Shoshana Zuboff on surveillance capitalism | VPRO Documentary

  • Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff wrote a monumental book about the new economic order that is alarming. "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism," reveals how the biggest tech companies deal with our data. How do we regain control of our data? What is surveillance capitalism?
In this documentary, Zuboff takes the lid off Google and Facebook and reveals a merciless form of capitalism in which no natural resources, but the citizen itself, serves as a raw material. How can citizens regain control of their data?
It is 2000, and the dot.com crisis has caused deep wounds. How will startup Google survive the bursting of the internet bubble? Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin don't know anymore how to turn the tide. By chance, Google discovers that the "residual data" that people leave behind in their searches on the internet is very precious and tradable.
This residual data can be used to predict the behavior of the internet user. Internet advertisements can, therefore, be used in a very targeted and effective way. A completely new business model is born: "surveillance capitalism."

      a. What exactly matters throughout all of future eternity and to whom does it exactly and eternally matter to? Currently: Pertinent facts matter, but one day, there is not going to be a conscious entity left for them to matter to, at least not from this Earth.
      b. Currently: Nature is our greatest ally in so far as Nature gives us life and a place to live it, AND Nature is also our greatest enemy that is going to take it all away. (OSICA)
      c. Currently:
      1. We are ALL going to die one day from something.
      2. We are ALL going to forget everything we ever knew and experienced.
      3. We are ALL going to be forgotten one day in future eternity as if we never ever existed at all in the first place.

Funnily enough, one of the only things I recall my grandad telling me - and he was the commercial director of a big firm - was never to buy from the brands that advertise the most. He told me that the money they put into advertising was money that wasn't put into research and production, therefore putting less emphasis into the product itself.
This philosophy has served me well during my life.

    • @sebastianeberth8373
      @sebastianeberth8373 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

honestly though that doesnt make too much sense nowadays. Sure there might be firms that spend a lot on advertising (in whatever way) because they have to. But those firms spending a lot may also simply be those who sell well enough to be able to afford it. And in capitalism as we have it today, it doesnt matter what product you as a user buy, you will have tons of options; sometimes firms simply cannot afford not NOT advertise their stuff because it will simply stay unseen/unheard of. And thus if you sell more because you advertise well you can in turn invest more in research than those who didnt advertise in the first place.
I'm really not a marketing enthusiast (although kind of working in it), but there's a saying I think makes more sense: nothing destroys bad products faster and more effectively than marketing well made. because people will (usually) realize if a product sucks or not.

    • @svrnclv
      @svrnclv ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@sebastianeberth8373 to be fair, he said spend the most, not a lot. all businesses have to market themselves, but his granddad gave him the advice of not doing business with the company that does the MOST advertising. I personally think it still holds up if you separate advertisers by industry.

As bad as this doc is, it’s really a whitewash and the tech is far more intrusive, more sinister and ubiquitous (commercial application is only secondary and just a cover), it doesn’t require personal or home devices, and has been used for decades already. Yuval Harari is addressing the tech to a degree but puts another spin on it and pretending it’s not already in place and long been operating.

@@effexon Good point re: liberty vs convenience. However, it more relates to a personal choice, or perhaps collective archetypes. A typical person is more than willing to trade lots of freedom for some convenience, especially the convenience of being a member of the herd. That's what Nietzsche called "herd mentality". You see that in your everyday life. How many of your friends just do what everyone else does, like what everyone else does, do nothing to actually exercise the freedom they already have? But my original point was about the way a given society is established - its legal framework, constitutional framework. If you carefully analyze any constitution, you'll realize that most of the freedoms aren't absolute, they are limited by some other freedoms or other interests of greater importance.

Here's another rabbit hole: Fitbit and other smart watches can create a heartprint, a signature of your heart activity that is unique to you like a fingerprint. This same heartprint can be read by an infrared laser at significant distances so that your identity can be revealed even while you're wearing moderately thick clothing, masks, etc.

In fact they often get wrong the heartrate of people with darker soon because the green lights are not reading the skin as accurately as light skin. Only the Apple watch which uses infrared I think gets the most accurate reads. Also does this mean it loses accuracy if you take drugs that affect your heartrate such as large does of caffeine or anti anxiety medication?

I'm pretty sure even if you leave your phone at home, they track you via others smartphones you are in proximity to. If their system sees your phone location at your home, not being used for a long period of time, but another device picks up your voice via the mic, or sees you via camera, they can still pinpoint your location, and log data on you.
For example. I left my phone in my car while visiting my parents house, my dad and I were talking about buying a specific brand of pressure washer. That night, I get bombarded with ads for that brand of pressure washer. Keep in mind neither of us had searched for this before or after, or even anything in that category of tools. At what point does it go from being paranoia to a proven fact? I guess if I want to use technology, I'll just have to live with being subjected to this, as creepy as it feels. The first step of combating this trend is awareness.

A little story: My wife and I were out in the back yard, and I wanted to listen to some music, so I went inside and got and old school radio with a cord end on it, came back outside and was going to plug it in on the deck at the back of my back yard. there was a small puddle of water on the deck and my wife made a joke, as she often does about not electrocuting myself, because I am an electrician. Not two seconds later her phone made a weird ring tone that neither of us had ever heard before. she looked on her phone and the message was a link to a page from Wikipedia on what to do if some one gets electrocuted. Neither me or my wife have any sort of voice recognition software or any kind of google assistant or anything like that on our phones, yet the phone was listening and thought there was an emergency and revealed itself by sending that link and the strange ring tone, I have made some inquires to some friends who are more in the know about these things, none of them were surprised by the story, but none of them could explain what happened and to this day I just except it as a ghost in the machine

Actions like posting comments and clicking on like buttons, which you knowingly carry out in public and contain very minimal metadata are totally fine to be gathered and analyzed. You and I can also scrape it and analyze it, the playing field is (in theory) equal. That's not where the problem is.

It's so bad and intrusive, if you are being monitored and analysed by their algorithms and bots, and are unaware they are bots, the bots can be misidentified as actual human stalkers or hackers manipulating your life.
Bots can social engineer you better than real life scammers.
They have already caused psychological trauma, and destroyed lives just like any other stalker.
You can get a restraining order on a door to door salesman. But not a bot.
Real life stalkers end up behind bars. Bots and their handlers get a pass, even if their actions cause consequences such as Extreme paranoia, violence, and suicide.
Bots have and will continue to destroy lives. In some Extreme cases kill people. More so as AI becomes more widely used and becomes more powerful.
The current "Honor system" that governs the use of bots and AI needs at first a literal revolution, and then concrete laws and accountability and consequences for those laws.
As the world currently is. AI, bots, and the elitest financial institutions that control them, can almost manipulate people to do whatever they want, by overlaying the real-world with the information and "Skin" of their choosing. Even manipulating the people around us to aid the bot's goals. Whatever those goals may be.
Makes you wonder if these "terrorists" that commit Extreme acts of violence have been manipulated by bots and the organization's who control them, in order to create a chaotic situation they in turn can profit from.
Scary. But completely possible, because for the most part everything is completely unregulated so anything is entirely possible.
The only solution is to get back control of our front door. Our phones and digital devices are the new front door of the 21st century.
You wouldn't let a vampire through your front door. Why are we so eager to let these bots unregulated?
If Facebook and Google bots have killed people because of "manipulation testing" will they ever be held accountable?
It must have happened. Law of averages says that mistakes of this magnitude must happen. Nevermind deliberate malicious actions swept under the rug.

@@jacominahofmeester7815 You must make sure you don't fall into conspiracy theories; it's impossible for any device to read anyone's thoughts in any way. There are likely cameras and/or mics in or around your home and devices that you don't know about--even in the older non-smart devices. Also, other people's devices that come into your house or are used near you can still create a data profile on you without you ever even using the Internet or phone. Perhaps there's a picture of you on someone's social media or some news website. Remember that Professor Zuboff said this has been going on for longer than we know so old devices my not be a way out (although I'd agree in guessing that they might be "safer").
Regardless of all this, if you use social media in any way at all, there is a profile on you that goes beyond just the websites you use--again, even if you don't use smart devices or a newer PC.

There is no scientifically possible way for any technology to read your mind or invade your thoughts in the way you are describing. That's a pseudo-scientific conspiracy theory. At most, the phenomenon you are describing is a coincidence. People tend to vocalize their thoughts. Some things you may have told others and they're already in your data profile. Remember that those ads and recommended videos will appear regardless of your thoughts because the profile of you already exists. And remember that they can predict your behavior like how the documentary shows. Maybe you're feeling that they're reading your mind when in reality the algorithm is just extremely accurate at showing you what you want when you want it based on the information it has on you. Think about it this way: there is a reason why Professor Zuboff did not say _anything_ about technology reading your mind or anything related to such a capability. It is because it's not worth being cautious of. (Besides that, she said that it can _predict_ your behavior--not invade people's thoughts. These are not the same thing.) Science is simply not there and to think that there is some nefarious top-secret technology at work of which we must be afraid is exactly how conspiracy theories develop. that is why i run only the Linux operating system and Open Source Software on my computers. any closed source software created by companies is full of spyware. Linux is produced by the Community and is owned by no one. If that ever changes then i'm going off the grid and back to books.

Fantastic documentary with serious pertinent information and contextual awareness on the depths of digital network spider web of data collection, the greatness and the ugly that can come from it, everybody should listen to.
My only note is the unfortunate introduction this documentary starts with by stating the comparison that some make with C Marx. I’m saying this because this 2 words will immediately creative a negative connotation in the limited and largely uneducated minds of the common American whom will be quick to negatively judge and stamp the entire speech as socialist and or communist (indeed often even used interchangeably), and if they even proceed to listen to the documentary and don’t stop right there and then , they already made up their minds. Case in point, I read a pejorative comment in those lines on another comments thread on one of her more recents speeches, stating this exact comparison. It simply shuts minds of many Americans down that would otherwise and Ironically be rather interested and rather concerned about the serious break of their privacy and indeed free will.

Have you ever had what you believed to be a "Private Conversation" with your Smart Phone in your pocket, only to be later presented with Advertising Information relevant to your Private Conversation? Yet you know that you had never entered any Search Information in Google, and yet many never realize the actual power of that microphone to listen in without you knowing it!

Shame how many people let that go right over their heads.

I can listen to this woman talk all day. In fact keeping in line with what she's saying there's a ton of videos in my sidebar right now with videos of more content for her.
