Customizing a Stanley No. 199 Utility Knife and Thrifted Sheath - STANLEY 199 Challenge

  • This is part of ScoutCrafter's ( / scoutcrafter ) and 357MagDad's Stanley 199 Challenge where you take a Stanley 199 utility knife and customize it.
For mine I wanted to make the knife look classic and well used. To darken the texturing I used Birchwood Casey Aluminum Black and then sanded the sides smooth down to where started to blend with the texturing. I then made a sheath out of thrifted leather from an old purse.
To help support my channel, so I can continue to provide videos like this, below are Amazon affiliate links for products used in this video:

You really did a nice job with this entire project. It should be pointed out the customizing/polishing/buffing these exact knives has been going on literally generations. I have bumbled on many in my time that I swore were chromed. Just giving credit to the old timers where it is due (I’m not one before you ask 😂)

Another source of leather is from old furniture. I peeled the leather off an old couch before disposing it. The best part is the back of the couch or chair as it is one big piece, unused and clean.

Nice, I have an old 199 that I powder coated Stanley yellow, then in the little box where the script is, I painted black and then sanded down the lettering to reveal the yellow powder coat, so I ended up with yellow text and a black background. I've used it a lot since then and the powder coat seems to hold up really well!
