It's always nice seeing people discover that they can professionally photographically exist without Sony.
Ha less of a discovery, more of a forced shift.
There are so many amazing options out there without looking at the playstation cameras, it's tiring hearing everyone compare everything to Sony.
@@HeathHolden I agree, there are many many good cameras.
@@ethanlowryphotography Sooo many options, anything relatively modern is MORE than enough. This whole more more more approach just isn't that inspiring, splitting hairs goes nowhere. Grab an old M and 35mm, you'll be in love.
@@HeathHolden yeah man, agreed. I love to own an old M, just haven’t had the spare $$$ to dedicate to something exclusively for personal work rather than commercial/weddings. Some day.
Enjoy your system I sold off all of my Nikon full frame gear 4 camera bodies 13 lenses. I now have three GFX bodies and 6 XT bodies and my goodness maybe 30 Fujifilm lenses and I’m so pleased. ❤
Hahah woah, what a kit!!
Welcome to the Fuji club!
Ha thanks dude! Excited to be here
Love this thought process!!
Thanks dude! Enjoying the change.
thanks for your perspective! as a sony shooter the last 5 years, this video resonates. i look forward to hearing your journey especially shooting medium format for events/weddings. Cheers!
Cheers mate, appreciate the comment and thanks for following along!
Exciting times mate!
Thanks mate, pretty stoked!
Nice work mate, a change is always good, it spices up the experience and brings out creativity!
Thank you mate! Yep, I’m pumped to use something different.
Excited to see this gear in action mate real soon
Yes, see you soon my dude! Look forward to it.
As an enthusiast with all Sony gear I have had this exa t thought cross my mind especially with the new gfx mark 2.
I've subbed and look forward to seeing how you get on.
It’s a good time man. would be harder to justify the $$$ to change systems if I didn’t use it every day for work, but I’m loving it. Thanks for following along. 🙌
Hey welcome to the GFX club 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I’ve been a GFX owner since the date the original came out, and I made the mistake of borrowing the new 100……..and I had to buy one to replace my original 100.
Great luck with your channel and switch to Fuji
Haha thanks mate! Such a fun and interesting system. Congrats on your new 100II too!
Like any other tradesman, sometimes change of tools you use can unlock hidden inspirations and creativity. Good choice and welcome to the club!
Thanks mate, totally agree! Looking forward to the change. What’s your go-to kit?
@@ethanlowryphotography20 years with Canon and Nikon, few years with Sony and recently went into GFX waters. I still shoot large format but that’s for personal projects only…GFX is superb system something I was waiting all these years. Fuji made MD format affordable although I’ve been shooting X system since 2016 and I’m quite familiar with that ecosystem.
@@BelowZero oh nice mate! Would love to start dabbling in larger format film, I have a 4x5 graflex that I keep meaning to try out.
@@ethanlowryphotography4x5 is my personal psychotherapist…maybe not as expensive as human counterpart but pretty close 😊. Yeah, I would definitely recommend it especially for stunning vistas in your neck of the woods.
I have made switch from Nikon to fujifilm XT5 and GFX 50s ii ...the colours in fuji cameras are amazing ❤....I'm about to buy a GFX 100s ii ...I have done 5 weddings with XT5 and some GFX 50s ii for posed shots...the XT5 for story. It worked a treat.i also shoot landscapes and products and the GFX is bloody amazing gear.
Nice mate! Doing my first full wedding with the new kit today, I’ll make a first thoughts video shortly!
Great video Ethan, well done mate
Thanks Gary, appreciate the support as always!

I love my GFX50S II but with the 55 it is slow so im interested in the GFX100 II or 100S ii. Is the XT5 with the faster GFX Models still necessary or just good because of weight and size?
Hey mate. I don’t mention it here but I wonder the 50sII and 80mm 1.7 last year and sold them pretyyy quick. They were def too slow for me. I find the 100ii is juuuust fast enough for most things for me, but still significantly slower than I’m used to. The xt5 is much closer to the Sony a7 series cameras that I’ve come from, so I’m a little bit more comfortable with the switch knowing I have bodies with more speed.
damn clicked on this video without realizing you were a fellow kiwi
Ha! Good to have more kiwis on here, seems like most are aggro Americans (not in these comments, just TH-cam in general 🤣)
Nothing wrong with switching systems. Though honestly, I generally hold onto my glass and just switch bodies.
I can perfectly understand leaving Sony for the GFX100 II… I’ve owned mine since launch and absolutely love it… Sony has nothing like it in their entire lineup. That said, I would be somewhat less confident leaving my full frame Sony bodies for the XT5. As I generally shoot raw, built in film simulations are sort of lost on me. And after owning the outstanding A9III with its godlike AF, I feel I would be doing myself a disservice.
The GFX will likely be a keeper… the XT5… I’m thinking it’s just a phase you’re going through. Time will tell. Enjoy the journey.
Thanks for the comment mate! If I could have kept my a7rv and 50mm 1.2, I would have - couldn’t justify the money out of pocket when moving into the GFX, and too much functional overlap between the two.
The xt5 seems fine for my use case, nothing too terribly fast or tricky, but will certainly update here when I have some more clicks on the body. ✌️
Man tell me why I’ve been feeling the same!! I’ve been using Sony since A7RIII and love it but man I’m ready for a change !! But I wish I could get a medium format Fuji camera ! I will be checking you out but that fresh start and new system sounds refreshing
Hahah it’s a thing! I think itchy feet can happen in any system, but there were sooo many people that switched around a7iii and a7riii that there’s a bit of an exodus.
@@ethanlowryphotographyyah idk I’m in a bit of a funk I am currently obsessed with film, a medium format Fuji for me who’s between professional and hobbyist I can’t justify . I have the Sony A7IV and idk where to go and nothing with the Sony just I guess like Chris said in the video a bit blah/bland with Sony
@@24streetphotography oh cool bro! If you quite like the film experience and process but want a digital platform, the gfx 50r and mitakon 65mm could be an option?
I did the same thing last month
Yeah? How are you going with the switch?
@@ethanlowryphotography I'm ok, despite everything being slower, the autofocus still needs improvement and tethering does not support wireless. Xapp loses to Sony creators 😅 Those are all the issues I have noticed. Everything else is great. The colors are really amazing with raw 16 bit. I consider this a worthwhile trade off
Thinking of selling my Sony A7IV to buy a GFX 50sII. Should I pull the trigger? I also already own a XT5 which I can’t keep my hands off.
What do you shoot? I had the 50SII a year ago and found it too slow, no matter how much I tried to force it into my workflow. Prob fine for anything slow moving or still.
@@ethanlowryphotography that’s what I keep hearing about it that is too slow. But Portrait and street photography is what I shoot. So I don’t think I need it to perform fast like weddings and sports photography. So I should be fine. I will be losing the video side of it since it’s not for video and A7IV video quality is amazing. However I would have to invest in a FX3 just for video or give my Fujifilm XT5 a try for video.
@@thefelixmorales yeah, if you rely on your xt5 for video (which it’s totally an undercover beast at, btw) and faster-paced stills, you’ll be sweet. I highly recommend the 63mm 2.8 and 30mm 3.5 GFX lenses, they focus well on the 100II and are relatively compact. I bought the 55 1.7 and love the image but it’s so much slower than the other lenses.
@@ethanlowryphotography how come the 55 1.7 performs slower than the other gfx lenses?
@@thefelixmorales I think it’s just trying to move a whole lot of glass very precisely, the 80mm 1.7 feels equally as sluggish. I had only used the 55 and 80 before trying the 63 and 30, and I was very impressed with the latter 2. The 30mm will be my next gfx lens purchase.
How about dynamic range?? Low light performance? Colors? Comparing with Sony??
I'll make a proper comparison video when I have a reasonable amount of clicks done, but here are first thoughts after a few weeks - so far the DR looks great (better on GFX, comparable to sony on X-T5), high ISO is sweet on the GFX but I'd cap the X-T5 at 6400. Workflow wise, it's taking some adjustment moving from Sony, but I don't see any major issues.
Subbed great video look forward to hearing about how you like/dislike!!! I use xt5 and a a7rv and am thinking about selling both and going with the gfx line up!!
Thanks mate! I did a few shoots with that combo in my transition, it’s pretty good! What do you shoot normally?
@@ethanlowryphotography weddings, families and couples. If I do a shoot with my xt5 my workflow is very fast! Minimal editing where my Sony I usually have to spend time with white balance and color tweaking.
@@ethanlowryphotography what do you shoot most?
@@JasonLawrenceNoel ah yep cool, same here. I’d say go for the 100II if you can spare the cash. Big leap but the increased buffer over the 100S II (like 65 images vs 17) is a lifesaver!
@@ethanlowryphotography I’m glad you mentioned that! I was curious about that buffer!! Like the ideas of having that x pan in cameras crop also lol ;) although not sure how much I would use it :)
Thanks for the reply!!!
I actually kept all my Sony gear but I find that time and time again, I keep reaching for my Fuji GFX.
If I could have kept it, I would have. I loved my a7RV and 50mm 1.2. Just couldn’t justify the $$$ out of pocket!
@@ethanlowryphotography I feel you. The reason making me keep it is that I have a Sony infrared A73 to go along with my A7R3 and my entire system has been built around the emount since I got the original A7R many years ago.
Why wear head gear indoors? One of you is dressed for the cold, and the other for heat. Silly.
He just came inside from outdoors, where it was cold, and sat down. I was seated inside, where it was warm. You’re over-thinking it.
Why is that even a concerned watch the video for what is is
I'm curious -why did you go for the gfx 100 Ii vs gfx 100s and s II version
Image buffer was the decider - the 100S II’s buffer is only 17 images, which I would hit far too often on a wedding day.
@@ethanlowryphotography appreciate your reply man
