    Something really went wrong here. Last Saturday we drove 850 km to Austria with a Volvo C40 at comparable temperature and snow conditions. I did not empty the battery below 10% but with me the arrival percentage increased and everything was fine. I went 120-130 km instead of 110 km to let the percentage drop. I had a consumption of 23 kWh-100km.

  • @richardgledhill
    @richardgledhill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I'm sure it's due to you setting the destination as a rapid charger. It will heat the battery for 15-20 minutes before arrival in order to maximise the charging speed, but in doing so typically uses 8% of the battery - but far more in those cold conditions. I bet if you repeated the test but set the destination to a building next to the charger (not the rapid charger itself) you would have made it with around 12% left.

    • @steven_vogt
      @steven_vogt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a very interesting and credible sounding hypothesis. Is there any way of verifying it? @kris rifa - any chance you could repeat the test (or similar) doing as Richard suggests to see if this makes a difference?

    • @richardgledhill
      @richardgledhill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@steven_vogt Certainly I've seen that Bjorn Nyland has seen the charge level drop dramatically in this situation and the estimated battery charge level doesn't take it into account. I've seen this on my Polestar which uses the same drivetrain.

    Thanks for going out for the test (as you always do) despite condition being far from optimal. Also looking forward to see it in kinder conditions. Slush on the road is really upping the consumption in any car. But it is the reality for a lot of people many days a year and a lot more obvious when your range is as limited in an EV in winter (which it will be if you are to get slush...=) Just as you, I did not see that massive power limit coming... Looking forward to all your upcoming videos on the C40.

    Addition to my earlier story of the outward journey. Saturday, January 15, 850 km back to the Netherlands from Austria. This time minus 5 degrees further foggy but no snow. Charging should remain at 150 kW for a little longer. For navigation, one should be able to indicate in the route planner that charging stations are long on the highway and do not have to leave it. Once, the navigation indicated a charging station in a village while it was actually next to the highway. This was an exciting moment because the way back meant 1% left and the power limited. The consumption was comparable to the outward journey. Otherwise a great experience and great car to drive.

  • @marcusarmstead1479
    @marcusarmstead1479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Kris, thanks so much for your videos. I watched all of them before purchasing my Volvo XC40 here in the US. What you just showed is very common in my vehicle, and not just on cold days. Lets say I plan a trip and my car says I will have 20% battery left on arrival. I never get there with 20%. It can be as low as 5% when I arrive. My car estimates can not be trusted. I can watch as I am driving my expected power on arrival drop 1% at a time over and over again. If range is important to anyone, I would think twice about a Volvo EV. Everything other than the range is completely top notch in my XC40. I completely understand that ranges are most times based on perfect driving and weather conditions. However, when I am sitting in my car and planning a trip I think I want to see real world conditions. In the beginning I came real close to running out of battery power on several occasions. Not being a Tesla, there are not many charging options along our US highways.

    • @DougThompson
      @DougThompson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marcus, I have a 2021 XC40 Recharge and my estimates have been really close.......actually I have wound up with doing better than the predicted mileage. I have 20 inch wheels so I wonder if that is something to consider, but its strange your estimates are so far off. Cold weather really does effect the range though. In the summer I was getting 25-26 kWh/100mi. Now in the winter I'm getting 38-39 kWh/100mi. So cold really hurts the battery.

    • @marcusarmstead1479
      @marcusarmstead1479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DougThompson Hi Doug, just a quick question. Knowing your power consumption is changing from 25-38 do you feel you estimates are changing with that in mind or do the estimates become incorrect? Also I have never seen power consumption at 25 kWh/100mi only higher, sometimes up to 44.

    • @DougThompson
      @DougThompson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcusarmstead1479 It seems to me to mostly be correct. I've calculated what my state of charge should be when I arrive at my destination and it was pretty close. The power consumption really varies a lot.......it really gets affected by cold weather, and also it might have warmed up to the 40's but was much colder at night, it still takes a while to get a lower consumption rate. In this case, the longer you drive the better the consumption rate as the battery gets warmer. I'm not sure where you live, but as the weather gets warmer you will see better rates.

      Looking forward to try it out i the summer. Hoping to get close to 400 km on a charge…
      The “estimated charge on arrival” is very precise. It is always within +/- 2-3% which in my opinion is good - since the car cant take head wind and snowy/wet roads in consideration.

    Many thanks Kris Refa for this tests. I am actually thinking about ordering this car at the end of the month. Then it will take about 3 or 4 months when I own the car. For mine work I have to drive about 260km a day that means I have to recharge it underway somewhere under these weather conditions. I live in the Netherlands so this weather conditions will not appear a lot overhere. Now I have a question. Earlier I had seen the test with the XC40 with temperatures of at the lowest of -20°C. But then you hadn't this many lose of power at 0% battery. Mine opinion is that the weather condition the slippery road and uphill driving made it all come together to having this problems. What do you think about that? By the way here in the Netherlands there is an ev-database where we can find the practical statistics of any ev car. And their I could find the range of 225km at worse weather conditions already. And the test that you made concludes the the statistics on the ev-database are kind of accurate. Again many thanks for the test. Hope the next test under better conditions will be much better then the last test of the C40.

    I regularly drive from our home in Massachusetts to our mountain house in New Hampshire, which is 137 miles away. Under dry, or even colder snowing, winter conditions I'll have around 25% SoC available upon arrival (departure w/100% SoC). That's with winter tires and a roof box on.
    When I drove up under the same conditions you experienced, my range was dropping off SUPER fast, and Google Maps was dropping the estimated arrival SoC more than I've ever seen! I had 12% SoC once I got there.

    Great video. I’m confused about EV’s, are they “second cars”? Not supposed to be driven all year? I’m from the Northeast of America and in places like Chicago, Dearborn, Cleveland and Buffalo our streets look like that or worse for the entire Winter, about 3 months. In many cities the pavement stays covered in snow, ice and slush until the Spring Thaw melts it down. EV’s at a MINIMUM need to get through your driving conditions easily because it gets much worse than that in the Northeast.

    Simple consideration. In Southern EU (dont know if it is the same in the other parts) if the are mild or bad conditions you have to decrease your speed by 20 kmh, not depending the road you are riding over. So, Ive seen you drove 110 kmh, it is simply not correspond to reality over here. You should instead do 90. And we know how different would have been such different in speed at those conditions which respect the reality.

    Very good informative video indeed and thanks Kris!!! I wouldn´t want to experience "the turtle effect" on the road... This shows that (in winter conditions) even in motorway speeds the consumption of electric vechicles is still too high!!! I saved the data sheet from your video and compared more the consumptions and to my opinion none of those cars you have tested is good enough to my thinking. Even the Audi E-tron GT went only about 80% of the battery and in august, warm weather! Everything below 60% is total rubbish. I am disappointed in Volvo and Polestar range/technology yet. I guess for the Volvo C40 it could be something software related? Tesla consumptions are definitely the best. How can they do that? I am not able to tell and don´t know what to do, but for the sake of power in motor they should tweak and learn to adjust range more than the power and acceleration...! I don´t assume it is possible yet but +400hp with that kind of range is useless if you drive steadily and same speed in motorway...

  • @MrT_PityTheFuelHeads
    @MrT_PityTheFuelHeads 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At the current software 1.8, and also with the previous 1.7, Volvo XC40 has experienced almost similar phenomena. In the XC40´s case, and when driving close to 0%, the % gauge in the instrument cluster shows very different figures compared to Google Maps´ estimation of the arrival SoC. I´ve experienced this first hand, as 200m before home/charger, the % gauge showed 4% left and 35km remaining range whereas the Google Maps estimated 10% at the arrival (i.e. 200m prior arrival). First of all, you cannot drive 35km with only 4% left, so that´s wrong. Secondly, the turtle mode was not activated at that very moment. There is something fishy going on with these percentages. The software updates have done something to the % gauge´s estimations. More importantly, you don´t have the similar trust on these figures like in last summer. Volvo, fix this! And, thanks Kris for showing these abnormalities in your video!
