Momma brings 4 babies to the door, 6-20-13

  • Mommy raccoon appeared with only 2 babies about a week earlier, and now there's 4. We're not sure if they're all hers (two are bigger than the others) or if she's nursing orphans. This is one of the first times she brought all four babies to see us. We're not worried that they'll try to get into the house or attic since we're surrounded by natural woods with plenty of trees for them to nest in.

    To those of you with worries and concerns:
    I created this video so people can see how cute they are because it is something people like to see, and not everyone gets to see something so sweet in nature. And I just happened to have my camera near by. If I open the door to give them food they scatter, so I wanted to make this quick video before opening the door to feed them.
    I did feed them right after I stopped the video (we keep food next to that door). And no, they were not starving. They always act like they haven't eaten in days, that's just the way raccoons act. They act this way with a full belly too. ;)
    We do not need to feed them. There is plenty of food for them in the surrounding forest. And there is plenty of water. There is a huge fresh water pond (about 3 acres in size) about 100 feet from the house, and the raccoons that come to our property go there all the time. They swim in it, they eat the frogs and fish, and they drink there. It's natural for them to use fresh water ponds in this way. We have a very healthy eco-system here and they enjoy all of it.
    We like to feed them because we know it's a hard world for them (lots of bear and coyote around, and people who shoot them) and it's often very cold and wet at night. We want to give them a little leg up, a better chance of survival, if we can. Especially the babies and young ones.
    We feed raccoons when they come to the house much the same way we feed wild ducks and geese that come to our pond and put out seed for smaller song birds. But we do not intervene in their lives in any other way. There are hundreds of acres of wild forest surrounding our home where all kinds of wild animals do what ever they want, living life the way they naturally do. That includes mating, fighting, eating what they eat naturally, nesting, and finding natural homes in the forest. Also, we do not allow hunting on our property.
    The raccoons have never tried to break into our house. There's no need to - the forest gives them everything they need and they know this. They know if we are not home to feed them when they come, that they can get food in the forest. They go where they think the food might be easiest to get first (our porch), that's natural for them to do. But they know of many other ways to get food in the forest. And we are just giving them a little treat, they do not rely solely on us for food because there is so much food in the wild here.
    All of the raccoons we've seen over the years here (and there have been many) seem happy and healthy, except for occasional wounds they get from fights with other raccoons or coyotes, dogs, and other animals in the area. This is natural. We have seen many raccoons heal naturally from nasty wounds. I'm sure there are some that do not survive, but we have never seen any dead or dying raccoons on the property. We have only seen dead raccoons on the street near by, due to cars.
    Raccoons are not always as nasty as some people think. We have never had a problem with nasty raccoons. But you must always use caution when near wild animals of any kind. Even a wild duck can hurt you if you upset it and make it feel threatened. We always keep in mind that these animals are wild and we are always cautious. We have consulted with wildlife professionals about our interactions and we never do anything that the pros say is not good for them or that might be dangerous for us.
    We have been feeding wildlife on our property for almost 30 years to date, with no problems. We throw apples & pears out for elk, deer and bear. We toss left overs and meat bones into the deep woods for coyotes or what ever animal might enjoy them. Tossing organic food waste (whole foods only) into the woods not only feeds wildlife, but it reduces garbage in land fills and helps the eco-system.
    Many wild animals do well on puppy food due to the nutrition content. That's what we feed the raccoons, along with organic bread and crackers or cereal that has gone stale, and occasional fruits. We don't give them unhealthy foods. But they seem to prefer the dog food (puppy food).
    Wild birds will also do well on puppy food. I have taken in injured birds many times, and they survive and even thrive on high quality puppy food. But please, if you are trying to help an injured animal or if you interact with wildlife in any way, get professional help and advice first. That's what we always do.
    PS) I delete all rude comments then block the users.

    I have some raccoon friends in San Francisco... a mom and 5 babies. They know me & my car, and now that the babies are teenagers, they've learned I usually have goodies. (Fruit, cereal & cat kibble.) They LOVE grapes, and will come up and gently reach out and take them from my hand. They're so cute!

    Normally, I'd be concerned about rabies, seeing a raccoon out in the middle of a bright, sunny day like that. But being a mom is a 24-hour job; I know that's why that mama raccoon was out with her kits. It's a lot of work to fill four empty bellies.

    • @escapefromny2012
      @escapefromny2012  6 ปีที่แล้ว +332

      Exactly. We usually only see them in the daytime when they are feeding babies. It takes a lot of hunting for food with that many mouths to feed. I figure it doesn't hurt to help a little, and there are no neighbors around to be bothered by them and they never bother us, never try to break in. ;)

    I have many raccoons that visit me every night. One is named Possie and she comes into the house to play and she plays with my cats. Now that she has babies I do 't let her in anymore because I'd be chasing them everywhere. Possie makes a mess in the catfood and their water so I couldn't handle her three babies messes. Lol Possie was a baby herself last year and she let me hold her. Now she sits on my lap and eats cookies and grapes. They know my house is a safe zone for them to come and eat & play. They sleep on my deck and play in the trees. They live under my cat kennel. I just love them so much. I get a lot of deer, coyotes, wild turkeys, bobcats, and mountain lions too. Of course we have squirrels and bears too. I live in the pine woods of the sierra mountains in California. Love the scenery and the wild animals. Most all sense that I'm not going to hurt them. I also have 2 skunk friends named stinker and stinky and an opossum named Opie. lol
    Thanks for sharing the video. Cute little guys 😊😊😊

    Lived in Hollywood Hills in 80s. One night at 2AM the air conditioner went out. After an hour of tossing and turning I decided I should sleep on the deck by the pool on a big chaise. Zoned out, I had the feeling I was being watched in this very secluded area.
    When I woke up and looked, five raccoons were sitting watching me. The message was clear. "Hey you got anything to eat."
    Went in and got cheese. They were not interested. Then popped corn. It was an instant hit.
    Love raccoons. Unless threaten or ill they are friendly..Always very smart.

    Love it I had a mama that was buddy bring her babies every year and she would let me pet them! I gave her dry cat food! When she got older she came during a storm and I rescued some of the babies that got stuck from flooding! She was making a fuss and I could hear them crying so I went and got them and they all hung out on the porch till the storm was over! She was very friendly and she was happy to share the burden of feeding them with me. I also fed a lame deer! And had vultures come by when we had an extreme draught for water! I feel since we have screwed up their environment sooo much that it's our duty to help them when needed!

    To all who are so lucky to live in rural areas, to have wildlife to admire and nurture, to live off the land and give back to the land- thank you for your videos. This type of life I am unable to and can never have, although they can upset me because of that they also do me good. These type of videos show that people are caring, trust between human and animals, I love seeing the nature and wildlife. I usually learn things too. For some of us around the world these videos are windows and the only chance to view that kind of life. So thank you and please continue uploading

I was apprehensive at first but your message below conforted me as I totally understand what you mean its a hard enough world out there for them and to assist them - she obviously is being helped or she would not risk her safety and her 4 beauties to bring to you. God Bless you for loving God's creatures so much and also for ensuring they have a blessed safe haven to retreat too. Your video makes me smile unlike others that you can tell they "create" the scene and put the animals in danger. You clearly do not.

    Absolutely adorable!!! We also live in a wooded area, and I have been feeding the Raccoons for years, the Mama's always bring the babies, then they grow up and they remember that we provide food and water, and safety. Never have tried to touch them, although they take food from a plate I hold in front of me. Due to loss of their Natural habitat, there isn't enough food for them to thrive. I can't just watch them starve, so I don't mind buying their food. Sweet, smart little cuties, that have brought me so much joy! :-)

    • @escapefromny2012
      @escapefromny2012  6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      I agree, I never try to pet them. They don't really need the food we give them because we live in the woods with a very healthy eco-system, but I can't help but want to help out hungry babies who need more food than an adult. I know they have to go out in the woods with the coyotes to get food otherwise, so we just supplement their diets a little, to give them a better chance. Yes, they bring us much joy too. :)

    Very cool. WE had two young males, whose momma got hit on the hwy, come to our home. The first few days they would sneak in the doggy door and steal food from the dogs (though it seems it was more sharing than stealing... our dogs never raised any fuss and were just curious and concerned). We eventually got them to where they would come right to the front door, open the screen, come into the living room and eat right out of our hands. They eventually grew older, went wild and seperate ways... but they sure made life more interesting that summer.

All the neighbors who get visits have dogs lol.. and for some reason they don't seem to mind coming around after the dogs are fed. We've only seen one case of rabies and I don't believe it was raccoon.. it's actually BATS 🦇 and it's scary. Glad you enjoy them like we do! 💜💜

    I feed cacomixtles here in Mexico city suburbs. They are in such a terrible situation because the city is growing and they don't have the mountains to live. Is a shame. They are so beautiful and travel with their families just as this raccoon mom :D

    There is nothing more precious (animal-wise) than raccoons chattering. Thank you for sharing this video. I wish I could have seen you putting the food down & them eating. Maybe next time? :)
