We have the same mower. Replaced the whole carburetor and fuel lines and spark plugs. It will run for 30 minutes then die. It’s garage kept too. Any ideas?
sure, take off the car cap, look for the the 4 tiny holes on the bottom edge and clean them with compressed air. If these get dirt in them, they will prevent air from getting into the tank and allowing fuel to leave it.
The other thing that can be a bent blade/ out of balance I noticed that.this Honda engine is a ohc.instead .of ohv which one do you like ohc or ohv style of mower engine
I flip the Hondas on their side when trying to line up all the carb pieces. Gravity helps keeping it all straight. A piece of dental floss in a loop can keep them all taught until you start the bolts then simply pull away the floss
Not this mower (since it has a clutch) but other mowers I’ve worked on shake because of the blade not being balanced, have you ever done blade balancing on this channel?
I have one that won’t start without starting fluid but runs fine once started. Auto choke replaced. Carburetor disassembled and cleaned twice. New air filter. Gas is good. Ideas?
sure, if you're certain about the function of the auto choke, then I'd replace the carb. Another option would be to put the carb thru an ultra sonic cleaner.
I am intending on rebuilding my father GSV190 engine which is probably the same as the engine on the video because it smokes up a fair bit when the engine is cold on startup which is due to bad piston rings in that engine, it's also coming into spring time here in Australia & the grass really gets away on us if we have some rain in the warmer months.. Three's no remachining in those engines despite my dads having a steel bore liner,it's just simply replace the cylinder which also has the cylinder head cast onto it as well. I think something is out of balance like a Blade if that mower is shaking !
Did you know the State of Tx has initiated a "EV" tax ? It seems that with all the EV's on the road, that it is affecting the gas tax the state collects. Their solution; $400. initial purchase tax, followed by $200 yearly tax on EV. It won't be long till they do the same for electric mowers.
I have had this exact mower for the past 15 years, runs great with regular maintenance. Replaced the carburetor with an oem one about 5 years ago. The only problem is that my plug gets a bunch of carbon deposit after every mowing session, so i need to pull it and clean it with a brush every time. Any suggestions on how to adjust the carburetor.
why do want to adjust the carb? Is it because of the carbon? There are 2 ways for the carbon to show up on the plug, first would be an air filter that might be blocking too much air from getting to the engine, and the other would be that the piston rings are worn and allowing just a bit more oil to burn in the combustion chamber.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks for the feedback, I thinks its probably going to be the worn piston rings like you're suggesting as the air filter is fairly new oem honda part. It also sputters at start up and blows a black puff of smoke from the muffler only for a second. It runs great while mowing , I just need to clean the plug every mowing session. Thank you for the response.
@@matthewcaldwell6763 I will try it this weekend. I think it might be it because its a dry black carbon deposit, as if the plug is too cold or carb running rich. Thanks for the feedback
I think you said you use the yellow jug of degreaser from Harbor Freight. But what ratio do you mix? Some people say 26:1 on the bottle is way too diluted. Thanks!
Thanks for the answer. In many of the shots it looks like you spray cleaner, wait, spray water and much of the dirt comes off. Is this true a lot of the time? Or are you agitating with a brush?
it depends on how bad it is, if it's really bad I would recommend agitation, but most times it's not needed. Then again I am using pressurized water to clean with as well.
Could a dull blade cause a mower to stop? It will stop after about 5 minutes of cutting. I was going to run it to empty before checking the carburetor. It's been running for 15 minutes. If the blade is dull, and I'm cutting high grass, could that be the problem?
so it depends. Yes, if you're cutting more then 2 or 3 inches of grass on a single pass, and the blade is dull, it will stop your engine. The other would be if it's stopping after a certain amount of time, with it just sitting there running. If it's the second case then you have a fuel system problem.
well for me i,d wait until the engine meets it,s maker and by the sounds of the rattling that probably tells me and it does look like it might be overreving but that,s a very easy fix thought just by lowing the engine speed as it looks like the person before them may have tried increasing the speed to make it run faster and harder but yeah i could be wrong on that one.
Great content as always. May I ask I own a Honda Izzy and I notice it is a bit difficult to start again when warm when I empty the bag. It takes numerous pulls to start it again. Is this a problem with Honda s ,thank s
Isn't the extreme shaking from an unbalanced blade? If not an unbalanced blade then a slightly bent shaft. If you gave your customer this repaired mower and he went and hit a root that'll bend the shaft. And you couldn't remove the 2nd bearing from the shaft so the bent shaft might be keeping it from coming off.
the shaking you're seeing is due to lack of oil, and years of running it that way. The upper support for the crankshaft was too much play in it allow the rotating assembly to be off balance.
@@HomeGaragechannel I think you misdiagnosed this one guy. I saw the shaking that isn't from a lack of oil. Your customer hit something with his mower and either the blade got skewed and off balance or he bent his shaft. And I didn't see you check for either one.
Seems to me that it's running way too fast on high idle. I'd slow it down and get some Delo in it and run it IF it was mine. Just like the 85 Snapper is for the Stihl battery job and the Craftsman opposed is for the Craftsman battery job. Got to be prepared. BUT when I had that blade clutch apart I'd have laid an acute balancing on the blades and see if that made a difference in all the vibrations. Happy weekend and maybe grass mowing! Blessings

Hey bro what's up? It's nice to see that after some time and persistence, you got this mower to run again. I have a question for you though. Can you recall if in all the years that you have been working on small engines if you ever came across a push mower with a small gas tank with a built in carburetor?
I have one, but with it shaking the way that it is, it won't matter. Beside it's a mower, not an airplane. If that's the case I'm going to need some some safety wire along with periodic inspections for metal fatigue
it depends... do you mean it's wet oil? if so, it would mean that oil is somehow leaking past the rings, either from too much oil in the engine or from having the mower in an extreme position allowing the same situation. This would be for a push mower but it would be different for riding mower.
The carburetor plastic cover is the worst design ever. I literally snapped most of it off as it keeps you from working on it without disassembling everything it’s an absolute nightmare. Snip off that plastic fin cover!
@@HomeGaragechannel i’m just saying the way the plastic cover is designed makes it hard to work on without removing the entire carburetor… it’s in an awkward spot, so I literally took some snips and cut away parts of the plastic cover so I could work on it more easily. Mine cranks up immediately, runs for about 3 seconds, then sputters out.. will slowly die after starting up fine. I took the carb apart and cleaned it best I could. same result.
yes the plastic is there to help protect the workings of the carb and the linkage assembly. As for your issue, sound like the choke is still engaged and not opening when the engine is running.
But I am having an issue, and I think I might have figured it out. This mower comes with the gas shut off valve. Is it possible those valves to go bad ? I have good flow coming from the gas tank. But it doesn't seem too to have the same flow to the carb. It runs for a minute and shuts off. I've socked the carb cleaned it. I changed all the gaskets.
And I understand about those cuss words flying, trying to put all those gaskets and putting that carb back on. Your video was a huge help. I appreciate you showing that process.
Loctite the carb bolts, advise the owner it’s on borrowed time. If they are replacing it they may want to donate it. I wouldn’t warranty the motor outside your scope of repairs. Just mho.
@@HomeGaragechannel I know from your level of care and attention that you do everything you can for them. You do have great videos, camera work, narration, explanations, etc.
To me that shaking is dangerous. Especially in the hands of someone that is not used to properly check the mower's health. It WILL create metal fatigue cracks in the chassis and if they will let go together, you'll have a running engine with a fast spinning blade not attached to any frame. Definitively too dangerous for me.
