How to replace a chainsaw sprocket,Stihl MS 290,310,390,391

  • Not all chainsaw owners know that the sprocket is just as important as the chain on a chainsaw. If they're both not in tip top shape, there will be problems. If you replace the components that are designed to wear, as they need it, you will have a much better cutting saw for a much longer period.

    Easy peasy! The hardest part was wearing out the sprocket

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the wear is from the operatorwho keeps over tightening the chain.

    I like quick n' easy fixes. Not those involving springs and detents that pop out and you never find em. The lil notch and rod were the ringers here.

      I heard a chainsaw guy say that the sprocket should be replaced at every third or fourth chain replacement. I never knew!!

      It is serious discovered he has an aortic aneurysm. Thank God he had an issue that helped us discovery it! Will be having open heart surgery for a repair in the next week or so. The size is less that what usually requires surgery right NOW. But is got to be fixed. Just go back yesterday from another test, at least he doesn't so any blockage anywhere and his valves look great too. Hope you and Mrs. are doing well.

    There was a lot of meat left on that sprocket, it almost looked better than mine? I'm two bars and four chains into my (purchased in 04) MS 290. Love that saw, I need to look at the sprocket. I'm just about to cut a road around the farm! Need it in top shape! Thanks bro! Hope you've been well!!

      they are cheap enough that its not painful to replace them even a little before they actually need to be.

      BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose but to us paid professionals, that was a number 3 circlip installation tool. (Snap-On would charge $150.09 for it.....)

    I need to buy a good all round chain saw. What do you suggest for light weight but cut down a 16" or smaller diameter tree.

    • @bctruck
      @bctruck  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ArkansasPrepper the MS250 is a great all around saw. It has an 18 inch bar and can fell and buck.

    Useful video. I always find when trying to remove the C clip on the sprocket it always pins off and I lose it and a struggle to get off. How do you do this without it pinning somewhere and how often do you tend to change the sprocket?

    • @fuckcensorship69
      @fuckcensorship69 ปีที่แล้ว

      its recommended to get a new sprocket every other time you change chains

    • @mattseymour8637
      @mattseymour8637 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fuckcensorship69 That sounds about right but I usually go by how deep the wear is on the sprocket and you can use a measuring gauge.

      @@fuckcensorship69 Haha I think you can tell by looking at it by the wear as that's what I do also you know by how well it's cutting I find and you just know when it needs changing. But the guide helps.

    Got it Thank you very much, Its a small thing but very important ,I was told by a Stihl Dealer/repair man.A wee question or 2 though ? If you have a link to a Video showing how that Oiler works. Or does it matter the position either is at so long long as the slot in the sprocket housing goes down over that little shiny bar ?
    Looking forward to your reply
    Thanks
    John

      It doesn’t matter where the oiler bar is as long as it’s in the slot if the clutch.

    Brad, do you have any idea how lucky you are? Don't ask me how many E clips have gone flying into the great beyond from trying that same install move!

    • @bctruck

      I bought a backup C clip and i keep it in the toolbox. i fully expected this one to fly north.

      25 miles due east. I worry about it but I have to bloom where I’m planted. If I was younger, I would cash out here and move to the ozark plateau.
