Jaisalmer Ayo! Gateway of the Gypsies is an award-winning documentary that delves into the lives of various nomadic communities in Rajasthan, believed to share ancestral ties with the Roma (Gypsies). Two artists embarked on a seven-month visual research journey to Rajasthan, India, immersing themselves in the vibrant cultures of communities like the Gadolia Lohars (metal workers), Kalbelias/Jogis (Snake Charmers, dancers), Banjara s (salt traders), Bopas (storytellers), Manganiards (musicians), and Nats (acrobats).
Shot in remote regions of the Thar Desert in Northwest India, this 54-minute documentary captures the lives of these fading nomadic communities, believed to share ancestral roots with the Gypsies (Roma) of Europe and worldwide.
From the vast desert landscapes to the makeshift settlements, this documentary portrays their daily routines, strategies for survival, enchanting music, lively dances, and sacred rituals as they traverse villages in their relentless pursuit of survival.
The documentary follows a camel cart expedition undertaken by snake charmers and singers to Jaisalmer. It serves as a thread that connects the stories of various nomadic groups encountered along the way. The stunning visuals, accompanied by minimal narration, guide viewers through the intricacies of the Hindu caste system and the nomads' line of ancestral professions, which bear striking similarities to those practiced by the Roma communities in Europe.

I never knew the Gypsies in present day Europe, originally came from India, or so I’ve been told. I stand to be corrected.
Finally, I found the fascinating song sung by this youngster at 46:27. Been searching for it for a long time. I heard it and try to find it back but could not... I wish there could be a separate part for this amazing singer and his song. Great performance. Thank you.
