I need to correct a glaring omission in this interview. My intention in bringing Jeff and Jim into the story was to highlight that all three of us were Golden Demon winners. As I recounted the story of my win in ‘97, I had intended to state that the following year at Games Day ‘98, Jim Ball won three demons. However, Scott asked me a question and I lost the thread, failing to give my good friend the recognition I had intended as part of our original creative trio.
I want to let the Goody PPs know that Jim’s miniature painting, along with Jeff’s, was extremely influential to me in those early days and he was justifiably recognized for that great work by also winning in Baltimore in ‘98.

Listen up Goody PPs…Hobby Gandalf here. I just want to take a moment to thank you all for the kind words and let you all know how appreciative I am of the opportunity to “share the stage” with Scott and Jon for this episode. I guess you can tell, we had a lot of fun with this one.
My “poorly maintained” Instagram pages have been blowing up all day with likes and new followers. I am humbled by this and again, want to say thanks to everyone for this kindness. Now I gotta actually add new content more than once every six weeks…damn you internet notoriety!!! 😁 Well, I’m sure there are some lore-based photos I can add…those should be easy!

As a person who painted pre-internet and then restarted now, I guarantee that the information available now makes it possible to paint better. I got back in after Covid hit and just from watching random youtube stuff and getting inspired; I put brush to model, the results were better than anything I had done before. I am sure age and patience has a bearing on it but just seeing the modern techniques and results just doubles your painting power instantly.

Don is a true gem - hopefully, lots of new Kislev models in the near future for him to play around with and maybe catch another well-deserved award (or more!) with. Look forward to seeing more of his work in some of those shots Scott offered to take in the new studio as well.

Reaper's MSP Open also uses the MMSI Open scoring system and has for many years. There are four categories: Painter, Open, Dioramas and Vignettes, and Ordnance. And the competition for any Gold is ferocious. I had to miss this year's ReaperCon, but in 2019, there were just under 1000 entries into the competition.
Also, when Genghis Con was running more painting classes and a competition we also used the MMSI system. (NB: We're hoping to rebuild the Genghis Con painting competition over the next few years.)
FWIW, I strongly prefer the Open system.
Really good show this week. Don is a brilliant interview.

It's been interesting watching the progression of the hobby since I first started competing way back in 1989. I do like the open judging system, but it can be turned into a "participation" award if the judgers get lazy. I did well with the crystal brush shows but I'm really not going to miss it.... Wanted to mention another show with an open judging system.
Wonderfest, in Louisville KY in early June.
It is mainly a sci-fi / horror/ fantasy model convention, but there has been a growing segment of miniatures entered into the contest.
So much so that it has it's own category now. The contest has a bunch of categories, but since things are judged on their own merit, that doesn't really matter. The categories are more to organize the kits, and to help assign judges more familiar with the subject to those subjects. I think there were somewhere around 50-60 entries in the mini category last year, based on the photos I took. They award gold, silver, bronze, and certificate of merit. Not everything gets an award. Only if it's good enough. The merit is just to kind of let you know, you were close, but not quite good enough to medal. The judging is also pretty strict. So even getting a merit is no small feat.
Anyone in that area of the country should consider checking it out. It's a fun time.

My first job was working in a grocery store, which I was able to transfer into the meat department in time. After working there for a while I started working at a local custom meat shop, where we processed Wild Game, Privately Owned livestock and USDA (for our stores meat case for public sale). Let me just say that there is a world of difference between what we would see, being as our slaughter would bring back most of the stocklive simply quartered versus what some who has only worked at a grocery store where everything is already broken down to primal cuts or more all vacuum packed in a box.
It also gives one a whole new respect for the foods and meats that you eat as well.

I think the winner take all attitude comes more from the tournament nature that mini-gaming has. As to where the historical stuff while does have some tournaments its more about the process, hobby, and just knowing the history as we all have had relatives that participated in the various wars/conflicts. Thus it has more of a feeling of honoring them.

    • @colourful_soldiers
      @colourful_soldiers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, it makes perfect sense that gaming conventions would have a competitive winner-take-all painting contest. However, based on a number of comments here, I didn’t do my research very well before the show since it’s been pointed out that a number of gaming conventions have adopted the Open System for their painting competitions both in the US and in Europe.
In addition, I also failed to mention that even within the Open system, other awards can be presented such as Best of Show or awards for best themes. Many times these are voted on by the crowd in attendance but the judges sometimes award these in addition to the regular medals.

If you are looking for other painting competitions that use an Open system, Warfaire Weekend in St. Louis is a great convention. In addition to awarding gold, silver, and bronze based on merit, they do hand out a Best in Show award too. This year Chris Suhre won with The Adventuring Party. They don’t grade on a curve so you can get an idea of where you stand year-over-year. I know this year they didn’t hand out all their gold and silver medals, but they had to find more bronze medals to hand out.

I would love to hear Don back on for an episode topic about techniques and approaches used in historicals vs gaming miniature painting or something similar. He's great.
