Solid film. Completely different to how I thought it was going to be. Expected just a dumb action thing but it turned out to be a quite clever look at grief and how men cope with loss. The bursts of action were handled well too.
The film is very good at showing you the resourcefulness of man but also his limitations. Without guns they really were unmatched against the Wolves, however smart the men were. They were defeated by nature and its creatures, however hard they tried to escape it
I think what the Good Doctor failed to say (his exuberance excluded) is that this is a damn good nuts and bolts thriller that is well shot, well acted, and (slightly stodgy middle not-withstanding) well executed film, that should be recommended to all that like the genre.
The film’s A realistic tale of survival, activities men do & the realism behind it all as the film delivers strong acting & the right amount of suspense & terrorism it needs. (80%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
Just watched this film yesterday, came a-lookin' for the review. It's interesting that Bradley Cooper has gone up in Kermode's estimation since this review. Not sure when The Grey was released, but I bet it's post-Hangover, pre-Silver Linings
usually I respect kermodes reviews..but this one ..way too candid when u consider the near end scene when his wife seems to have died. a great twist. Great Movie Leeson. My hats off to your acting ability. Mark..u got this one wrote. A Real Shame.
Didn't they realize they were potentially spoiling the ending by repeatedly quoting "Live AND die on this day"? The reason the quote is "Live OR die on this day" on the poster is to avoid that.
You know what, I can see based on the "sorry to break it to you" thing why you would think I was being rude, it's hard to express the right 'tone' in a youtube comment.
Simon Mayo used to be on Monday to Friday but they replaced him four days of the week but his talented friend saved him from being totally axed from 5 live.
If, in your first reply, you had just said "I only wrote that because it was a quicker way of saying [...]" Then I would have said "oh, sorry - I didn't realise" and that would have been it.
Sorry to break it to you, but Liam WAS cold. It was filmed in a ridiculously cold place (can't remember where) and the freezing water scenes had to be filmed in a certain length of time to avoid the possibility of the actors dying. Bad acting by Liam? No. Bad judgement by you? Maybe ;)
Just because a film is shot in a place that is actually cold doesn't automatically mean the film will do a good job of showing how harsh those weather conditions are on a person. I'm aware the movie is supposed to be over the top, but IN MY FUCKING OPINION the characters never seemed to believably suffer the situation they were supposed to be in at all. And if you think you were polite, you have no self-awareness at all.
Please, learn to read. I said before, I have no problem with YOUR OPINION that the movie did not generally portray the extreme conditions well, and even said that if that was your original comment I wouldn't have replied at all. HOWEVER - your original opinion (the one I replied to) stated that you didn't believe that Liam Neeson was cold. As Liam Neeson was cold, this was equivalent to having the opinion that the moon is made of cheese.
OK. For the tenth time. If you had said 'the characters never seemed to believably suffer the situation they were supposed to be in at all," or "The film didn't do a good job of showing how harsh those weather conditions are on a person," I wouldn't have even replied to you in the first place. You said "Liam Neeson didn't look cold," which is 1. completely different and 2. false.
I didn't conclude that therefore the movie was brilliant, I didn't comment on your OPINION that the movie didn't do enough to make you care about characters (I disagreed, but it was an OPINION - who's to say which one of us is right).
Most people don't need everything to be completely specific and literal to get a point. I would have politely explained what I meant if you hadn't started your reply with "Sorry to break it to you".. Very annoying.
"Men doing things with wrenches" something mark kermode will never understand or do because hes a little girly film reviewer pretty much gets paid watching movies for free
Bad film. Didn't care when any of the characters were killed off. The pathos was shit. Liam Neeson never seemed to look cold, even after he was submerged in a freezing river he looked fine. The only positive was that it looked nice.
This is my point. Again, learn to read... please. You left an opinion that the movie was bad, then a few opinions on why you thought it was bad. One of these opinions was on something where the answer is a matter of fact, not opinion. I politely pointed out the fact, without mentioning any of your other opinions - which I disagreed with but felt no right to criticise - then you started insulting me like a 12 year old.
yes i do and the fact that mark cant get his fingernails dirty to save his life and saying shit in the form of "men doing things with wrenchs" is annoying because he has never done it... i didint see them once use a wrench in the movie they are just oil drillers and a hunter.
My point in one of my other posts is that it wasn't a matter of opinion, in fact I made quite a big thing of how it wasn't a matter of opinion (learn to read, I'm begging you). If a guy IS cold and you say he doesn't look cold (and use it as evidence that the movie is bad) - you're wrong. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with incorrectly interpreting somebodies internal temperature in a movie, but there is something wrong with acting like a petulant child when the truth is pointed out to you.
Wasn't remotely an attempt at a joke, I genuinely believe that 1. You're wrong that often and 2. Have a tantrum every time. You calling me half retarded is like if a 5 year old called me half retarded - you probably don't even know what it means and I don't give a shit about your opinion anyway. I mean, let's face it, this whole thing started because you couldn't admit being wrong - when you undeniably were.
"Men doing things with wrenches"..jeez, for such a self professed lefty, Kermode really thinks very little of working class people ( particularly men).. by the way, The Grey was one of the best movies of that year and apparently Kermode likes it but you wouldnt think so based on his smarmy, snidey ,jokey "analysis" of it. His absolutely awful review didnt do this amazing film justice.
Solid film. Completely different to how I thought it was going to be. Expected just a dumb action thing but it turned out to be a quite clever look at grief and how men cope with loss. The bursts of action were handled well too.
this review ended like the movie
The film is very good at showing you the resourcefulness of man but also his limitations. Without guns they really were unmatched against the Wolves, however smart the men were. They were defeated by nature and its creatures, however hard they tried to escape it
Anyone else find the plane crash in this movie terrifying? I thought it was the most well done crash of any movie i've ever seen.
absolutely
The score in this was great. Liams best film
What a DREADFUL photo of Simon.
This was actually a really good movie. Was very surprised
An absolute gem of a movie
I wouldn't say that The Grey is a very good movie, but it's very haunting. I'm still thinking about it over a week after I saw it.
Signal cut out at the end of the video. The world is endi
I think what the Good Doctor failed to say (his exuberance excluded) is that this is a damn good nuts and bolts thriller that is well shot, well acted, and (slightly stodgy middle not-withstanding) well executed film, that should be recommended to all that like the genre.
the film was badass..i loved it..liam neeson scaring wolves..what more do you want
I thought this movie was brilliant, Liam Neeson was perfect in this movie
i really liked it. the wolves were vicious and i liked the atmosphere of the film. it was a good movie.
"He's driving me over to Radio 2"
Classic bantz.
The film’s A realistic tale of survival, activities men do & the realism behind it all as the film delivers strong acting & the right amount of suspense & terrorism it needs. (80%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
@jaiminroger1978 No. He means the end is cut short. It ends on 'this was...'
Just watched this film yesterday, came a-lookin' for the review. It's interesting that Bradley Cooper has gone up in Kermode's estimation since this review. Not sure when The Grey was released, but I bet it's post-Hangover, pre-Silver Linings

Awesome film. Those expecting dumb action movie will be disappointed/enlightened.
sounds like kermode hasn't even watched it?
Didn't they realize they were potentially spoiling the ending by repeatedly quoting "Live AND die on this day"? The reason the quote is "Live OR die on this day" on the poster is to avoid that.
I saw this film at a late screening. 10:30pm. Nobody in the theater. Make me feel uneasy.
A little scared. Haha
@FarseerRK ahhh thanks FarseerRK i didnt realise about that :) sorry about the cut!!!
At least this internet spat is being resolved in a reasonable manner!
I may sleep for many weeks after this!
Asking Simon to shut it? I think it's hilarious when he distracts Kermode.
Love that "So yesterday DAD ! " :)
"What was the film again"???? Hello Simon. 👀👀
"Men doing things with wrenches"
Pretty much my former view of the working class.
@natyuotube It says it on the title, latest Liam Neeson movie entitled ´The Grey´. :)
he has a special set of skills....
:)

There was a prodigious amount of time wasting in this review. Mark could barely talk about the film.
Which role did you play in the production team?
OK. For the tenth time. it would be nice if he didn't end the video while Mark is still talking...
This was what?!!!!

Looks like a very old tintin
about the free watching movies part? ya im jealous but not about the girly part
I quite liked THE EDGE actually, but THE GREY is a much better film i agree.
You really shouldn't throw a tantrum every time you're wrong, who has time for 50,000 tantrums every day?
Most people don't need everything to be completely specific and literal to get a point. I would have politely explained what I meant if you hadn't started your reply with "Sorry to break it to you".. Very annoying.

He really is a prat.

Is Mayo suppose to be stupid or something?

After the crash its shit
I didn't start an arugument. You responded to my opinion with your obnoxious and pointless comment. That's when the argument was created.
This movie sucked big time.
