      As exciting as that is conceptually, it's worth noting that neither AoW 3 or Planetfall have had much genuine in the way of modding. They've been extremely limited in terms of the inclusion of new models/assets, which keeps mods restricted primarily to numerical tweaks and adjustments.

    I am definitely excited for this game. looks fun, I'm very excited for all the levels of customization. These types of games (especially from Paradox) are very much about the DLC. Here's a basic game. now lets make it an awesome game with cool add ons. This looks awesome from the start, and your excitement (comes through in your voice) just confirms that for me. I'll find out on the 2nd.

      Paradox did do a good job picking up Triumph and I think Triumph got a lot to benefit having Paradox's help even if they still seem to operate mostly on their own. The studio still made banger games everytime, AoW3 was amazing as the last non-Paradox published game, a very trustworthy studio to release quality and quantity, the games always been packed and so have their DLC's, with a ton of free content in patches. No cut corners like games feel nowadays.

    • @Ratstranger
      @Ratstranger ปีที่แล้ว

      I felt Planetfall was OK. It has 3 DLC, but none of them were "neccessary" to play the game. They added more races, secret tech, some stuff like adventure sites, new campaigns. More or less in style of AoW 3, not Paradox "let's gut half of mechanics from the game and introduce them in DLC"-style. But Paradox helped a lot with marketing, especially since theirplayer bases are similiar, lot of Stellaris players were interested in Planetfall, etc. They organised these mini-promotions with youtubers too, I think.

    • @Smithers322
      @Smithers322 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have 4 confirmed DLCs, as MoaRider said. That's more than they've done for previous games. As a player of those previous games I will say this: every one of them will be meaty and game changing on several levels. It's just how Triumph has done things in the past. There will be new cultures, tomes, units, (and because of those new units and spells), but also new structures, events, standalone units, races, whole new game systems, biome changes. And with each new DLC, Triumph spends time with bug fixes and balancing. This next year and a half is going to see the game change in major ways. And that's all vanilla, developer changes. The mod community is gonna go nuts as well.

    Going from AoW3 to Planetfall felt like a bit of a disappointment because while Planetfall's economy system was more polished, it just didn't have the same high degree of unit variety and strategic depth in combat as AoW3. I walked away from Planetfall thinking to myself "man if they make a game with Planetfall's economy system and AoW3's unit roster and customization options you'd have like...the perfect game.

    Can you simulatenously fight in multiplayer? One of the hassles about these games is having to manage your resources and wait for friends to fight, and them waiting for you to finish your fights.

    • @bene5428
      @bene5428 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No unfortunately not. As it is now the other player cant even interact with anything else so he just has to wait until the fight is over and cant do anything.
      Even if you only autoresolve ive seen some issues and players got desynced, but the game did a good job at fixing and reloading that in a few seconds.
      I have seen 2 player multiplayer and these problems are ok for that, but 4 or more players would just take too much time.
      However, I feel like this game is more of a singleplayer game anwhere and not about minmaxing and more about roleplaying =)

    From what I can see on gameplay videos, the maps are extremely closed compared to 4x games in general, and more closed than even typical classic HoMM maps.
    Don't you find it uncomfortable and very noticeable when playing the game?
    When the map is full of impassable terrain and tight passages between them, you have a lot less freedom for exploring, traveling, building cities, waging wars, etc.
    It must be a huge difference from Humankind, for example.

    I've already bought this, lets hope my laptop doesn't croak running it (I have a desktop PC, too but that is out of commission, probably broken GPU and the current ones are simply too expensive to simply go and buy one! Not to mention that both AMD and Nvidia are trying to screw you over more than usual! AMD still can't do raytracing despite the fact that the tech is standard now and not new and they are also "buy" (or forcing!) performance out of their cards by simply dumping current into them like there's no tomorrow (which generates a lot of excess heat, might also be a problem for your PSU if you didn't splurge on a good 850W or more PSU!). Nvidia on the other hand is getting rather stingy with VRAM and they are also building in worse memory-interfaces! So you'll have less and access times also go up...yeah, both companies suck and their pricing comes on top! Even with the inflation their pricing for the last few generations was no way justified and this generation is even worse!)

    Lost all credibility when he failed to acknowledge how stupid the AI plays, moving groups of armies back and forth in the same few spots until something threatening nears the army. Also the fact that the enemy AI can PUMP out units without regard to economic stability. (Unless the AI just has unlimited resources.) Your puny 3 full army groups will get dwindled down by this boring AI mechanic and there is nothing you can do about it, as the AI pumps out more units in a shorter period of time than you can keep up with. Which seems to be the biggest issue with the game.

  • @travisdunlap4526
    @travisdunlap4526 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will agree with you on the combat and AI especially. However, I have to disagree strongly on the city building/empire stuff. City development in AoW4 is as dull as a box of rocks. For those looking for the nuances of more involved 4x games, you aren't going to find that here. the buildings are incredibly generic, the provinces are generic, its just clicking to get the next thing.
    Realistically the game is about getting to the armies so you can go do the big tactical combats, and that part is a lot of fun. But make no mistake, this is no "empire building" game, its a tactical army fighting game with just the trappings of a 4x empire buildings behind it.

    Hmm I find it kinda bland that there arent any huge differences between the base units of the races. generic melee rats are just as tough and have the same abilities as generic melee humans. Youd expect the humans the significantly tougher and the rats to be a lot faster or something.. Every faction I encounter just feels the same and the unique look of them feels like a very thin coat of paint.
    You obviously put enchantments optop, some of which do have some interesting changes.. But even then it is few and far between. "2 extra damage and 1 ressistance" isnt exciting.. its still just small number tweaks.

    If you just auto complete all the battles (like I did because my wife was interested in the game but found the actual battles boring) and the game is rather boring. Even when I did handle the battles it didn't feel all that great. It has a great idea but goes really fast and kind of boring. Because you can research new spells in like 2 or 3 turns, build buildings in like 2 or 3 turns, and even throw out troops usually in under 5 turns it is kind of unimportant and all you do is quickly scan what bonuses you get and the story it's supposed to tell loses all meaning.

    Then AoW3 came out, it felt like too much of a departure from what I loved, but I still spent probably 400 hours in it.
    Now THIS comes out, and it's EVERYTHING I could ever want in an AoW or 4x strategy RPG (its more than that but that's what I want) I just CANNOT wait to play this.
    And yeah, this games modding support will do it wonders for longevity. I'm very excited. This seems like Triumph Studio's true vision of what they wanted Age of Wonders to be. After the expansions and love and care patches/updates over time, I think this will be GOAT for me. Unless they make a 5th and beat this one too.

      8. But also these are the wrong kinds of questions. AoW isn't really designed to play at that scale and trying to do synchronous 8 player multiplayer would be a mess unless you completely outlawed manual combat.

    Its funny you know? AOW has been this for decades, all the way back to AOW1. The only really big change to the series has been the territory system where you annex areas one by one and the progression mechanics with the panethon. But suddenly the popularity of the series is taking off. "the combat is like xcom" "Its like civ if..." "It sort of reminds me of total war" no, its AOW like.

    I wanna say for those worried about low end systems. There's a lot LOT of processing and all of the games when your playing a large map and a lot of units it will slow down. It's not Terrible, noticeable I'm sure given the graphics updates. but unless your running multiple i9's it'll happen, it's not a big deal

    One thing, that so far, every review skipps, for some odd reason, is: HOW does this compare to AoW3? No one was mentioned, that this uses regions, as Planetfall, which is a huge difference and something that might put some people off like me. Is there a scenarion choice, or are all maps generated? Because so far, generated maps have been looking super weird and ugly, and that also seems to apply here, from what I have been seeing. And in the same vein: is there a scenario editor?
    Also: as being published by Paradox, everyone should remember Imperator Rome. I don't count on them adding for fixing stuff if this doesn't sell enough. Most games published by them have been a bug-fest, not speaking of new DLC or patches causing more issues.

    Planetfall had a lot going for it - just was missing some of the narrative work to pull it all together (and perhaps some more varied planetary biomes) - I think Planetfall II will be interesting. Also would be interesting to compare/contrast this with Spellforce: Conquest of Eo that seems to be in a similar bucket.

      As much as I prefer the fantasy side, Planetfall was a gem. If they do a PF2 alike AoW4 but improved further and features fitting the sci-fi side, I think that would be so good.
      A dev did mention the Tome system came from an idea they had with PF during development but didn't get through, how instead of picking secret techs you found them as you explored, just a funny tidbit.

      @OrinThomas ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prinstyrio0 I think it could have been aided greatly with some cutscenes to get a better feel for the story it was trying to tell. Also would have helped to have a "choose a faction and take them all the way back to recreating empire" instead of jumping so that I got a bit lost on who was actually going to reconstitute things.

    The current game feels like Age of Wonders 3.1 rather than AOW4. While it’s not a terrible game, it is definitely overhyped in its current state. It has the potential to be a great game, however like every paradox game now that will take time and it’s clear that the support for this game will hopefully be 2 3 years.

    I have many issues with the game. However it is a paradox game so I'm sure that most of the things will improve over time. It is even the best vanilla version of a paradox game I've played so far. And I've played over a thousand hours on EUIV and Stellaris and more than 100 hours on several of their other games. So I'm pretty sure that I will enjoy the game for many years to come.
