Cybertopia - Dreams of Silicon Valley - Docu - 2015

  • What is the vision of cyber-utopists in Silicon Valley? They are responsible for a revolution that shapes our lives on all levels. This is a portrait of Cybertopia. We read the gospel according to Steve Jobs, download the latest apps and are in awe of Google.
This revolution is shaped by new programmers, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. They have the knowledge, networks and money. Perhaps the idea that Silicon Valley wants to be separated from the United States, is a prelude to what awaits us.

Silicon Valley, is the problem with this country, high drug use, high rent, high taxes, company welfare, state tax deductions cost they expect other people to pay , and they complain about government.

not to mention global sweatshops and polluted oceans and the like. Imagine how fast this would all fold-up if there were no planned obsolescence in this tech jazz. BTW that is really all this bs is. Finding ways to never finish anything/ Keep it all in update stage and milk the customer for decades.

2:12 "We're from the future; we're from California!" I live and worked in Silicon Valley for over ten years, and unfortunately, that 'smarter-than-you...better-than-you', smug, self-centered elitist mindset is not uncommon there. 7:58 "...as opposed to a free market, where the winners win....because they're the best..." That it is an _extremely_ naive view. Quite often, those who 'win' in business (realize great profit returns) are those who are willing to utilize unethical means that wouldn't be considered by, or are repugnant to, truly decent people who thereby trumped (pun intended) in their efforts to compete.

Very interesting. However, I have been part of this valley for 35 years. I find many many more left leaning folks than more freedom leaning folks. Actual libertarians are rather marginalized. I also have seen the valley go from the dreams of "Computer Power to the People" and other dreams to "make a mint as quickly and effectively as possible". Yes there are still wonderful dreamers here but there is also a LOT of inertia. You see people go from "Think Differently" to sue the asses off of anyone that may do something similar and lock out innovators and hackers that founded these empires.

These are very stupid people. These are hardly innovators or dreamers. These are people one tiny step removed from a drive-in movie theater swap meet. Most of them operate sweatshops internationally. Their planned obsolescence garbage piles liter much of the third world and oceans. It is Capitalism at warp speed.

Thiel, "Sovereignty". Unbelievable what you can get away with saying by having enough zeros in your bank balance.
Anyone feeling the liberty and sovereignty of technology?
All I feel is that I used to be served but now I have to do everything myself and back luck to me when the program/app/"system" hasn't been coded to accept another answer.
I have to disagree with the premise of computers and automation making life simpler or better or more advanced, mine has become orders of magnitude more complex with much wasted time. I can't reason with silicon chips. Bring back humans!!!!

incongra maybe, but only maybe, the big data driven collective awareness about expanding plutocracy will let SV come up with an innovative solution against its detrimental effects yet again. for sure, EU like bureaucracy won't find such solutions and just applies old rules: tax more, fall back to communism.

    • @incongra
      @incongra 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I actually agree with what you say but I'm not sure the untrammelled maverick capitalism we see depicted here is quite the answer we're all looking for either. Once you start categorising humans by whether or not they "add value" where does it all end? And it's no surprise these people hate "government" ( or as we normally prefer to call it, democracy).... Interesting that we both frame our arguments using the 20th century paradigms of "capitalist versus communism" though, isn't it?

Unfortunate they chose to concentrate on a few high-profile futurist visions (those of Tim Draper + Peter Thiel) which don't really line up with the majority in the valley. There are MANY who think technology can improve governments - not everyone in tech thinks gov't is a lost cause.

George Donnelly This. Not technoplutocracy. The thing i dont like about some of these people is that they have little compassion, respect or empathy with other lifestyles and sometimes lifeforms. That's the kind of elite and imperialistic capitalism we should avoid. Can technology help doing that? Yes.

Blah blah! This is Nerd Nation meets the Immortals. Tech guys bang on about value chains, but how much real value do tech firms add? Google tech sector contribution to GDP via wages and tax revenue, (minus tax breaks/evasion). It is a tiny percentage.
Now to the real agenda. Notice how narrow the tech workforce is? Yet tech is everywhere. The architects write the 'script' and OUR programs are literally at the touch of a button. Decode Draper's superhero murals and his infant mastery fantasies and you find the new ruling class. They're all wannabe Clark Kents: part systems thinker, part demi-god, total Eugenicists wet dream! The global technocracy they want to bring in is simply Feudalism by another name.

Eliminating competition and hiding the quality of your products and services is a core principle of Capitalism. The counter is Free Markets. Sadly we do not have free markets in too many areas which are dying for some air.

These people haven't at all solved any real problems other than the ones of their imagination. Their tools are actually very damaging to humanity and to life. They worship materialism. In my mind they are not as advanced in their thinking as they think they are. They continue to work with the left brain only. Left brain on steroids. "The best minds" these guys have a superior complex and some mental stagnation. There is not one problem in the world that they have worked to solve. They didn't even divide California in a manner that it should have been divided for practicality and function to all of the states or the the benefit for the future.
