      Everybody else portrays her like queen Mary Tudor of England, but this lady pprtrays her like Queen Victoria and I love it. She is crazy enough to be willing to force her daughter into homicide, but for her it's just the most effective and surefire way to get what she wants. Amazing.

      Frequencies that only God can grant. If you hear the frequencies like that everyone must put their mike down. It is very risible when you should boast your voice to anyone who has many people closest to the God's gift and was not interested in your voice as even don't know you at all. A very sly way to show off and promote yourself as if you're not, but you cant deceive anyone like the favourite queen of the night. The good artists can SEE THROUGH your intentions for doing your artwork. Just do it for joy and hapiness, kylatid, not for show-off if you cannot reach that artistic level with maturity and true modesty. The best way to overcome your inferiority complex is to go back to the basic need to become an artist: pure joy and passion.

      People: so what’s your voice range? Cristina Deutekom: yes.

    • @katerinaaqu
      @katerinaaqu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Well I am not aware of her range but a range and voice type are different things. This song has around two octaves of range. This is kind of a wide range for an aria (usually I see arias of one or one and a half octaves) However the fact that one has high notes doesn't necessarily mean they have large range too.
      Singers usually focus upon two and a half to three octaves of range. She for example as a coloratura could have a teccitura from F to F but doesn't mean that she has necessarily too low notes to have a huge range. Of course singers like her probably learn their techniques so well that they can sing low and high notes.
      I for instance am an advanced level student but without her technique and even if I cannot reach her high notes my maximum range with great practice and warm up is around G3 to C6 but I usually sing at about half as much roughly around E4 to A5. So yeah I am not aware if her range is huge but she surely has amazing technique.
      Iguess what I am trying to say is that high notes don't always indicate huge range but they indicate that their range extends high instead of low. Contraltos who sing low notes might have huge ranges too as well as lyric sopranos that don't always sing at the sixth octave (they rarely do) but that doesn't indicate low range. Just lower frequencies

      @@katerinaaqu Finally someone gets it. I'm sick of everyone assuming high voices=wide ranges. Like I can sing C5-C6 all day everyday and they will think I have a wider range than someone else singing C4-G5 since I go higher than them. People are so ignorant and so many act like know-it-alls when it comes to singing just cuz they have, well, a pair of ears. They have no idea but still are talking anyways since no one tells them to shut up or they don't give a shit if they do.

      I was super impressed by her technicality! Those triplets at 2:06 are not an easy part of the aria (especially after hitting the high f's!) additionally, I think that inflection and specificity of notes was intentional. The entire time she's scolding her daughter and basically telling her she will be disowned if she doesn't kill Sarastro. Shes extremely cold in her demeanor throughout, and that perfection only adds to the quality of performing it that way. Just my opinion! :)

    There’s a reason as to why this is considered Mozart’s most terrifying aria, and this performance is absolutely perfect. The stone cold, regal feeling of the acting perfectly portraying a Queen figure, the fluid, smooth flow from one note to another, it occasionally sounds so mesmerizing and yet so perfectly melodic it almost feels impossible for a human to have performed it. Perfection, truly.

I don't think she looks bored or emotionless like other people say in the comments. what I appreciate here is a much more precise knowledge not only about how to sing perfectly, but also how to act for the camera. This is not for the stage, it seems to be a film version and she knows it, so everything is in her eyes, cold and heartless, that's what the Queen of the Night is supposed to be. Just maybe a lot of people is used to more hysterical renditions like Damrau's or Dessay's.

    While Diana Damrau acts this role well, and Edda Moser's take on this aria was robust enough to be featured on the space record on Voyager, I've got to say that Cristina Deutekom's performance is the best I've heard. The Queen of the Night's villainy sounds much more stronger and convincing with such a harsh, quasi-Wagnerian vocal tone.

    • @SuusUSA
      @SuusUSA 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It's her native Dutch that makes this possible. Therefore iI've always thought it strange that Diana Damrau's dictation isn't so clear, her being German.

    • @flav2689
      @flav2689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@SuusUSA Actually, Damraus pronunciation is the perfect one. But the ”problem” lies there as well. Since she is German, she cannot help but pronounce the words naturally and ”right” - which actually differs quite a bit from the ideal clear dictation in classical singing. Even as a non-German who has only studied the language I can hear the difference. Even though Deutekoms pronounciation is very good and I imagine everyone understands it - which is crucial in singing and especially opera - for German-speaking listeners it sounds a bit off. A native speaker cannot do that - and the German audience would be very unhappy if she did. German is also phonetically a very different kind of language than others.

    • @FairyLotusUnicorn
      @FairyLotusUnicorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@flav2689 thats not even the problem. The problem is mentality and technique. Damrau is simply not as good. Period. A brit has no problems speaking american english dialect whereas americans have more trouble. British sounds are tougher on the palate.
      Easy to hard is well...harder than going from hard to easy.
      Same conceptually as shakespeare. Actors who actually understand what theyre saying can say the exact same words and you can understand it vs the guy flouncing the same thing and you cant even remember a single thing he said.
      Think of julie andrews english that is clear vs the guttural yorkshire or even scottish ones like katie mcgraths.
      Give someone difficult sentences (comprehensive level)to memorize. The one who clearly dictates and you understand it is because they understood what they were saying.
      The one who just says it and you got lost...means they have no idea what it means. Theyre just repeating verbatim and overacting for dramatics.
      The diction problem here is clear. Mentally one is better than the other. Technical skill level is involved too as well. And damraus acting methods even limit her vocal capabilities. Shes movimg around so much that she runs out of air.

    • @flav2689
      @flav2689 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@FairyLotusUnicorn I’m afraid I totally missed your point. We were talking about German phonetics and dictation in opera - what does Shakespeare, various English accents and the connection between memorising and understanding some difficult sentences have to do with that? Maybe it’s just a language barrier but I cannot see your point at all, unfortunately.
      And sure, Deutekom was technically better than Damrau but that is also another topic - irrelevant here. The last sentence was the only one I could make sense of - acting like the way Damrau does, probably affects the breathing and so the singing and articulation.

    • @krischan67
      @krischan67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I like the evil of the Queen of the Night to be a bit emotional and Diane Damrau can afford to invest more into acting while singing while Cristina Deutekom had to invest all concentration into getting the difficult parts sung properly, without doing anything else, so Diane has an edge here to my taste... but I have to admit that Cristina's triplets at 2:05 are the best I've ever heard. Each time I hear them, a chill goes down my spine, they are awesome!
      As a native German speaker, I have to say that Diane's pronounciation still has a few flaws, however. For example, when she sings "Tod und Verzweiflung", it sounds like "Tod und Verzwaflung".

    Cristina Deutekom was and remains the best Queen of the night to date.
    I don't care one bit that she doesn't """act""". This is one of the most demanding things Mozart ever wrote and her precision is formidable.
    Besides, she has the timbre and the volume of a full spinto which suits the role incredibly well.

    At +75 years of age and a professional musician for over 50 years, I've absorbed a great deal of many musical venues. I watched each of the above performances most carefully. In my opinion, Cristina Deutekom stands above the rest. Oh, the others are ALL fine professionals, bringing excellent acting and singing to their performance...but. I am judging "voice" only. Cristina's singing appears almost effortless in the full range of this aria which covers two octaves, from F4 to F6 and requires a very high tessitura, A4 to C6. Excellent Diction! Magnificent rendition!! Bravo, Cristina! How I wish she was alive today to receive accolades from this generation for the height of perfection she brought to those roles she sang! John

    She doesn't need dramatic acting
    Her voice is powerful enough for that, if not too powerful which is terrifying and impressive at the same time
    Added to this is her imposing presence and diction
    If we compare her to contemporaries such as Diana Damrau or Sabine Devieilhe, who compensate for their lack of power with excessive acting, we realize that she has no need of dramatic acting.

    wym she's stoic and cold? her acting is in her EYES. look! the barely-constrained anger, that cutting gaze that catches the light like the glint off a blade. Cristina was born for this, singing this aria as a warm-up since she was a little girl. of COURSE she knows how to subtly bring out the emotion behind these lyrics!

    I've always loved Diana Damrau's version of this but I decided to look up different singers perform this and found Cristina Deutekom's version and OMG. 😮At first I wasn't sure because there wasn't the dramatic acting like Diana but I just watched and listened and was floored. So freaking good! When she got to the triplets my jaw was practically on the floor. I've never heard anyone sing like that. I also watched it again from the beginning after I was in shock from listening to her singing. I watched this as a whole and thought this performance was very clever. It felt more like this was a speech or monologue, just done musically. She was a queen issuing an order to her daughter. They let the drama be the order to have Sarastro killed which allowed Cristina to perform as a Queen, regally and majestic. So incredible and right up there with Diana for me, well maybe even a little above that simply for the incredible vocality she portrayed. 😎👍
