Wow Shakin' Stevens is the master of modern rock'n' roll. I've followed him from his days with The Sunsets. He brought brilliant light and colour into what I can only describe as a dark time in my life Thanks for sharing this great video, because this mans music saved my life.

Great footage, thanks for sharing, Shaky is really good live. This was just before he became massive with "This ole House" Would have loved to have seen him with the sunsets live, This rock and roll style was replaced some what in the 80's to pure catchy pop.
Like others,too,he was a great performer and had a good band who are obviously not just another rock/pop band,but accomplished musicians,like many modern musicians of that era were,including ones in heavy art rock bands,like Cream were. I think the reason these excellent performers did not get the rapid fame other lesser ones got is partly because of their publicity machinery.Who promotes you where and how can make a huge difference. The other part is because,although it was still rock-'n'-roll and wild as ever,it was pretty clean and decent and they never hit any noticeably wrong notes etc. The music was good but it lacked that risky element, that originality,he few bad notes,moves etc. It was pretty safe music to play a respectable try for people to let their hair down dancing to. Grandpa and grandpa might disapprove of all the loudness of such music and the driving beat,but it didn't really offend anybody else. Whereas you couldn't really put on Cream doing "Politician" or Rolling Stones rocking out "Honky Tonk Women" and not get a few dirty looks of disapproval from some in a mixed audience. It was a bit too risky,so, if throwing a party,you needed to either get rid of certain types of guests eg the so called "family" types back then. Or else make sure you only played respectable, innocent, sweet,cutie rock music that was safe for married women and teenage girls etc to dance to, no risky lyrics or too sexually provocative dance moves,like Mick Jagger did. Shaking Stevens was sexy, too, but in a different way the more straight "family" types didn't find too provocative, hot,sexual. But that is the very thing that made the Stones big sellers. They were good musicians,true, but, if they didn't have Mick Jagger as their front, lead singer, dressing up in a sailor suit or other stage antics he got up to, with his gyrating hot sexy dance moves that left nobody guessing what he meant, I doubt that they would have made it like they did. In performing arts, it's not enough to just be good at music or even also acting,which is understood you will be and automatically assumed you are, if you dare get on a stage expecting people to make time to bother seeing you strut your stuff. You need to be original, stand out from the rest of the boring clones all imitating each other to be "stars". You need to take few creative risks and hope people can relate to to our shit you strut and don't pelt rotten vegetables at you. Like the Italian audiences of yester year used to pelt at bad opera singers who dared get on a stage to perform badly at the prestigious,famous La Scala opera house, in Milan. The problem with Shaking Stevens' good performances was that it was an excellent version of the same sort of music from the rock'n'roll hey day era. Which, by the time he came on, was becoming "yesterday's pop". Though many back then loved such music and many in this era,even, still do love it. Because it takes them back to an era in our own western folks culture,when life was much simpler, easier, more innocent. When doing naughty things as a teen might be staying out with your date late when your father ordered you to be home by 10pm or else! Nowadays,the night out typically starts at 10pm, after much alcohol, door, street drugs etc have been used, sex had (to decide if she/he really is worth bothering to buy a drink for or take to some sleazy club to show off your latest catch and some females will rock up with half a dozen male's,boasting about how they had sex with all of them... I once gave my very innocent young husband permission to go on a "Desperate And Dateless" ball in Melbourne and have a good time,like a free single man (mainly because I wanted to spend time chatting about interesting topics with an intelligent more mature aged male on the phone and I knew my young husband would feel jealous and insecure if he caught me,as his older woman wife in an intense,engrossed conversation with what he labelled "Old Farts" . He was very excited about his big night on the town, free as a bird, even bought new clothes,a very 'visible' bright yellow suit,to "lure girls" and asked my opinion of his "image" but, not wishing to wreck his evening out,I made no comments. "I even bought yellow daffodil flowers you told me are symbols of manhood to give my mystery girl date who is going to meet me there,at the ball" he informed me,looking for my approval. "Oh,I'm sure she'll love them. They match your suit, though your hair's a darker shade of gold..." I replied,wishing he'd hurry up and leave because my mature age gent would be ringing any moment for a chat and I didn't want young husband listening in, getting jealous, throwing his usual temper tantrums. He finally left but returned about an hour later and caught me on the phone and the usual domestic dramas started up. So I quickly and politely ended the call, told him it was "just some market research survey thing" and asked about how his hot Desperate and Dateless ball girl was etc, noticing he still had his now ruined Buch of expensive golden daffodils he had bought her still in hand but had forgotten to remove his wedding ring,which might have helped him....He began to relatshow she arrived with big fat lily white legs in men's Boots,football Sox, a tattoo on one thigh and black shiny "evening???" Stubby style boxing ring shorts and about 6 other Melbourne style street thug male's in tow,all keen to take him on, so he ran to O the safety of of home and we Ife as fast as as he could. I was t et Ying desperately hard to not be roll over laughing at such a hilarious scenario because I could see he was very upset as a male and visibly shaken by the whole "Desperate and Dateless" experience. He was getting angry. "What sort of wife are you? If you really cared,you'd be there,instead of making me face all this alone..." he complained. "You're a big boy now. And what makes you think I care,anyway? And, besides, you are the one who is desperate and Dateless,not me, matey! So I gave you the gift of masculine freedom, the greatest gift any loving wife can give her man, but all you do is whinge..." I replied as I continued stirring the pot on the stove. "Bitch! You're a witch, always cooking some evil brew in that kitchen .. I hate you! " I suggested he try a new dating approach to "get girls", like bring them some of the nice cupcakes I was baking anduse some clever male line like "A nice little cupcake, just for my little buttercup girl, my wife just baked it...." "Oh, and in case you're wondering, it is safe to eat. No poisonous ingredients...."
