    Charles Dance is a brilliant actor. He makes Tywin one of the most intriguing characters. The verbal sparring between Tywin and Arya are some of the best moments in the show. From how she handled herself in those scenes with him, you'd never know that this was Masie Williams first real role.
    And I do believe that the Hound was showing protectiveness towards Sansa in that scene.

    "She pulled a chair close to the hearth, took down one of her favorite books, and lost herself in the stories of Florian and Jonquil, of Lady Shella and the Rainbow Knight, of valiant Prince Aemon and his doomed love for his brother’s queen." - Sansa IV, Game of Thrones
    In a way Tywin was describing Sansa while trying to get a gauge on Arya's personality. While Sansa represents the traditional feminine archetype you would expect in a period peice, she too in her own way has shown a surprising resilience to immense adversity, not unlike her younger sister who relates more to the wars and conquests of Rhaenys and Visenya Targaryen.

      The problem is that they made obvious(I mean very obvious) that Sansa's type is bad, Arya's type is good. Specially in the first season, but later on too. I mean the story was about "Sasna is stupid for this, she is stupid for that, until Arya is super for this, she is super for that", and etc.It was strange. I mean the story is usually pointing out things are not so simple, and sometimes very complicated. Like Jame as a kingsguard killed Arys the Mad king. It wasn''t an easy situation. But when it's about Sansa and Arya, the story is totally one- sided. Like 100 precent.Arya often portayed as someone, who is perfect in everything, and Sansa is portayed as someone who can not do anything.

      Now to attack them raid, and then leave, sure fine.
      But him thinking he can hold the castle with those few man is insane...
      and for him to think the Sea driven army of sailors to march inland and stay there...again..just plain stupid..

      His first mate Dagmer sort of gave him the idea as well. If I remember correctly, Theon told Luwin in this episode that he expects his sister to send reinforcements from Deepwood Motte that would allow him to hold the castle. He isn't the brighest, but he knows he can't hold Winterfell for long with 20 men. Of course, we know what happens in the next episode.

    Love how they bait the obvious trope of Jaime pulling some bullshit to escape, only to invert it and have him be captured 5 mins later. It's these little tweaks that make the storytelling even better. The Jaime Catelyn tent scene is excellent too. The different things they talk about : oaths and loyalties, Jaime saying "Kingslayer? And what a king he was!", how he taunts Cat about hating the bastard son. All these different topics they touch on, all of them very significant.

    Ygritte is right, there were people on both sides when the wall went up. But that was 8000 years ago, the people living north of the wall now live there by choice because the don't want to bow to a King, or even a Lord. They choose living in ice and snow as opposed to living in the south with the "Lords and Ladies." If a Wildling wants to leave, they can climb the wall or sail around it and join the rest of Westeros. We get an example of this with Osha. She's a Wildling who came to the south and integrated by serving House Stark.

    • @Deorman

      No one choose living in Ice and Snow, your analogy is like saying Native american Choose to live in reservations.

    • @jakejones8032
      @jakejones8032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Deorman What happened to the Native American's is not remotely close to what happened to the Wildlings. What a strange thing to say.
      The Wall was built by the Starks with the help of Giants and Children of the Forest, people from the North. They built it to prevent another invasion from the White Walkers and an army of dead. There was no war between people, there were no Wildlings at the time. Anyone still living north of the wall chose to remain there, even with the risk of White Walkers. But, that was 8000 years ago.
      The present Wildlings are descendants of barbarian tribes. Probably defectors from Westeros who didn't want to be ruled. They don't have any claim on Westerosi land. They call themselves Free Folk, and yes, everyone of them chooses to live up there rather than follow the laws of Westeros. They don't have laws, if they want to leave to live in the south they can. They just have to get around the wall and obey the laws of Westeros. Like Osha.
      You should check out her reaction to Season 1 History and Lore, it goes into a little more detail.

      @@jakejones8032 The whole north was inhabited by wildling, when people come, conquer and decide this is their lands and their rule, that's exactly similar to what happen to native american.
      You talk about their claim on the lands south of the wall, well what's the legitimity of the claim of people who erected the wall, why is their rule , way of life taking precedent over the wildlings who had to exile themselves norther.
      There's no rightful claim from anyone, just conquer and pushing other civlization around.
      If they got to stay and live their way south of the wall they would've instead of freezing their arses.

    • @Deorman
      @Deorman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jakejones8032 Your comment explained it enough, what you said is correct.
      What Is baffling however is how in your own words , "they could choose to bow to lords and ladys, or go behind the wall" could be describe as a real choice.
      in what manner of twisted logic "is bow and obey or get out" could be described as a choice in anyone's book.

    • @jakejones8032
      @jakejones8032 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Deorman "obey or get out" is how every country on Earth works. How is that twisted logic? Every country has laws and you are expected to obey them. If you break the laws of a country, there are consequences. If you don't like the laws of the country you are in, you can choose to leave. That's the choice the Wildlings made when they left Westeros and chose to live north of the wall. And any one of them can choose to come back to Westeros if they are willing to follow it's laws. No one was forced to live beyond the wall, they all chose it, or their ancestors did at some point in the past. Also, no one is forced to stay north of the wall.

    The Jon Ygritte stuff does tell a bigger story of the 2 Norths.The wall divided the North for thousands of years. Animosity was always there. But the diverging fate of the 2 Norths was fully sealed when 300 years ago Aegon the Conqueror consolidated the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros into a single unit ruled by one king, and the wall became the northern extremity of his empire. So part of the North (headed by Winterfell) bent the knee to Aegon Targaryen & became subjects of the Iron Throne, united & assimilated with the other kingdoms. They prospered, but they were ruled by the South & had to assimilate themselves with the dominant "Andal" culture of the South. While the North on the other side of the wall were left out, impoverished, looked at as outlaw savages. But they were free, so they're the ones who retained the customs & traditions of the "First Men" culture of the old North. Now Jon being an assimilated Northman guarding the wall, the Wildlings would look at him as sort of a sellout, while Jon would naturally be conflicted keeping his own ethnicity out for a southern throne. It's important to understand this conflict of loyalties going forward.

    • @tariizm1500

      First Men culture and houses is not just in the North there is First Men houses in Dorne, Reach Riverlands as well and Targaryens never forced the North to assimilate... only First Men culture/tradition Targaryens banned is first night right which is a good thing for small folk bcz of that law Northerners raped many many lowborns

      @@tariizm1500 Oh yeah, no doubt. Houses descended from First Men can be found everywhere. Like for e.g. House Strong in the Riverlands. But finding a thriving First Men culture is a lot harder. Yes, you'll find someone keeping the old gods here and there in the south, but as a way of life First Men culture has pretty much disappeared from the south. I won't say the Targaryens forcibly assimilated them. First men culture was already disappearing after the Andals came, before the Targs. It's more like during Targ rule there was no incentive being a First Men. They didn't persecute the First Men, they just let the culture wither away. Unlike the intense love-hate relationship the Targs had with the Faith.

Although we are following the high houses and are provoked to empathise and root for particular characters its important nit to overlook what horrors the common people are experiencing for no reason than high lord politics. Ygrit the wildling made this point in this episode - why are the little people fighting eachother for the politics of those in power. Whether it is Bran and Rickon who were bruitalised its the horror of the actions Theon is willing to do which is really pointed.

    I always thought that the reason Tywin didn't put 2 and 2 together with Arya here is because he simply couldn't imagine a little girl surviving out there in the wild for so many months. He probably had no idea Arya was such a tomboy; he might have assumed she was a typical delicate, simpering princess-type like Sansa.
    All he knows is that she went missing, and not even the best spies of King's Landing (the Spider & Littlefinger) know what happened to her. The intelligent assumption would be that she was killed in the confusion after Ned's death - or that even if she escaped, an 11-year old noble girl would stand out a mile and wouldn't last 5 minutes in the middle of a civil war without being ransomed or killed. It would have just seemed like too much of a stretch for Tywin.
    He probably reasoned that she was a daughter of a minor nobleman who had been killed in the civil war and had just lucked out, having been rescued by Tywin before the Tickler picked her to be the next dinner for his pet rats.

    Circei has always chafed about the traditional role of a noblewoman, i.e. being a possession/prize, because she thinks she's smart enough to be running things on the same level as the men. This gives her a certain level of empathy for Sansa, even though Cersei's simultaneously doing exactly the 'nobleman' thing and marrying her off against her will. You ca see from that scene and the one with Tyrion that Cersei's more ruled by emotion than she wants to be. So can she really be smart too?

At the same time, she's frustrated in Sansa's seemingly slowness and her inability to play the game in the Red Keep whatsoever. But is Sansa really as dense as Cersei thinks? Is she a babe in the woods? Or is she playing the game her own way? Is Cersei underestimating Sansa's cunning?
