaline and Bluebird that would be good.

Love the fact that you mention that personal preference doesn’t necessarily equal better and love that you’re encouraging people to consider the way they want to sing! I feel like my core philosophy is identical to yours, but because I’m influenced by so many different styles of music, I want to explore shaping my ‘natural’ voice in different contexts that make the most sense for the style of whatever song I’m singing. That way I sound and feel like me while also achieving a specific vision I had for the song! It’s really circumstantial - feels like the best of both worlds for myself!

A good number of the vocal teachers and coaches that I follow on social media (especially Instagram) are very big on how one should sing or "approach" specific segments of songs using different placements and it has made me quite insecure, thinking that if I can't approach the song the exact same way, then I'm not singing well at all. No shade or disrespect for those coaches and teachers of course (and I'm sure that some of them are advising with vocal health in mind, especially for songs that require a lot more effort and technique) but I just really appreciate your sentiments/views on it :) and you explained everything so well too.

u can really see wheein's control on the last chorus as she sang with melomance, it's like she balances the volume of hers and his voice so she switches from breathy and full clear voice....she's amazing
ha, that 'just found another amazing singer' thing is actually pretty common with wheein... every single person she's ever worked with for collabs/features, every single artist she's suggested songs from... they're all incredible in their own fields (and she suggests a lot of western music, too)
as for 'with my tears"... the song itself is a cover... she's done it on her own before for an ost to a drama, and now performing it together with the melomance singer (the pianist is the other member of melomance). hearing her sing that live on her own is incredible... and there are a few lives for it out there
they've got several other songs either already out or coming out in the future with this show... i think they recorded it all at once but it's being shared out over several weeks. first we had wheein singing exo's "love shot" on her own (just with piano accompaniment), then this song... the most recent release so far is the two performing mamamoo's "starry night". really curious what we'll get in the future from them

Wheein is famous for her breathy voice and falsetto, but she could go full voice too...she did it a lot a lot in shows and concerts. Anyway, She also did a cover of EXO’s Love shot on this show, which I actually prefer more.

Glad to hear you say "how you speak is how you sing". That's exactly how I want to sing. Kind of like speaking the melody but holding notes where it fits. Trying to get a feeling that I'm speaking the lyrics and it just happens to be to a melody. I haven't sung much in a while, though, and I've lost a lot of my technique but very resently I've started trying to get back into it. You guys just added to my inspiration to keep at it. Thanks!

I really love your analysis and your channel has became one of my favorites. For this reaction, I like you two to talk about the breathness, closure of vocal cords, efficiency, resonance, subjective in music, and blending voices. As a physicist, I really appreciate that you pointed out that every person has different instrument to make voice and judging is based on preference/bias. Speaking of contrast to Wheein, inside Mamamoo, people first think about Solar as she uses aspiration less and does powerful belting often with more closure of vocal cords. Then, Hwasa does a lot of different things in between. It is always interesting to compare their voices and see how they switch techniques in different situactions. So, I would love to see more comparisons about their voices and detailed reactions for their solo projects. About preference, I like all of their voices but my preference of singing is when they sing more cleary, less airy, and good resonance as that is when I feel more emotionally connected. Besides my favorite Mamamoo, I also love the voice of MeloMance. I would love to see more reactions about them.
Melomance is one of my favorite groups in Korean music. The vocalist is Kim Minseok, and the other half is the pianist Donghwan. Minseok is probably one of the best vocalists I've ever heard. You should definitely check out more from Melomance, Minseok is a power vocal and he was definitely holding back to fit Wheein's song and vibe. It's funny how voices and tastes work, I actually didn't like Melonmance voice at all, because I'm so used to Wheein's version of the song, his voice irritated me so much 😅 I can't deny it's unique, but I actually didn't like him at all, but I kept my thoughts on that on the original video, because I didn't want to be toxic. Nothing against him, his voice just wasn't of my taste, and you guys loved him so much, on the other hand, because I think art is subjective, like you guys said. But I agree, because Wheein it's so good at blending, she definitely held herself back to not outshine Melomance. Also, please react to Wheein on Begin Again signing Love Shot! She signs alone there and I feel she shines way more there!

One thing I realize about wheein is that she doesn’t like to oversing anyone I’m mean it’s good that she letting the other person shine but it’s doesn’t give her time shine
I think sometimes the language barrier makes it hard for those that don't speak Korean as to why some songs sound "breathy", "whispery" during parts or soft. It is like this to make the lyrics shine. If you understand the lyrics, it really gives you goosebumps the way they sing it.
agree i love korean ballad songs and i wish i already mastered korean language so that i can feel more when these talented vocalists sing. English translation doesn’t do justice to beautiful songs such as with my tears.

You guys are basically there when you say you hear overtones early on, it's because the guy is constantly in a very slight mix since the start. You can clearly hear he's in his mask but never in his full chest voice, starting his mix so low also makes his transitions seem seamless.

From her recent works you should totally check out Butterfly and Water color. Her range is astounding especially in Butterfly as she sings the male part in a lower register.
There is definitely Melodyne done on post-processing for the streaming cause koreans are very perfectionist.
You can hear it working mostly on Minseok's (Melomance's singer) vibrato. But I agree with Chase that Minseok sings with some overtones which are great for mixing, working with that forward resonance.

wheein is in mmm the spine and here she does it too, not because she can't shine more or whatever she chooses to do so the Song sounds better so the voice that accompanies it shines even more, this is one of the characteristics that I love the most about Jung Wheein, the song goes first regardless of the cost it has for her.
