Organic? Totally. I'm reading her autobio book right now. This was her first film ever and she detailed everything that happened behind the scenes. In fact, she didn't really like Humphrey until they started doing the movie.

It was a tongue-in-cheek inside joke. The director, Howard Hawks, and his wife referred to each other by their nick names - Steve and slim. Bogie and Bacall threw in the Hawks' nick names during screen tests as a joke and Hawks liked it so much he let them keep it in the film.
Hawks explained that the nicknames Steve and Slim were pet names Hawks and his wife used for each other. Not using their actual names, showed a certain chemistry from the beginning I think it has some of the best dialogue of any film. Hawks almost always has great dialogue but the dialogue here is even better than perfect. Some scenes like the one of Harry and Eddy on the boat talking about how to shoot a gun could only take place between two old friends who can read each other's thoughts and do leaps between one idea and another without having perfect logic.
I pulled up the clip to write a paper I'm working on--and I realize your comment is a couple years old. But Howard Hawks nicknamed his wife "Slim" and she called him "Steve." So it's a mixture of Hawks infusing in-jokes and his own life into his movie, and a way for the character to be snide at one another.

When you isolate the scenes it’s a revelation how much is there from the top notch screenplay to the actors’ delivery, the smallest movements and details and the perfect timing. And Bogey and Bacall’s steam heat. Steve may have been a stinker but Slim was a timed-release stack of Black Cat firecrackers.
haha. I was telling a friend of mine about how much I love Casablanca and the Big Sleep, then I saw Casablanca last night and saw the big sleep is coming up! wow. Frazier moment. I didn't even watch it that much but I just felt like Frazier. Oh well. Love To catch a thief too. Love that part when Grace Kelly says "I told the police everything you did tonight!" and Cary Grant says "Really? EVERTYHING?" Take easy!
I think she calls him Steve because he started calling her "Slim". This movie has some really great lines. A lot of really funny lines if you are paying attention.
I love this, this is one of my favorite movies I love the music and all the actresses and actors in this and I love the piano player hoagie you please beautiful music and sings magnificent
