Original AoW had feeling of epic fairytale fantasy, of the LoTr proportions. Each next sequel turned more and more into mocking parody and deconstruction of fanasy genre and itself. Still I have great hopes for this one.
I’m getting kind of tired of every single game coming with a “but performance is poor on launch” warning. There’s basically no point to buy any game at launch anymore. Just wait for a sale and patch.
Another example of capitalism eating itself. If only people didn't buy anything on day one, it'd really drive it home and put the power back in the hands of the consumer.

@@drkmgic How did you get into Planetfall? For me there is like a downgrade with a map slicing into regions and two massive tables... literally tables... with researches. Tried three times but everytime I make 10 turns and ends with "nah, I don't want to spend all day on reading these tech threes". I feel like sometimes less is better :/
@@Olagfigh sci 4x have tech trees, if this is news to you, idk what to say - but the ''cheat version'' - just read halfway/3/4/to the end of the tree, that sound good to you? spam that tree then, takes 30 seconds lmao
I love how half the review felt like a full D&D game, the descriptions were perfect. Being a huge fan of Total War Warhammer but not being bale to play it on console I am super excited for this on PS5! Great review and can't wait to put so many hours into this, thank you!
You had me at "Assassin cats on spider mounts". This game can now have my money 🤙 The amount of care and detail that the studio put into this game is amazing to see. I haven't played a game that engaged my pursuit of mysticism and wonder for a long time now; and this looks like it fits the bill. Even just looking at the amount of detail and customization that you can put into your army before the game even starts speaks volumes as to how intricate and fun this game can be. The studio clearly poured their heart and soul into the amount of imagination that they put into this, and I appreciate the hell out of that. It sucks that it has been buggy, but I am sure that will get fixed in the coming weeks with patches.
I've been a huge fan of this series for a long time. In the very crowded game release schedule of stuff I want to get this year, this one stands out. It's in my "shut up and take my money" category.
How would you compare it with the Civilization series? I like the idea of 4X games, but most of the games, especially franchises I'm unfamiliar with, are overwhelming and because of that - off-putting. I ask about comparison with Civilization because that's one good example of a game I enjoy and understand enough to actually have fun, even if I don't do everything to the best of my ability. I even liked Civilization: Beyond Earth, despite the largely negative reaction from the series' fans.
@@Fullgrym In my opinion fully half of the gameplay of this game comes from the battle setup. Town management historically hasn't been super deep, but this looks better with the province system.
I played a lot of the original Age of Wonders growing up. This seems like a great modern twist on fantasy 4x games, but I just wish that I had time to play it like I did when I was younger!

My assumption is either you've never played RDR1: Undead Nightmare & went to 🇲🇽 to lasso youse a 🦄 with a 🌈 trail (though this one also has 🦋 included in that trail), or you were talking about the fact that your character also just so happens to be some dope 🐸-man-🧙♂️-🤴 riding on a majestic rainbow-expelling unicorn.... I'm gonna just assume the latter is true since this sum of all this game's parts are truly something worth experiencing & the devs are most definitely into something here (also I just can't find myself believing you of all people haven't played Red Dead 1's dlc 🙃)
Man, I remember back in the day playing the first Age of Wonders, it's amazing the game is still getting sequels, it's one of the best fantasy turn-based games! I'm surely going to get this!
I've been on a big 4x kick lately and the big Paradox sale going on made me curious about this. So of course I went for my go to review channel. Great job as usual, ACG! Nobody else makes me feel like I'm getting no BS, quality game opinions like you!
I love the idea of 4X games but always get overwhelmed, mainly by not knowing what to do next, what to build, research etc. No doubt I'll get this and have the same experience, though it does look good.
My tip to you would be to play on easy and just dont think about it too much and try random things out. If you let yourself be overwhelmed then you will be, just don't worry, experiment, and you'll slowly learn everything.
Does it look better then AoW 3? If yes that's far more then enough for me. Also the music in AoW was exacly like that - it was a perfect background for the game - it wasn't the most spectacular thing out there, but it was fitting work well even after 300h of gameplay.

I'm a big Star Wars fan, but even I am using my money on this instead of a certain other game that's close to release. AoW4 just looks so enjoyable and fun, and if the third game was anything to go buy, it'll be well worth both the money and time I'm gonna be putting into it.
As a big fan of previous games in the series, Age of Wonders 4 somehow appeared out of nowhere for me. I've always liked Triumph Studio's take on the 4X genre and I'm glad to see that this seems to be another good game. Looking forward to playing it once it releases! Also, First? Maybe?

Game looks super amazing, i can not imagine what it will look like in a couple years with the additional DLCs flashing out the world and adding even more races and tomes. If modding ever becomes half as good as total war warhammer 3, then we are looking at a game with insane potential
I've been excited since I really enjoyed Planetfall, but there's always that concern hiding in the back. Thanks for the clean review, I didn't expect much voices, but it's unfortunate that combat sounds are a little bad. Luckily that's not gonna break it for me.
AoW and galactic civ have been my one more turn games, HoM&M and used to be but 3 iterations under ubisoft have steadily killed my anticipation for new entries to the series. I enjoyed AoW3 so I'm glad 4 seems to be good, while I'm not discouraged by bad performance I am apprehensive of rewarding it with a on release purchase plus this is paradox so we know by this time next year this will have 15 dlcs 3-5 of them worth our time and money. Come to think of it paradox is a publisher that releases mostly good games I like but never buy on release due to amount of dlc they have for most every title.

Another great video on what looks like a great game! I’ve never played a 4X game before, but between your video and the game itself…I gotta tell ya, I’m extremely intrigued! I love the graphical style that’s a blend of realism and cartoony. I love that there’s an underworld that really seems to add to the world building and of course the tactics at the same time! I love that you mentioned how there’s a fiction that builds as you play and a feeling of exploration as well. I’ve never had a 4X game capture my attention before. I know it’s going to take a lot of work and time investment, and I’ll need to put my other games on hold for a little while. Which I’ll probably want to do if I really get into the game. It’ll probably be like the first and only time I played D&D years ago, when I was in the Marines believe it or not, I ended up loving it so much and wish I knew people who played ever since.
I expect to see updates to this game post launch to address many or all or the issues you had. I think they did just too much work on this to leave these smaller issues unaddressed. Also, expect lots of future DLC just like in Stellaris. This game will be massively updated, and in several months, I advice you to do an updated review to reflect the updates
Don't for get all the mods that will come out for it in the next 6 months. I am sure there will be several groups who make mods on the same level as gigastructural engineering and acot in stellaris. Not to mention lots of smaller mods that tweak the ai or the magic system. Honestly considering learning modding so I can make some new races/tomes of magic/units ect. Endless hours of fun to be had

I loved the original, first AoW in the past of pasts. Never got engaged by the 2, 3 or Planetfall. But this actually looks (and seems) a lot better for me. Might even buy it, and this review helps with that decision, 'tis true :) Thanks for an awesome video, as ever
Definitely going to pick this up at some point, just so many releases these days so been putting a lot of games on the wishlist. Glad it's looking strong out the gate though.
I havve played Age of Wonders I, II and the expansion packs. I have played them multiple times since they released. The games are not perfect but are great games. When AOWIII came out, I bought it. But it looked and felt so different than I never immersed myself into it and the AOWIV looks similar to it. The beautiful artwork and combat of those games is not reflect in these AOWIII and AOWIV, these feel completely different games, not part of those games.
Hell yeah! preordered, cant wait. This is exactly what I wanted, 4x, bit more slow paced and focussed on the "long term play" whilst having that Crusader Kings freedom of choosing what you are exactly, CIV is great, but it gets stale quick. This looks absolutely amazing, Age of Wonders 3 holds up surprisingly well in 2023 too
I loved the original AoW and Shadow magic. Still have fond memories of my only multiplayer victory, considering it an LotR one. I was losing bad. Only one city left, my opponent was mobilizing his entire army to surround me to show how defeated I were. But, I'd managed to sneak out 2 units with forest camouflage. As his army was massing, they traveled across the map, and as he was almost ready to destroy me, I assaulted his capital, with only his main character hiding behind the walls left. Thankfully I had climbing, and managed to take him out, winning the game (AoW1 had main char loss be defeat)... my opponent was less impressed. I've loved the complexity of abilities, and unit limit's importance on good units, as opposed to HoMM's numbers game. I might have to pick up AoW4 at some point
Thanks for the review. The only other game I’ve played like this was Civ 6. And my only complaint about that game was the late game turns took forever and felt very unrewarding. I still haven’t heard how this game ends or how the late turns play out.

That persistency with the leaders is actually pretty cool. Definitely makes it unique as a 4X.

Shadow Magic was my favorite AoW game but part 4 interests me. The customization makes it a day 1 purchase.

Game looks great but I feel so overwhelmed with the amount of games coming out atm really hoping with the controller support it will run on steam deck

I loved the original, first AoW in the past of pasts. Never got engaged by the 2, 3 or Planetfall. But this actually looks (and seems) a lot better for me. Might even buy it, and this review helps with that decision, 'tis true :) Thanks for an awesome video, as ever

I havve played Age of Wonders I, II and the expansion packs. I have played them multiple times since they released. The games are not perfect but are great games. When AOWIII came out, I bought it. But it looked and felt so different than I never immersed myself into it and the AOWIV looks similar to it.
The beautiful artwork and combat of those games is not reflect in these AOWIII and AOWIV, these feel completely different games, not part of those games.
Hell yeah! preordered, cant wait. This is exactly what I wanted, 4x, bit more slow paced and focussed on the "long term play" whilst having that Crusader Kings freedom of choosing what you are exactly, CIV is great, but it gets stale quick. This looks absolutely amazing, Age of Wonders 3 holds up surprisingly well in 2023 too

I loved the original AoW and Shadow magic.
Still have fond memories of my only multiplayer victory, considering it an LotR one. I was losing bad. Only one city left, my opponent was mobilizing his entire army to surround me to show how defeated I were.
But, I'd managed to sneak out 2 units with forest camouflage. As his army was massing, they traveled across the map, and as he was almost ready to destroy me, I assaulted his capital, with only his main character hiding behind the walls left. Thankfully I had climbing, and managed to take him out, winning the game (AoW1 had main char loss be defeat)... my opponent was less impressed.
I've loved the complexity of abilities, and unit limit's importance on good units, as opposed to HoMM's numbers game.
I might have to pick up AoW4 at some point
It's probably the best Fantasy 4X I've seen. Having a blast with it. Nice review.

Thanks for the review. The only other game I’ve played like this was Civ 6. And my only complaint about that game was the late game turns took forever and felt very unrewarding. I still haven’t heard how this game ends or how the late turns play out.

AoW3 was one of my favorite games. Enjoyed it much more than Civ. Graphics seems like a minor point to me. Looking forward to this
