- Join me as I discover Shamian Island, an old British and French concession on the South China Coast in the fabulous city of Guangzhou.
This old 800m strip of land was used by world traders as a hub for their trading warehouses, consulates, places of worship and mansions. We delve into the history of not just Shamian Island but Guangzhou, also known as Canton, as a trading port.
Along the way, we'll see churches and mansions and learn about a terrible massacre that took place here in 1925 at the hands of the British and French.

Wondering who are the occupants of these buildings now. I like your comments on the history of the place, rather than a few pictures without mentioning the historical context. A good example is the killing of the protestors 100 years ago. Not too many people knew about it.
I went there in the early 80's, it has changed dramatically since. Most of the buildings back them had been converted into tiny apartments and the first church in your video was being used as a metalworks factory
Great. Thanks for that. Apparently HK police department got very good rates and would often frequent The White Swan hotel in the 80s and 90s
