    Here's a question I get asked at least once or twice a day recently, most often in my Instagram messages. It usually goes like this:
    "Hi, I like your videos (man/dude/bruuuh)!. I wanna do a bike carb conversion on my _____insert ancient obsolete engine here_______, but I'm confused when it comes to ________insert something simple and obvious that has been explained in the videos______________."
    So I try to point people to my videos, because all the info is in there, it really is, that's why I made them. But who wants to watch a 20 minute comprehensive, detailed, informative video? Many people seem to want bite sized instant simple answers to complicated questions. So when someone asks me that question above it somehow always turns into a lengthy back and forth chat with me explaining things to people individually. And while I am okay with that, and you who have been watching this channel for a while know that I make a serious effort to answer every single question I am asked, this has now reached a stage where it's simply unsustainable for me to answer all of the questions individually. So I decided to make this super simplified 5 min bike carb conversion guide / tutorial / crash course/ on installing bike carbs on your car engine. The next time someone asks me the simple question above, you're just getting a link to this video.

    - air filter for carbs (optional, highly recommended)
    - adapter plate for air filter (optional, highly recommended)
    - throttle cable modification or new throttle cable end (ferrule) / custom throttle cable bracket (this is highly dependent on the car and carbs used).
    S C E N A R I O 2 - STARTING WITH AN ENGINE THAT HAS ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION FROM THE FACTORY AND USING A MAP SENSOR FOR LOAD
    - Bike carbs (with or without TPS)
    - custom intake manifold for bike carbs
    - gasket for intake manifold
    - silicone couplers for carbs/manifold
    - hose clamps for silicone couplers
    - vacuum tank (vacuum balancing bar) for balancing vacuum for a stable MAP sensor signal
    - intake manifold runners tapped (1 tap each runner) with four connections to a vacuum tank (vacuum balancing bar)
    - hoses for connecting runners to vacuum tank and vacuum tank to MAP sensor
    - intake manifold tapped for brake booster connection
    - longer trumpets for carbs (optional for better torque)
    - air filter for carbs (optional, highly recommended)

    If you connect vacuum line from the advancer directly to intake manifold without reducing vacuum force, it'll rip the diaphragm apart, the vacuum should come from carburetor (with calibrated orifice)... happened on my advancer on 3A... ))

    First time I've heard about needing to change the fuel pump. Currently looking into itb conversions and none of the research that I've found have mentioned this. Also regarding the MAF sensor, if you fabricate a plenum you can chuck the MAF on that and should be good to go. At least this is from what I've read.

    I was thinking about doing this to a Civic engine..
    D series ... The ones from Japan were dual carbureated quite longer than they were here in the States.... I got my hands on a intake manifold and a set of those carburetors unfortunately the carburetors were junk...but I still have the dual carb intake manifold for a D series and I have a bucket of carburetors side draft style that would work with it....👍👍👍

      Same here in the UK, we had the dual carb civic into the 90s on the 4th gen Civics, I turbo'd mine while retaining the carbs (Spoiler alert: it didn't last long, but that was more related to the (lack of) spark control rather than the carbs themselves)

    Hello.
    A reminder.
    Vacuum advance port on distributors DO NOT go to manifold vacuum source. It WILL be over advanced.
    Plug port and adjust for full advance recommend for engine.

      That's how it's works on every old carbureated V8 engine I've seen... You can do it either way..manifold or a throttle vacuum... I prefer manifold... vacuum advance is only for street use anyway.... in racing it is not required...

    Hey D4A. I've a Toyota TE71 Liftback and it has the well known 2T 1.6L single carb engine, recently my father gave me some working carbs from a Honda cb750 four-k and an electric fuel pump. However, I've some doubts about which main jets I should get since these carbs are completely mechanical and they have the guillotine system, so the throtle response is theorically pretty fast and I can't afford to screw up a recently built engine from the ground up hah
    Cheers from south america, keep that MR2 rocking!

    • @d4a
      @d4a  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a very tough question. I assume you're talking about carbs that have flat slides? They are on the tricky side when it comes to tuning. But if you have a fully rebuilt engine I suggest an additional investment of 160$ into an AEM x series gauge that's gonna make tuning a lot simpler and definitely prevent you from blowing an engine.

      @@d4a Yup they're flat slides carbs, I also have vacuum meters but it didn't come to my mind that a wideband was a must thing to have. But oh well such engines turn out beautifully so it'll be worth it to spend some $ in a wideband and plenty of time at tuning the carbs, thanks for the heads up man!

    Greetings from Colombia. I've been watching your videos like a guide to do this to my already carb toyota 4k engine, but want it a little bit better, so I have a little question, in the making of the intake manifold, the vacum line for the boster should I take it from all the tubes, or only one is good enough? also, should I leave the original fuel pump? I'm using cbr 600 f3 carbs. Thanks for your time.

    Good morning my friend how are you?
    I need your advice, I have a Ford Escort with a Zetec 18 engine. 16 valves, and I'm not sure which carburetion to put in. I'm currently thinking about 3 configurations.
    1st a single Honda NX 400 Falcon carburetor with unilateral intake manifold
    2nd 4 carburetors of a 250cc Honda Twister
    3° 4 KOSO guillotine carburettors 30mm air inlet and 28mm outlet
    Which one do you think would be better to power this engine?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All options are too small. You will have poor power. For a 1.8 engine you need something from a 750cc or 1 liter bike.

    how did you manage to get cv carbs to work without the factory airbox from the bike and or velocity stacks and a restrictive airfilter ?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have velocity stacks. Factory airbox and restrictive air filter are not necessary. Sure, some carbs need them more than others, but usually it only really influences idle quality and very light throttle, both which you can easily correct with proper jetting and ignition timing corrections.

    • @alexxxxx12341
      @alexxxxx12341 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@d4a is that due to the fact of in this case you have more mass airflow through the carbs instead of the factory application? Only asking because in my experience with cv carbs on bikes without the proper airbox the bike will idle but the smallest amount of throttle it will bog because the needle and slide wont lift due to what im assuming is turbulent flow across the inlet of the carb ?

    • @d4a

      I did make more power, but that's because I raised compression, upgrades cams etc. Carbs themselves won't make power unless the stock EFI is very restrictive. They will however change the power band, throttle response and sound.

    Would this conversion work on a supercharged 4age? im not too sure if the supercharger would be in the way or taken up by the supercharger itself.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4agze is definitely not the best candidate for this. I think you might be able to make it all physically fit but I doubt it's worth it. It would require an immense amount of fabrication, tuning would be a nightmare and it would end up costing more than is sensible. You could just remove the supercharger and do the carbs as on an NA engine but that's stupid too because the supercharged 4age has lower compression compared to NA (different pistons) and the end result would be likely very disappointing. Why not keep it supercharged? If you wanna do this get a NA 4age and start with that instead?

      Most carbs are designed to work between 0 positive pressure and vacuum. Reverse the pressure and the spindle seals will generally blow by and leak. The jet size and resulting mixtures are tuned around that max 0-1 atm differential. Cars like the Lotus Esprit turbo enclosed the carbies in a box that was at manifold pressure as a fix. It wasn't a well regarded setup vrs the EFI that replaced it. Almost all the production car carby and boost setups are "suck through" not "blow into" arrangements for this reason. EFI ITB's and boost were used on the RB26 and SR20DET GTiR engines. Look these up in the forums and compare them to the RB25DET and SR20DET RWD variants which were single throttle body. The dyno charts and factory service manuals are all online so you can see what hardware was needed and how they compared.

      Best thing to do is caluclate how many CFMs each cylinder will move then get the appropriate carb set to serve that, coincidentally the CFM count roughly translates to the carb bore diameter = 34cfm per cylinder would work great with a 34mm carb per cylinder for instance.

      You don't need older carbs, newer are actually often better because they also have a tps, which enables you to have 3d ignition maps. I think the 2003 r6 got fuel injection, so it doesn't have carbs at all, but fuel injected throttle bodies.
