I keep telling myself : Self, if Tom Waits is scheduled to perform live anywhere on any given day and i can still breathe, see, and drive a car, i’m-a be there. That’d be the perfect last act for this old broad. Can’t think of anyone else i would make the effort for, if i’m being honest. I have been damned lucky, been lotsa places, and watched i don’t know how many live performances by so many artists that i still find it hard to believe. But this one, he has to be last. Because there isn’t anyone better. Fingers crossed. Love yourselves, and each other.

Thanks for the upload. Those documentaries of Mr Waits with interlude are always a feast, at least for me! He is one of the best artists AND entertainer. Oh, at 27:40 this reminds me of: Her long hair black as a raven Oh, how we danced and you whispered to me You'll never be going back home....
Awsome - I did not know that he made a short movie in my beloved home city of Vienna, Austria, Central Europe. HE, Waits, is great and legendary- so is Vienna, too.
Tom Waits Sings & Tells Stories in "Tom Waits: A Day in Vienna", a 1979 Austrian film... "The film begins at a derelict gas station. A paper sign, peeling from the wall, warns in German that open flames and smoking are dangerous and strictly forbidden. In walks Tom Waits, smoking a cigarette. “This reminds me of a place I used to work in National City, California, called Spotco Self Service,” Waits says as he leans against a pump. “I worked for a gentleman named Charles Spotco. I was always late for work. I used to stay out at night. I’d come dragging to work, used to get there about ten-thirty in the morning. He’d chew me out and scream at me for being late. He always said I’d never amount to nothing. I never thought I’d be standing in a gas station in Vienna Austria. If I’d of told him that one day, Spotco, I’ll be leaning on a gas pump at a gas station in Vienna Austria, he would have said you gotta be out of your mind.” The scene is from Tom Waits: A Day in Vienna, a half-hour Austrian TV film shot on April 19, 1979, and shown above in its entirety. Filmmakers Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher approached Waits when he arrived in Vienna on a short European tour, according to Barney Hoskyns in Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits. “He came in from Amsterdam saying he hadn’t slept all night, but he agreed on the spot to let us film him,” Rossacher told Hoskyns. “He didn’t want to do a proper interview but instead he wanted to tell stories.” Dolezal and Rossacher drove Waits to the old gas station and later to a Greek cafe, where he told a comic story about a saxophone player. At the Konzerthaus that night they filmed Waits and his band performing “Sweet Little Bullet From a Pretty Blue Gun,” “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis.” Backstage before the encore, Waits is shown pacing back and forth, singing “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Afterward, in a lounge, he sits down at a piano and plays a few bars of “I Can’t Wait to Get Off Work” before dancing with a bar girl and retiring for the night." www.openculture.com/2013/05/tom_waits_a_day_in_vienna.html
The same way a grifter can break your heart and you will give him everything, while another person will simply turn around and walk away. You have to, on some level, want to be deceived.
Tom is always unique, that's why I love and adore him If I could meet anyone in the world, past, present, or future it would be The mesmerizing Tom Waits .
After the last couple of years emotional roller coaster rides including my mothers death, birth of my twins, moving house, changing job and corona lockdown, i stumbled upon this again, and finally gave me back a little peace of mind ! Thank you Tom, for making the world a better place, thanks for uploading this :)

Regarding the 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' story Tom tells here; the same story is told by actor Frankie Faison (AKA Ervin Burrell in The Wire) in the 1979 Jim Jarmusch film Permanent Vacation. Given that Tom and Jim are friends, would it be fair to suggest that Jim stole the story from Tom?

muhkuh0816 That wasn't exactly Shake Rattle and Roll. It was mostly made up of Pasties and a G String verses/choruses interpolated with a bit of Shake, Rattle, and Roll in the choruses which he does not add in the studio version. It's kind of amazing how different it is from the studio version of Pasties since it has a full rock band setup in this live performance while it was just drums and Tom with no other instruments in the studio.

This program is killer! This never came up in the suggested videos until now, but I'm glad to see it now. One of my favorite eras in Waits' career.
The Best!
Fantastic! How 2 people have watched and then not liked this is beyond me!
Nickelback fans are something of an epidemic. It's kind of tragic really.

tom waits is the coolest man on earth
True That!
I don't know if i learned anything new about Tom Waits in this "documentary" other than he worked at a gas station once but.. i still dug it. Lol.

Yes it became a night club and now it´s an Italian restaurant.

This man is literally a James Dean and Ron Perlman hybrid.
Sensationell Oida
Ron Perlman is amazing, he should do more of this instead of shite like Pacific Rimming.
I’ve always wondered how he could have been so successful in two pretty distinct industries.

Great Tommasino...I
