Hallo it's me, Hayden

The Cathedral is very well kept. I'm sorry to see the Shrine was taken away by Henry VIII. But still Thomas Becket is someone stands by his causes and protect his believers, despite the threats from Henry II. Thomas being the excellent chap. The shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral was destroyed by King Henry VIII, not Henry VII, as part of his broader campaign against the Catholic Church during the English Reformation. Here are the key reasons for this destruction: Conflict with Royal Authority: Thomas Becket was remembered as a martyr who stood up against royal authority, particularly during his conflict with King Henry II. This legacy was problematic for Henry VIII, who sought to consolidate his power and diminish the influence of the Catholic Church, which Becket had defended. Rejection of Catholicism: Henry VIII's break from the Roman Catholic Church was motivated by his desire to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope's refusal to grant this annulment led Henry to declare himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England in 1534. This shift necessitated the removal of Catholic symbols and figures that contradicted his authority, including Becket. Decree Against Becket: In 1538, Henry VIII officially declared Becket a traitor and ordered that his name be erased from all books. He proclaimed that Becket should no longer be considered a saint, which justified the destruction of his shrine and the removal of his images from churches. Destruction of the Shrine: The shrine itself, which had become a major pilgrimage site, was stripped of its gold and jewels. The treasures were removed, and the shrine was destroyed as part of Henry's efforts to eliminate Becket's cult and the associated pilgrimage practices that he viewed as threats to his authority. In summary, the destruction of Thomas Becket's shrine was a significant act in Henry VIII's campaign to establish his supremacy over the Church in England and to eliminate any symbols of resistance to his rule.
Thank you for showing us around Hong Kong. It’s fascinating to see how the region is rich in history, with influences from various cultures. There are superstitions and customs that reflect a blend of traditions from all over China, along with customs from Scotland, Ireland, and England. Additionally, mysterious elements from India, Portuguese culture, Punjabi traditions, and Zoroastrian beliefs contribute to this diverse cultural landscape. One notable historical site is the Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb, which is over 2,000 years old. This tomb, discovered in 1955, is significant not only for its age but also for its architectural style, which resembles Persian designs from the Middle East. Although the tomb is empty and no human remains were found, it provides valuable insights into the lives of early inhabitants during the Eastern Han period. Another important landmark is the Song Wong Toi stone. This stone serves as a reminder of Hong Kong's historical significance as the only and the last capital of China during the Southern Song dynasty, around 800 years ago. In the 20th century, scholars, educated village leaders, and colonial government officials deliberately placed it to commemorate this legacy, emphasizing the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Overall, these sites highlight the diverse influences that have shaped Hong Kong over the centuries, making it a fascinating place to explore.
gwulo is a great site for doing old photo research ❤❤❤
Thanks! Love Art Deco! Great building.
And I know you love history
Hi I am in sjs like you work there and I learn there
I never been here 😅
Look up the 1916 Liverpool Riot. Soldiers in camps around Sydney being trained for the war mutinied, invaded pubs in Western Sydney, commandeered trains to Central Station and rioted through the city streets. That was the reasoning for 6 o'clock closing. There are still bulletholes in the masonry at Central where police opened fire on the rioting soldiers.
Keep it up good sir! 😊
Gak jelas
Can find Thai food in Kowloon city 😊
Paper bark trees 😂😂😂 nice work mate
Thanks for the background info and homework done beforehand for us. This editing is professionally made. Totally underrated 🎉🎉🎉 very few videos made have an on site visit about the Battle of Hongkong.
Nice 😊
Sorry I hope I am not being an annoyance here but right behind the petrol station there is a St Teresa Church. It was built in 1932. If you go in you will find a tower that looks the tower at St Marks Square in Venice italy. It’s a beautiful and modern church inside.
@@Nama-Montana I nearly filmed St Teresa’s but will save it for another episode. Fascinating looking church ! 🙏
@ you must do a project for the two stone plagues on the walls by the front door. There was a brief time Mr. Benito the little man in Italy reconciled with the Pope in Rome in 1930s and he made contributions in the church building. And the fund was through his daughter and her husband while they were in Shanghai as consulates in china for Italy. You might also find along Benito other contributors being from Spain or Portugal. Other than that, it’s a major church for many living in Kowloon.
😅😅You will find the Maryknoll Convent School run by the Maryknoll Sisters based in New York. and La Salle College still run by the de la Salle brothers officially based in Rome but mostly Irish brothers. The brothers have been here since 1928 and have a st Joseph’s college and celebrating 150 years in HK. The same St Joseph’s Institute is in Singapore. They share the same school songs.
Maryknoll convent school back in 1950 invited Robert Kennedy, back then a congressman to Hong Kong because they shared an American Irish background.
Far away
How to get there Mr Luke ?
@@DollyTam-ip1vc just above Caine Road on the famous escalator. Very close to Jose Rizal’s old house.
Great info.
Stiff and Stephen nice name.
There seems to be a lot of hills in HK 😨
Great info, thanks. Makes such a difference to know about these details...
Note that KGV was opened on 14th September 1936, not 1937 🙏
Sorry, what's that dreadful soundtrack for.....can't listen to it. What a shame.
Good point. Did not realise it was so loud! Thanks for pointing it out
@coastyexplores Your voice and ambience sound is perfect. No need for any "enhancements". Really enjoying your tours and insights.
Great video as always, very interesting. Hope you got a Mr Softee on the way home?
Sydney has a bigger Chinese population.
Looking forward to more guided tours......

Welcome~
This BMH was haunted. After Japanese army left, some occupants were found waking up on the floor in the morning! After diserted for several years, it was leased to charity organisations and Jewish schools for daytime activities only. Island School ESF was built on the adjacent hillside. No more sighting or being brought out of bed onto floor anymore!
The visit by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh was indeed 1869, not 1889.
Hi Coasty Another great video very interesting. How long did your haircut take? 4 minutes you must be joking 😂
Very nice, but I think I'll give the Noonday Gun staircase a miss 😊
There is another way Dave. Get a taxi to drop you on a side road by the yacht club!
These are the colonial era stories we HK locals embrace. They make HK legendary.
That guy in the Wolves shirt is a handsome fella. Knows his trees too!
