The Sopranos was such a visceral show. I especially love how there was no real continuity from episode to episode. It was like watching a story where one part would pause to shed light on something happening simultaneously that was completely different but in some way related. I’ve always said it’s like watching 84 short films, because there were so many episodes that had they been stretched out another 30 minutes could have been feature length films in their own right. College, The Happy Wanderer, Funhouse, University, Pine Barrens, White Caps, Long Term Parking, Luxury Lounge, Soprano Home Movies……..these are some of the favourites that instantly come to mind.
Sopranos. 80% heavy breathing. 20% mafia stuff. Naghhh james wasn't exactly the healthiest of men. But a hell of a actor. He had my convinced of being a mafia leader
That NY Post headline was so stupid -- if you watch the David Chase documentary, it was clear Gandolfini gave the money to the lower level cast members. Edie Falco was the second highest paid actor on the show next to Ganolfini, meaning she was making millions and millions per season. And Falco was JOKING in the documentary when she pretends to be "mad" she didn't get $30k.
Bible study is much needed right now & you have the anointing to lead people & help people who really need a man like you as a role model in their lives. Hats off to you brother. May God bless you & your family. I'll definitely stop in & watch.
There's also the non-acting stress of that position. Pretty much everyone is dependent on you being an awesome actor for the show to continue for them to keep having a job, all the way from the actors to the crew.
That's soft, have you hard about people who lay bricks and do other manual jobs? Successful actors are spoilt brats compared to real workers. Like saying that being a born again preacher/scammer is difficult
Thank you 💛 Michael. James was brilliant in the Sopranos. That role was made for him. So sad he died so young. He is missed. A great friend and a great actor. 👍 ❤
Hi. I am a physician and I totally get your point about how knowing the truth about the life makes TV shows about that subject hard to watch. I can never watch any medical drama. Usually the two reasons are that if something is super realistic(very rare) it's like bringing your work home. The other reason is that some of the things that they do are so outlandish that it is impossible for me to watch.
@Micheal-Knight- I'm always thinking about it when I re watch both. The Sopranos acting kinda trended down after 5. Meanwhile, Walt turned into the Micheal Jordan of bad guys in Season 5. The whole cast put up Emmy performances in season 5. It was and still is a joy to watch. It never lets me down.
@Micheal-Knight- maybe . But I think it was the fatigue of the show. He hated the character. He hated David. He was older, overweight, and whatever he was on(im not going to speculate). You see it with the end of G.o.t. also. The characters are there, but not really. Most of them were also tired of the show. The writers will check out as well when they know the end is near. That's what makes breaking bad final season so much better. They didn't check out. They checked in.
I met James Gandolfini working as a security guard at AMNH two times. Honestly he was pushy and not nice to the guards. He acted like we should let him in for free with no security check. Also he thought we needed to let his friends in free with no security check. This being said he was great as Tony.
I had the pleasure of meeting James Gandolfini in person when he was filming the last two episodes of the Sopranos. He was a really nice fellow who was very supportive of law enforcement. Also, the camera did not fully capture just how large a man he was; he easily stood over 6' tall with huge hands and broad shoulders. It was really heartbreaking to learn of his passing at a much too young age.
Watching for the very first time right now. On season 3 and it’s phenomenal. The entire cast especially James is just perfect. I’m glued to it when I’m not working or at school. This show is just wonderful. It’s 25 years old so sadly of course I already knew/know some major plot lines going in but it hasn’t taken me out at all. James Gandolfini is just amazing man. Rest in peace to an absolute legend in the industry.
Francis Ford Coppola said in making Godfather 2 that American actors are insecure and have to be coached. Where the Italian actors came prepared with what they thought the scene should be. Very different approaches trying to make Art.
@@anthonyserrano7782 Maybe it's the American Directors that create that culture of insecurity. Some seem to micromanage and interfere with an actor's approach.
Michael as a Neapolitan, yes the show was very out there. There are no women Camorra bosses but when they go to Italy in one episode, the Camorra boss is a woman. No drug dealing is also BS. The Camorra deals drugs, lots of drugs. There was an area in Naples that didn't even have a name, it was a numbered section called the 167. This was known as an open drug market controlled by the Camorra. They even had a city bus route out to the area to bus in addicts and bus them out. It's been mostly cleaned up now but back in the late 1990s early 2000s, it was the wild west. If you weren't buying drugs, you didn't go down there or you're not coming back out. It was so bad that they tested new formulas on addicts. Basically seeing how far they could push the purity before it would kill people. Really sick stuff...wIth that said, there was a few things that were related to real life in the show. Tony was in waste management. The Camorra at the time the show aired, had their fingers in waste management and illegally dumping toxic waste for big corps from all over Europe on private land around Naples(La Terra dei Fuochi). It has caused all sorts of birth defects and cancer in the population that live in these areas. Not sure if you have read the book Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano but you should give it a read. He infiltrated the Camorra and exposed so much of their workings. Another business they are in is fashion. Big fashion brands(Gucci, Versace, D and G, etc) would go for the lowest bidder down in southern Italy to make their garments. One of the guys who was a dressmaker made a dress that ended up on Angelina Jolie at the Oscars and the guy never got credit for it. He designed it and made it himself. The brand slapped their name on it and gave it to the movie star. They made a movie in Italy about it but it was not that great. It also spawned an award winning series on Sky in Europe. Netflix picked it up for the first 2 seasons but then I guess they couldn't keep the rights or whatever with Sky. James was in Rome when he passed. I remember he was there with his son visiting on vacation. I know because I was in Naples at the time and I remember seeing it on the Telegiornale(TV News) and it saddened me because I knew he was a good guy and he left us way too soon.
Do they say in the show that The Camorra doesn’t deal drugs? I don’t remember that part ik Christopher gets introduced to heroin when they’re in Naples and the Soprano family is actively involved in drugs with Uncle June and Richie selling Coke in season 2.
@@scoliosis9478 It is a known thing that The Italian American mobs did not deal drugs. Michael has brought it up many times that if you were in the life and you got caught dealing drugs, you were done for. I haven't watched Sopranos in a while but I think Christopher was dealing cocaine earlier in the series as well as being a drug addict. I remember he was scared to death of Tony finding out.
You are mixing past and present, America and Italy and so on all together. It's about American mafia, not Italian Camorra. Very huge difference. Also it was in later days, not the past. In the past they did not interfere with drugs. These days, lets say the Soprano days, its a bit different. And it's true some did deal drugs, but they had to make sure they did not get caught by their own or other families. I believe Michael said that too once. Also: the American Mafia was based and has its roots in the Cosa Nostra. Not comorra. But i may be wrong about that. But Napels aint Sicily and Sicily aint America. Thats for sure.
It was the American families that didn't but not in Napoli. We all know where Maradona got it from. Chris gave speed to Meadow which is why he was scared. But RichieAprile with Junior dealt coke. Tony didn't forbid it he just didn't want him to do it on the garbage routes because it brings heat to their bread and butter...@MastinoNapoletano420
I remember seeing James Gandolfini in the Lower East Side at a pizza shop with his woman and kid. There was no tables left so I gave him mine and he “thanks” just like Tony Soprano like he was in character.
I've always liked that you said that one of the reasons for your conversion was that you could not believe that 11 (12 minus Judas) men would be hated, reviled and then finally die a horrific death for something they didn't believe in 100 percent. If they had really lied about the resurrection, it's not believable that a group of men, being under the pressure that they were, would keep that secret. That's the unbelievability of atheism/agnosticism.
Not only that but also the countless Christians who willingly sacrificed their lives before Rome had converted to Christianity. It had the opposite effect of what was intended, they thought no one would dare continue to practice the faith knowing how dangerous it was but all it did was recruit more people. I refer to it as “satan’s most humiliating defeat”
@nicholasgarnett-ly9nw NO. The fact is that they just stopped the series right in the middle of all of their lives. I think they had run out of material, and Gandolfini was probably tired of doing the series anymore. I can't understand how he could be tired of making $10 million per year.😠
James Gandolfini's presence on the set reminds me a lot of what Ive heard about Broderick Crawford in Highway Patrol. They had to film around Broderick as he would arrive on set hung over or to drunk by 12 noon to read his parts. They even hired an ex highway patrol executive to basically babysit him until he could do his scenes.
Bible commentary- awesome! Love it - No kidding I actually had that thought a few days ago about you doing a Bible study/commentary at some level. Looking forward to it!
I know that the psychiatrist thing wouldn't have happened, but I like to recognize that scenario was simply a mechanism to act as a window into the character that wouldn't have otherwise been accessible to the audience.
James said that in order to play Tony, he had to be angry all the time - he constantly had to manufacture rage. (Even punched in the door of an SUV once) When the series ended, he said that was one thing he wouldn’t miss!
They do have the DeCavalcante family on wire taps talking about the Sopranos, saying that they thought the feds or one of their own members was working on the show because of how realistic it was and how they thought certain characters and scenes were directly taken from real life events, locations and members.
Out of respect for our friend James, I recommend "True Romance" and "The Mexican". Both great movies with a stacked cast and a Mob element. James was in three films with Brad Pitt, those are two of them.
That role ruined him. You cannot play such a wicked man and it not affect you. There is no way. And I was more disturbed when I heard he was into method acting. He said once time he had to go to ugly places in his heart to play that role. I read about how depressed he'd get, how he'd drink heavily. He had just begun to put his life back together; he'd found new love. And had a new baby. But he just couldn't cope with being that wicked man on screen. It's heartbreaking. IMHO, Chase is the evil one. He wrote the script.
Wow Michael, I just bumped into your channel cause I'm watching Sopranos for the second time and I wanted to watch some interviews with James, to see the real person. But I'm glad I found you, look forward to watching more. God bless
It was brilliantly done till the end. I worked 2nd shift throughout the series- hubby taped it (yep, VCR) for me. Every show, I'd get home just after 1a, grab a drink and hit play. I was sooooooo freaking excited, that last show. If anyone even thought of mentioning the show after it aired, I growled, hissed, and threatened. I waited a long time for this. I got home, skipped the drink because by then, I just needed to know. I'm watching, edge of seat, and the screen went black. I screamed, woke hubby and my 2 sons, who thought I was injured. I'm an avid football fan (Raven's) so I have a mouth, but I created words that morning, thinking hubby used a full tape to record. As I'm screaming for the damn ending, he dead assed (and sleepy eyed) said, THAT'S THE ENDING! I didn't believe him, at that time my phone wasn't the computer it is now, so I jumped on my laptop to look up the ending, thinking maybe it was our TV. As soon as I typed " Sopranos" in whatever search engine was there, the story was blackness- pick your own ending. OMFG, were they serious??? As I said, I'm an avid Raven's fan, have been since John and Joe started here however long ago that was- I'm used to disappointment. A missed catch, a missed field goal, more recently, losing by less than a freaking human foot, or even just a damn toe. Disappointment, frustration- the very last episode of Sopranos surpassed anything I've ever felt, for something that didn't actually affect me. So yeah, great show, lousy ending- I stand by that. Edit to add- I watch reruns still, but I will never watch that last one, lol
I always skip the last one too… i remember when season 2 was just getting ready to start in a month or 2 and everyone was starting to talk about the show (mid to late 99’) me and our friends havnt seen season 1 yet. My friend and his wife subscribed to hbo on cable and we All went to the video store and binge watched season 1 before season 2 started… I remember my boy Rick rented like 2 or 3 vhs tapes and said after they binge watched them 3 tapes,he immediately went back to video store and rented the rest to finish season 1 as it was so good. We then watched season 2-7 every Sunday night at their house with popcorn beer and snacks .. I would go into work at a steel company I worked at and my buddy who ran a saw next to me and was my smoke buddy at lunch everyday , we would always discuss what happened in Sunday nights episode.,I learned him and his girlfriend did the exact same thing with season 1 renting and going back for more tapes/episodes…he even told me hbo’s subscription rate went thru the roof in 2000…it was like word was out half way thru season 1 in 99’ and we all had to rent all them tapes to catch up before season 2 dropped.. funniest time ever , we were all 30 years old in 2000. Miss the comrades, and good times … it seems after about 2005 the world was changing too fast , and before you know it flip phones were out , smartphones were in and social media was right behind it…Everytime I rewatch my box set on dvd, I reminisce those early 2000’s years ..especially seeing Tony’s burgundy suburban ( late 90’s going out of date ) and his new white 2003 Escalade esv , paulies 2002 gold Cadillac eldorado, furio’s 2005 silver deville dts, Chrissy’s. Pontiac bonneville gxp,his hummer h2, and the new Escalade ext truck that was a redesign for 07’ ( episodes just before and when he flips truck over and Tony suffocates him)…a gm lovers dream show , gm definitely sponsored that show with their cars..and coke a cola ..both 2 things I buy and drink too… great show man. I thought James Gandolfini did a great job in "Burt Wonderstone". He plays a casino owner, it was a similar role to Tony Soprano, being a wealthy casino owner, but he played the role differently enough for me to not just see Tony Soprano on the screen.
When James Gandolfini passed, I rewatched the Sopranos fully for like the 4th time, after the final episode, the very next day he passed. The family aspect is something I always liked about the series.

The reason I loved Johnny sack so much was so much cause he reminded me so much of my father even though my dad is Russian, always tough and collected but loved his family.
There is a movie called “Italian movie” with Gandolfini in it. It came out in 1995. It’s basically a proto-Tony role. Movie is dreck, but worth a watch to see Gandolfini.
Joe Pantoliano is a fantastic and now sadly, almost forgotten superior supporting player. His interpretations.of Ralph on Sopranos and Ceasar in Bound,he finds something most actors wouldnt, creates empathy where it shouldnt be,makes you laugh, makes you hate and fear him...while somehow rooting for him a bit. In both roles he finds moments for the gangster in true grief and despair and just nails it.
If you want to see James Gandolfini in another role that works for him, watch "True Romance". This was several years before Soprano's. A friend & I watched it when it 1st came out & we both commented on his character & how impressive his relatively short scene was.
Give yourself some credit Michael you did a great job at least in the trailer I’d have to watch the whole movie but from what I seen you were doing a great job for someone with limited or no experience
"Fences" is my favorite Denzel movie. Viola Davis and Denzel Washington shone like bright stars. And Denzel's character reminded me of my Grandpop which riveted me to the screen.
Setting it within a therapists office was brilliant, even though it wasn't accurate. But it allows us to really see the inner war Tony has about who he became, who he was, why he became who he was and his struggles with aligning these 2 identities. It makes him more real and more complex than we usually see with Mafia characters. He's human.

I knew one of the inspirations for Tony Soprano. Michael Taccetta was at the prison I work at. He was a model inmate. Never used who he was when it came to staff. He was always respectful and he didn't talk about "the life" as Mr. Franzese puts it. Mr. Taccetta was a nice guy in my book. He would always offer me a bottle of water or something he got from an outside food package to which I would respectfully decline for obvious reasons.
I thought this tbh. JG would get very stressed while on set which isn’t good for you . JG was brilliant in True Romance.Michael he was in Rome when he passed and apparently the Actor that played Ralphie ( Joey P ) mentioned something once about how James ate 3 steaks while doing a certain scene . Great human being, great actor. Very humble guy, shunned the spotlight, and greatly missed by all who knew him.
Yep.

Far out he DID NOT appear to want them around that's for sure. ✌️
Sopranos. 80% heavy breathing. 20% mafia stuff. Naghhh james wasn't exactly the healthiest of men. But a hell of a actor. He had my convinced of being a mafia leader
Maybe because lots of mafia bosses also did the 80% heavy breathing.
Yeah he breath heavy and sweat a lot most likely his heart rate was high all the time

God bless you Michael, James Gandolfini was a brilliant actor. Rest in peace to him. 🇮🇹
The brighter the star the faster it burns out. RIP James Gandolfini.
Of course she gott paid from James as well as the other cast members. :)

Had no idea how hard acting could be until Heath Ledger died. It makes sense Gandolfini struggled.
thats a myth people make, it's been proven by close ones that Heath didn't struggle because of the character.

Every human who is committed into his job, would it be acting, engineering, top-management or onlyfans, is struggling with a lot of stress.
His performance was pure art.
Probably the best performance ever given by any actor.
Idk Walter White gave him a run for his money
@@Hingle_McCringleberry87 I was just thinking that....
@@Hingle_McCringleberry87 Yes, maybe that was the character development. One goes up the other goes down.?

You’ve got no idea how good it’s gonna get in seasons 4-6b it is haunting. The end is like the final act of Macbeth, terrifying, beautiful, addicting.

I know because I was in Naples at the time and I remember seeing it on the Telegiornale(TV News) and it saddened me because I knew he was a good guy and he left us way too soon.
interesting read.
You’re a great inspiration. God bless you Sir.

Gandolfini was good in True Romance!
He was a chronic cocaine user and the autopsy pointed to that as a contributing factor to his death.
He was talking out by the Illuminati
I know that the psychiatrist thing wouldn't have happened, but I like to recognize that scenario was simply a mechanism to act as a window into the character that wouldn't have otherwise been accessible to the audience.
Mr Gandolfini was victim of a characters success. He sort of became the character completely and they could not be separated.
Not really. The character of Tony was pretty much against most drug use.
That’s not even the point. Jim Gandolfini 100% suffered from shooting to stardom so fast. You can see it with each season that passes.

Like your bible, these are morality stories.

First time I noticed Gandolfini was in Get Shorty, as the bodyguard guy. He was great in everything

James did change massively in the 8 years the series ran meaning his weight changed hugely.
James was so amazing in the Last Castle with Robert Redford. If you contrast that character with Tony Soprano, you see what a special actor James really was.
