Terence Young, not Terence Fisher dievted the first two films.

The most lasting part of the movie for me...as always, was Shirley Bassey singing GOLD-FINGER. That song still whirls around every time you hear it. PURE....GOLD!

Goldfinger was the first Bond film I saw. After that, I was hooked.
The first James bond movie I saw was the spy who loved me, and I thought it was the best, then I saw golfinger in a movie club, and become a fan of James Bond
Although the film doesn't make any sense at all (crushing a Lincoln Continental - axles, engine and all - into a cube that would weigh much more than the vehicle transporting it back to Goldfinger; five light planes supposedly sufficient to spray a metropolitan area with nerve gas), the whole thing was done with such fine pacing and flair that it remains entertaining, except for feminists (Bond slaps Dink on her tush and tells her to "run along - man talk"!).
@@weveri6 Yes. Being in the auto repair business, the first thing that came to mind, especially the the Lincoln is picked up by the crane and we see the engine is missing, is all the other parts fitting into a 2X2X2 foot cube would require it be melted down and poured into a mold.
Harold Sakata as the menacing henchman "Oddjob" was hands down the most memorable villain in all of James Bond. films.
He was a Hawaiian pro wrestler , quite famous in Hawaii.
The frisbee hat was cool when I was 12 years old. Now, I find it stupid. As with most everything about the early Bond movies, beginning with Goldfinger. The only one that I can stand now is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Mostly because of Diana Rigg. The decision to ditch the camp and go back to a grittier, more realistic Bond did wonders for the franchise. In short, Connery's reservations about where Bond was headed were correct. The formula got seats in theaters filled, but it got stale.

Met Harold Sakata in St. Louis at Frank Moskus in Exile. Great sense of humor and a laugh you could hear a mile away. A very nice man.
I think he did a cough medicine commercial on TV.
@@rollydoucet8909 He did! He was kicking and chopping up the house in a coughing fit until his wife gave him the medicine. Funny for the time.
I met him on the set of "Impulse" in Palm Beach in the 70s. He smoked a Sherlock Holmes-style pipe and was, indeed, a kind and gracious gentleman.
PS; He was almost killed on the set that night doing his own stunt. Very frightening.

Many years ago, I visited an aircraft factory in Switzerland. When we drove in I remember thinking I had seen the place before somewhere - of course I had. It had been used for the external shots of Goldfinger's Swiss lair ! The mapping on the tracker in the Aston Martin is correct.

Yeah, I've never understood the hate Thunderball gets. It's not quite as good as Goldfinger or From Russia With Love, but for me it's definitely the third best (of Connery's films) after that. It's easily one of the most stylish of the Bond films, a time capsule of pure 60s glamour. And the underwater battle scene still holds up today, which is more than can be said for some of the later denouements (cough Moonraker cough cough). An amazing piece of action choreography. I'd definitely rate it among the top 5 or 6 Bond films of all time.

In 1967, I actually sat in the DB-5 Aston Martin, used in "Goldfinger"! It was on display for
2-3 days at the Abraham & Strauss dept. store in Manhasset, NY & my friend, an employee,
let me sit in it after the store closed & the security guard left! By today's standards, it was
pretty basic except for the phone in the door, tele-screen & ejector button! It was great
fun to be in a place where one of the most famous films of the year was made!

Had I known I'd have seen it too. I was in grade school at the time, at Manhasset High School just a stone's throw from there.
for years it was on display in a giant glass case outside of a restaurant in Vancouver British Columbia. I made my parents stop there on a family trip after seeing Goldfinger on TV in the early 70's. I must have made quite a disturbance because they never stopped for ANYTHING until our destination LOL
Yes - I saw the Bond car at A&S In Manhasset too along with one of Hilter’s cars.
I had a similar experience at the 1965 New York World’s Fair. I was about to enter 5th Grade and my older sister was a flight attendant (stewardess) stationed at JFK who invited me to NYC. The DB5 was surrounded by red velvet ropes but my sister talked the security guy into letting me take photos of the interior, so in I went! I had no flash attachment so the photos didn’t turn out, but it was my greatest thrill at the time.
The first four Connery's movies are the classic.
Terence Young directed the first two Bond pictures, Dr. No and From Russia, With Love. He was not asked to direct Goldfinger. The director’s chair was given to Guy Hamilton.
Terence Fisher directed the technicolor Hammer Films remakes (most popular, Horror of Dracula) of the B&W Universal Horror films from the thirties and forties.

Thank you for a very informative mini documentary on Goldfinger. However, the director of the first two movies was Terrance Young, not Fisher. My personal favorite Bond film was From Russia With Love. It had a great plot with authentic locales and two of the most memorable villains in Bond history: Lotte Lenya and Robert Shaw. The fight aboard the Orient Express between Sean Connery and Robert Shaw was edge of your seat. Thanks Again.
That fight was so real with Shaw, I often wondered if anyone really got hurt during the filming. One of the best fight scenes ever filmed.

@@brittlyle3523 This is a late reply to your comment, but according to a documentary the scene was well rehearsed beforehand. Only once did they use stunt doubles during the fight; Connery and Shaw did most of their own fighting.

Goldfinger is by far my favorite Bond movie, partly for all of the things surrounding Bond, but partly for the character of Mr. Goldfinger himself.

No one could come even close to Sean Connery. He was perfect for the part of 007. It’s as if Fleming had written the part for Connery

The late Sean Connery was the greatest 007 ever. Everyone else was ok.

and Dr No & Goldfinger, I’d take Dalton over Brosnan anytime.

I thought Casino Royale with Daniel Craig was a very good film. That opening scene with Craig chasing that guy on the construction site to the Embassy was probably the best I have seen out of Bond. Not too unrealistic. Sean Connery was great, but I think Craig topped him in Casino Royale with his performance.
Surprised that your channel didn't bring up the subject of Jack Lord. They were going to bring him back as Felix Leiter but Lord wanted more money, a bigger role AND co-billing with Connery.

One of the best Bond books! The name Goldfinger came from the English Brutalist architect Erno Goldfinger who had recently designed Trellik and Balfron Towers in London. Fleming had met him at a London party. The two towers are still iconic, now listed, buildings, and the flats (apartments) are greatly sought after places to live.

For me Sean was the best Bond ever , and Goldfinger was the best Bond movie ever . Second place for me is You only live twice , also with Sean being an excellent Bond .
Agree about Goldfinger, but I always felt Connery looked tired and fed up with the role by YOLT. There are some great set pieces and Donald Pleasance is by far the best Blofeld of all time, but Connery's performance really lets it down for me- he just isn't really trying as hard any more by that point (kind of reminds me of Daniel Craig in Spectre- Bored, James Bored as Honest Trailers put it). Miles better than Diamonds Are Forever or Never Say Never Again, though, of course- by that point he really didn't give a shit, and the movies are awful generally as well.
For my money the best Connery Bond film (so, the best Bond film) is a tie between Goldfinger and From Russia With Love, though (unlike many people) I also rate Thunderball highly.
Connery is widely criticized for YOLT. He's bored and flabby. Not that you can blame him in the context of ridiculous media hounding

My very favorite Bond film is “Live and Let Die”. All the creepy Voodoo elements & Roger Moore’s charms were iconic. Lastly, I’m a huge Beatles fan so the theme song by Paul & Linda McCartney was just the icing on the cake 🎂 😁
All these years later, and Goldfinger still stands as the best Bond film. It’s got everything that makes Bond great and more.
I, and my friend Leo Burdylo walked together to the old Grand Theatre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada after our grade ten high school classes at Saint Mary's High School on January 20, 1966 to watch the new Bond movie: 'Goldfinger'.
( It was bitterly cold}... I think it must have been at least -10 degrees F ( and probably even lower than that! ) when we walked the long 10 blocks to that movie theatre.
This was a pretty special afternoon for us ,as we didn't go (or could afford to go ) anywhere after high school in those days -except to take the tedious Calgary Transit System electric buses back to our homes in the Kingsland and Haysboro districts. . So, this was something (a little) out of the ordinary for us, to be sure. I well remember being transfixed by this movie, in particular the opening scenes before the movie proper started. That was a long time ago. But the feelings it elicited remain with me today- and I am in my early seventies! People: Your life is over so fast, that you barely have time to reflect on what happened. Where did it go? Let your children in on that, if they are still talking to you. (ha, ha).
As a kid I learning the saxophone I memorized the opening 15 second song "Into Miami", still love it today.

Okay, Goldfinger is my favourite Bond followed by From Russia With Love and Thunderball. This is a good piece with a minor (major to some) faux pas: Terence Young (not Fisher) was the architect of the movie series and Connery's Bond movie character. Connery himself has credited Young with shaping him in that role. These early films, Goldfinger included, were something fresh in the movies of the early Sixties. Thank you for this.

Sean Connery’s Bond was essentially Terence Young’s real life persona. Connery had a rough and tumble, lower class upbringing who, until becoming an actor, had an almost indecipherable Scottish accent. Young taught Connery how to dress, walk, and speak… and introduced the “fine living playboy” image into the character. Terence Young deserves much of the credit for creating the iconic screen character now synonymous with Bond.

Corgi produced a toy of the Aston Martin that I received as a Christmas present. It had all the gadgets - rotating plates, rear bullet proof pop up screen, rockets, ejector seat and goon. Damn, wish I still had that!

This is still my favourite Bond film. It has the best James Bond, best villain, best henchman and best Bond song in my opinion. I always loved the scene in Fort Knox when Bond is handcuffed to the bomb and Goldfinger simply says " Goodbye Mr Bond" and walks away. No long speech which goes on and on, but simple and effective. The famous Laser Beam scene is also still brilliant, and of course the Aston Martin DB5.

You're wrong about Gert Frobe (Goldfinger) not being able to speak English, his English was fine he just had a very heavy accent. If you search n Google you can even find a clip of him speaking dialogue before it was overdubbed.
Mr frobe had a role in another ian Fleming movie and spoke broken English but was very understandable. The movie was chitty chitty bang bang. The character Q was also in the movie.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Roger Moore in "The Spy Who Loved Me" That movie had all best characteristics of a James Bond film and the opening theme was mesmerizing, agent Triple X was gorgeous, and JAWS was an unrelenting menace! Don't get me wrong I love Sean Connery too, but I grew up watching Roger Moore as he first came on the scene in "Live and let Die" which also has a great opening theme
Went to see Roger Moore twice during his “An Audience With Roger Moore”, both times in Manchester, the second in October 2016 and he was brilliant! I’m sure he must been ill with cancer as he passed away in March 2017 😓

Loved rogers films and his potrayal of the character, he said that the character of Bond was "total bollocks", and that is how he played him, the guy is supposed to be a spy, able to blend in, and yet he can walk into any bar in the world, and the barman will greet him with "ah, Mr Bond".

Roger Moore was a great Bond, but Connery had set the bar impossibly high! Still, mega-kudos to Moore for being such a great Bond!!
Best Bond movie by far. My favorite part is the entire movie including the theme and Shirley Bassey singing it.
I grew up alongside Bond movies. We would queue for ages to get into our cinema to see them. They were breath taking and new. Russia with Love was my favourite it showed Bond as a violent thug which was faithful to the Flemming story, not reprised until Daniel Craig appeared.

As an 8 yr old, Bond was the man to me. He had the cars, the girls and the adventure. What else was there? I even had the popular James Bond attache case. A hidden gun to fight your way in, a hidden camera that worked to snap those neighborhood older teenage girls and plenty of room to store the Batman comics.
I had the toy Aston Martin DB5. It had a button on the back of it where you could make the bad guy eject out of the car. I wish I had that toy today. $$$$

Facts Verse, Bond was portrayed in the novels as living an upper-middle-class lifestyle, not an upper-crust one. He used an expense account - and had to justify it. And i believe that he could afford his housekeeper only two days a week.
For me “From Russia with love” was my favourite James Bond adventure, but I love Gold, & have always invested in the metal. 😎

While visiting New York the original Goldfinger Aston Martin was on display in front of the Russian Tea Room. I took several pictures of it and talked to gentleman in charge of the exhibit.
I saw that when it came out in San Francisco with my Brother & Father. There was a lot of build up to the movie so as kids we were really excited, and the movie came through on all counts.
Goldfinger actor was also in chitty bang bang as the Baron and he did speak in that movie. Chitty was also written by Fleming

My all time favorite Bond???? Has to be You Only Live Twice....I mean the view of the throw down in the heart of the volcano. On the big cinema screen..Wow!! Plus the theme song by Ms. Sinatra...smooth..... with all the rice paper umbrellas. Then, there is Moonraker with the same throw down in space...only Bond could be so overblown.
This remains my favorite. This one also stands out because a few years later one of the 2 DB 5's for the movie was available for sale. It was on a promotional tour at a radio station where a family member worked. I was just a teen, tried to get my folks to purchase it for $10.5K, a hefty sum then. They thought I was nuts, in the end, the radio station manager purchased it and only a few years sold it for 4.8M. He wanted 10M, but of course, that was not meant to be!

Great movie
Goldfinger had one of the two best "villain explains his diabolical plan" scenes on film (the other being the one in Gunga Din). Yes, they're a tad unrealistic, but they're so dramatic! And for once, it was somewhat more realistic than the novel, where Goldfinger was somehow planning to truck thousands of tons of gold and load it onto a soviet cruiser.

This movie was actually filmed on Fort Knox. Fort Knox is an active US Army installation. The scenes of soldiers marching and being gassed were filmed on post. The scenes in the gold depository were filmed in a studio. The gold depository is actually outside the gates of FT. Knox.

Goldfinger was not the first Bond theme to be sung by a popular vocalist. From Russia With Love had Matt Monro crooning its also memorable theme.
Also, the video subtitles are ridden with spelling errors.

My favourite Bond film is Goldfinger, followed very closely by From Russia with Love. Goldfinger wins only because it really set a fire under the franchise. I watch the Blu Ray every December, the month I saw it for the first time. Brings back memories of different times. Both films have outstanding theme songs.
