  • Oyakodon (親子丼) is a traditional Japanese comfort food with that great umami flavor made from chicken and eggs over rice. You will find Oyakodon all over Japan and in most Japanese restaurants around the world. Thanks to it’s simple recipe it has become a staple of Japanese home cooking.
    The name Oyakodon literally means chicken and eggs over a bowl of rice. Oyako translates to “parent and child” referring to the chicken and egg. Don, short for donburi, refers to the type of deep bowl that is used for okyakodon. Or oyako donburi. Donburi also refers to these types of dishes that use a deep bowl of rice with other ingredients on top. Other examples include katsudon and gyudon.
    Oyakodon combines tender chicken thighs with fresh eggs, and an umami rich, dashi based sauce poured over a bowl of fluffy white rice. It is easy to make and will surely be a hit in your home.

      When you want to know whether the Japanese cooked food chef is good with the raw ingredients, order just Oyakodon. Every chef cooks up an Oyakodon with different tastes. The worst chef will be one where the chicken meat still has the chicken blood smell linger on as well as overcooked chicken meat. Too watery is also a failure as the rice is suppose to be able to be picked up with the chopsticks but when the topping is too watery, the rice grains are separated like porridge.

    Hello! Can I substitute chicken or beef stock if I don't have dashi?

    • @CookingJapanese
      @CookingJapanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will definitely change the taste... but you could defiantly try. I think it would still be good. There are multiple ways to get or make dashi though. Here's our recipe for making it from scratch: th-cam.com/video/SbuliFS4Bsc/w-d-xo.html

    Dashi is what?if don't have can change something else?

    • @BadaBadaBingBong
      @BadaBadaBingBong 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dashi is like a bonito/fish base that is commonly used in soup. They look like these big powders. Dashi is important in making Oyakodon since that's where most of the flavor comes from when marinating with the ingredients. You can actually find them in places like Walmart. If you don't have it you can use a light-flavored broth such as chicken broth.

    hello, may I know what is dashi?

    • @CookingJapanese
      @CookingJapanese  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course... Dashi is a soup stock used in many Japanese recipes. It can be purchased in stores or made from scratch. Here is a recipe to make it at home. th-cam.com/video/SbuliFS4Bsc/w-d-xo.html

    Should reduce all ingredient quantity by half to achieve an amount to nicely top just 1 bowl of rice.

  • @eadruna
    @eadruna 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chicken should be added after onion becomes yellowish. Then eggs should have been poured all together then cover for a min or go into an oven.

      I prefer to sear my chicken first or even cook all the way before anything because the first time I tried this the chicken came out raw af doing the regular process despite cooking for a pretty long time.
      Lemme just say nothing in This world of food nothing is as repulsive as the taste and smell of raw chicken lol

      it is because, in japan, their chicken and eggs are vv safe

    • @Suisei_70i
      @Suisei_70i 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The chicken has been cut into small pieces, so it can cook rather quickly. I've made oyakodon before and never had a problem with chicken that size not cooking completely. Also, the egg is cooked as well. It just looks liquidy because there is dashi added in. But even if it's not fully cooked, as the previous comment said, eggs are safe to consume raw in Japan.
      Just like how some like their eggs softboiled and some like it hardboiled, you can definitely adjust the recipe to your liking.
