- "Gilding the Stanley" - My Customization of the Stanley 199 Knife
This is my try at customizing a Stanley 199 utility knife per the "Stanley 199 Challenge" proposed by @357magdad over on @ScoutCrafter 's channel. I was running late and didn't have any paint stripper so I went full industrial black enamel over the standard paint coating. After several light coats of black enamel I used gold leaf to gild the checkering in the handle. Sealed the gold then for good measure gave the entire thing a few coats of gloss clear enamel. Finally I got rid of the terrible looking screw the knife came with and replaced it with a steel slotted flat-head screw from my collection of old screws. I heat-blued the screw to a nice dark color which I think looks a lot nicer in the knife.
Thanks for watching!

Wow! Your Stanley looks amazing!
Thanks Robert!
Wow! Gold leaf! Very cool!
The most elegant entry by far!
That's a new twist, Turned out awesome.
Good playing on a box cutter must be the most incredible act of creativity.
The gold leaf came out nice!
Thanks. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. The blued screw turned out a lot darker than it appears in the video; matches the black paint now. Going to be doing a lot more blueing in future projects I think.
I know I'm late to the 199 party, but this is fantastic!
Truly spectacular nice job.
Thanks I appreciate it!
Beautiful knife there bro. I have a few vintage Stanley's and I'm telling you they're a better knife than the modern bells and whistles ones, folding and all that. Just much more reliable use out of my Stanley's than a £20 hardware shop knife. The blades seem to stay in place better. Great video, lovely guilding, never seen that before. Liked and subbed
Nice job with the gold leaf 👍🏻
Nice job! The gold leaf is a nice touch.
wow! i dont know what to say except, wow!!!
LOL thanks!
By far the most elegant entry I’ve yet seen. Your finishing skills are amazing, where fine attention to detail and patience count. I wish I knew how to apply precious leaf overlay! Nice job 👍🏼
Thanks. It's super easy and very forgiving to work with.
Turned out great, David! My video should go up tomorrow... can't wait to share!
Nicely, nicely!
Can't see it looking that good after a few weeks as a carpenter lol
Wow, I did black and gold (black chrome actually) but nothing like this! Very cool!
Pimp my knife, awesome.
Awesome! May I ask why you heated the screw?
To heat blue (blacken) it. It doesn't show too well in the video, but it's almost completely black after that.
A gold plated Stanley?
lol. Spends 8 hours on a box cutter that is still work $6.00. What was the purpose cupcake?
