  • Today on Modern Builds I'm converting the old barn on my new Joshua Tree property into my new DIY / WOODWORKING Workshop!! In this episode I pour a new concrete slab, fix structural problems, add polycarbonate clerestory / transom windows, insulate EVERYTHING, and lined the interior of the garage with plywood. This is an exciting undertaking and episode 2 will be out soon!

    MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

Truly informative! I needed a reference that highlighted basic wood frame construction methods & techniques where th-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU were best. I am pleased with the depth and clarity of Ryan’s Shed Plans. It was really convenient to capture!

When handing fiberglass insulation to remove itching skin take distilled vinegar and rub it on your skin. This Dilutes the fiberglass and removes the itch. Then you can wash yourself with soap and water.

Cool space, love the polycarbonate panels and so much bigger without the overhead loft space! I never thought to cut insulation in half and then add back to a full piece! Now I won't be wasting insulation. I got done 15" wide ceiling insulation that I'm removing and now will be installing it in garage walls that are 24" wide. I'm an arm chair wood worker without a place to wood work. Being a truck driver is also hard to bring a wood worker too. I'll be looking forward to part 2!

MIKE MIKE MIKE!!!! what day is it??? Dude i have been watching your vids for years, this is hands down the best thing that you have ever made. And that is true for many reasons, we will only go into a few of them. 1. you are going to make so much cool SHITUFF in it, that its baller! 2. you made on the cheep, you reused the whole structure, AND!!!! reclaimed the beautyness that is the Tree! and 3. you made it simple. You took and old shed and made it new, and any person with limited skills and a little effort could made something like this happen. AMAZING! love it keep killing it!

Unless the exterior is completely waterproof, which I doubt it is by the condition of it. That interior is going to trap moisture. You need to waterproof and put siding on the exterior or that insulation is going to get wet and moldy.

Looking good, that was a big improvement. It is a "shed" and you are in the desert but the batt insulation isn't meant to be directly against the roof sheathing. It can create mold and rot the roof sheathing. When you replace the roofing material, pull the sheathing off and add a layer of rigid foam insulation in each bay on top of the batt insulation

Awesome video man. Great work. I did a mixture of drywall and insulation for 3 years. I would recommend for future insulation work, use a snap blade knife. Much easier to cut through the batts and just treat those whole blades as a one utility blade rather than snapping them off. Also yeah, would of been nice to use something thicker like R19 for those walls but o well, at point you'd be condensing the batts so much it'd defeat their purpose.
