For everyone asking for an explanation/commentary on what had happened: Rule is: if you run out of time, and your opponent could've checkmate you in ANY possible way, you lose... however if your opponent couldn't checkmate you in any possible way (he doesn't have enough chess pieces to do so like a king and a knight) it's a draw. 1:00 - 1:24 Alireza was running out of time (look at the left side of the clock that represents his time) with around 5 seconds remaining after every move vs. 18 seconds for Carlsen.... Because he kept smashing the board and dropping pieces unnecessarily, he eventually lost a few precious seconds every turn until he ran out of time completely 1:24.... The first argument was, since Alireza ran out of time, is it a draw or a win for Carlsen? (Is there any possible way for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza and win the game). Edit: fun fact, I believe Alireza and Carlsen himself thought it was a draw 2:16 !!! To everyone's surprise, the referee calls the game a win for Carlsen! The computer simulator 4:27 showed that there is one possibility for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza (which in reality would almost never happen, why would Alireza promote a pawn into a knight and not a queen unless he was very very stupid?) But rules are rules, 1- Alireza ran out of time + 2- there was a possiblity for Carlsen to checkmate Alireza = Carlsen won the game Now, Alireza, already mad at himself thinking he drew the game that he was so close to actually winning and beating the mighty Carlsen, completely lost his mind (and a little bit of his dignity) when he heard he ended up losing the game!! First he argued how is a checkmate possible 1:32 .........Then, at 4:45 he asked the officials to show him the rules book to confirm that by the rules, he lost....after he saw that with his eyes at 5:29, this is when Alireza hit a new low and started lying that Magnus talked to him in Norwegian at the very end which distracted him and made him ran out of time....(it seems he didn't know the match was recorded on camera)... Alireza (desperate and truly pathetic at this point) proceeded with filing an official appeal 9:00 and it looks like it was instantly trashed by the committee ... And that was it..gg!

So glad I was never one of those tantrum kids. Had a friend like that. Funniest when he lost video games - blaming everything and everyone except for himself.
So guy lost cause of time, then tries to complain that his opponent was talking and that distracted him which his opponent never said a word. He lost on time cause he kept fumbling his pieces and now he is being a sore loser.
Carlsen swears in Norwegian at 11:37 while he had 8 seconds on the clock. I don't think it effected the game that much and I'm not defending Firouzja crying about it but Carlsen did say something.
He's on edge because of the way the game is declared a loss and not a draw (it's the rules I know but it's clear it was impossible for him to lose), so that point must've surfaced. I totally agree with the claim being refuted though.
Carlsen did say «faen», which is similar to «fuck» in English. But that was way before and Alireza should've stopped the clock and called an arbiter immediately if he was disturbed by it. I don't think he really was.
@@jeschinstad He was disturbed by it, but when you have a winning position against the fucking World Chess Champion with 1-2 seconds on the clock, you're 100% focused on the game. Just calling the arbiter would mean his flag would fall. Not to mention he's young and ambitious, the stress and excitement levels of a young kid would be over the top. Why isn't anyone trying to understand Firouzja here ?
@@citrus7487 if he gets disturbed by a single whispered word which 'causes' him to lose then perhaps chess is not for him. And for a 16 years old he's acting like a child.
@@citrus7487 Also don't forget that literally the reason why he lost so much time is because he kept putting back the peices which has nothing to do with magnus whispering a word which took place way before the end where firo had 8 seconds not 2 seconds like you're lying about. Why are people defending a sore loser?
@@citrus7487 Everyone understands that the kid was nervous, for he couln't even move the peaces proper. And losing to the world champion in such a position is bad luck. But pretending not to know the rules, and then after this attempt fails, lying, simply disqualifies him as a chess player. Improving ones playing skills is always possible, but being a sportsman is something you are born with or not.
Most of the young GMs/IMs (especially around 16- 21 years old) do really have a huge ego. Most of them would really not think about the way they say as long as it could gain something in their favor. Even if it's idiotic, they would try their best to win. It's hard to accept defeat in a match where you clearly (pieces speaking) ahead of your opponent but lose because of time. It was his fault tho, smashing pieces maybe because of panic.
You can't really say "I only lost on time." If the clock wasn't there or both players had much more time it would have been a very different game and you may well never have gotten to that winning position.
Quantum Zain Alireza should’ve paused the clock and called the ref but he continued playing. If for example someone made a touch move and the Opponent didn’t call it they would have to go fuck themselves as they didn’t call the ref and missed an opportunity
Carlsen said something at 11:39 in the video and the game ends at 13:30 , meaning they played well over 2 mins after that and Alireza had 8secs at that point carlsen had about 3, so Alireza gained way more time over the period but lost it when he slammed pieces , which is why his appeal was dropped because he lied he had only 2 seconds and that made him lost the game. It one thing to feel angry or depressed that you screwed up your winning opportunity (we have all been there). He had the right to ask for a rule book which he did , but after even been proved wrong he went on to look for another excuse,if he’s qualified to be a super gm he’s qualified to know better. it’s another thing to accuse your opponents to try and get him penalized just to win, Magnus understood his frustrations afterwards but Alireza saying because magnus swore that distracted him?? Common there are noise of flash lights more distracting than that going on in the background. Note: In a game we aren’t robots , you’re allowed to sigh or make a frustrating remark about yourself as long as it’s not unruly or throwing bottles in the air during the game, and the video shows magnus didn’t say anything when he had 2 secs left
well to be honest, alireza kinda did nasty things to this chess game when using pieces he just, i dont know if that was by accident or special but he just throw pieces on the board
That’s fair, but I’d be pretty pissed if I spent the last 5+ years grinding to get to GM, getting good enough to play against the world champ, then have the game be a win for black instead of a draw because it is possible, if white promoted to a knight and suffocated his king (which wouldn’t happen) to checkmate with just the bishop. Nevertheless it is his fault his time ran out, no question. The problem lies (it seems) in the rules where if black *could* checkmate given some absurd circumstances, then they are considered to have mating material.
@@ryankoski2499 it's interesting, if white had less material, say just a pawn and king or king and queen, and lost on time would it be a black win or draw
Completely fair decision. Ali reza could have just made random moves instead of running out of time. It would eventually end in a draw by insufficient material.
It's a legit excuse actually. In a professional match you should shut the fuck up not to distract your opponent. If Alireza had been able to prove Carlsen distracted him they would have disqualified Carlsen in that game.
@@SaeedAcronia he cant prove he distracted him because there was no distraction which is why its a terrible excuse. hes blaming someone else for his own errors.

actually he doesn't even needed to promote to any piece to get mated. If his king went to h8 and bishop to h7 and Carlsen bring his king to f8 then basically any check with the black bishop is mate. So it is not only one possibility like you said, but still not something any player would do
If he kept quiet he would have been known as the person that almost defeatet the champ, but since he threw a tantrum that is what people will remember...
nobody remembers shit I don't remember what I ate yesterday If that's your mentality in life you won't go very far fuck what people do or don't remember and be yourself That's who Alireza is, and good for him. c b it’s wasn’t a drawn position until the last few moves and reza was obviously going to try to win (he could’ve offered a draw as well). Why would magnus, on his own time with merely seconds left, offer a draw under the circumstance? It’s possible neither even knew it was a draw given the time crunch. The only difference with Alireza is that for him it happened very publicly and now he has been immortalised as having shaky hands (as if he's the only chess player who knocks pieces over in a time scramble), not knowing rules (even Magnus thought it's a draw because he only had a king and bishop and we're so used to that being an automatic draw), being histrionic and lying (as if none of us ever got upset and handled ourselves poorly).

If white had had nothing but a lone king, the game would have been ruled a draw because white needs pieces or pawns against a lone bishop so that white's own king can possibly be blocked in by them and checkmated by black's king and bishop.
@@sethmachakos9926 he could checkmate if Firouzja played the worst moves possible
@@sethmachakos9926 actually he could, but Alireza had to play the absolutely the worst moves. There is a possibility to checkmate if the white king is in the black corner and the bishop is on the light square next to king, but is very unlikely, however not impossible, according to rules
“His opponent was speaking loudly”... legit cameras next to their face and it doesn’t pick up anything. This kid is delusional, the only noise I heard was you complaining and acting out like a sore loser.
The only noise I heard was the sounds of the peices he was knocking over hitting the board.
@@Frank-Reynolds Dont forget the fucking jet engine they keep in the back
@ThunderHawk but it was Carlsen's time.
Magnus should've said "you mad bro? get quicker kid"
