  • In this video we'll take a look at the new Pedal Loud fleet member the 1990 Porsche 944 S2. I talk through the rationale behind buying. A bit more about the story behind my original 944 and why I chose to buy this one now. More videos on the 944 will be coming soon including all the things wrong with this one, the history of the 944, a closer look at what's its really like and all the little jobs I'll be doing to make it even better.
    Thanks for watching.

      It looks and runs great and people love it at car shows. It is a real blast to drive.

    Do you know what, it is so good to see these cars finally getting the respect they deserve. These cars saved Porsche from financial ruin back in the 80s. Their handling and driving feel are phenomenal, buid quality was top drawer and they look amazing even today. You're going to enjoy that S2 👍👍

    Wonderful car. I have owned a black turbo for 19 years and it definitely gets under your skin. The 944 dynamics are phenomenal and they are so naturally balanced. I had the option to buy a 911 back when I purchased the turbo, but I always felt the 944 was a better car. I also feel that they are absolutely stunning to look at. Good luck and welcome back to a great car.

    Fantastic video! My dad’s owned the same all-original Red (with black interior) 944 S2 twice now haha. First in 2002 and then 2012 and owned ever since. Love the S2 👌🏻

      Oh wow! Nice, I like when things like that happen. My Dad had a 968 back in the day, we drove to Le Mans in it in 2004 and a few other Porsche meets. He's now longer with us but a few years back I tracked down the last car he owned (a 996 cab) and bought it. I owned it a for while (vids on the channel) but in truth it was a bit of a nail so it had to go.

      @danielferraro59 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea i have to say, i am really enjoying the 986 i really am, it’s just a torquey nippy round the town type car , lots of low down torque so makes short journeys around town very pleasurable and a total different experience to my 944 turbo. just makes me wish i bought a 986 years ago! the flat six sound ever since i put in a k&n air pannel filter and remooved the snorkel is absolutely gorgeous! something the 944 doesn’t have unfortunately.
      but and it’s a big but, the 944 is my absolute favourite car and i have no problems driving it in the winter iether as you, i believe cars are made to be driven otherwise what’s the point! i never was a poser just a pure driver and love the older stuff.
      the nice thing about the 986 is it had some really unusual extras and just fell in love with the look of it . it had red not the cherry red but red leather with all the porsche silver extra interia bits . it has the full aero kit and the colour is just fantastic . it’s a beutiful blue that goes into different tones in different lights.
      my 944 turbo is guards red with original big winged half cream leather and cream pinstripe velor i just love the comfort of it. the boxter full leather seats are the top spec for that year but not a touch on the 945 recaros!! you really know your in something my speacial when you get in the 944 turbo. it still smells old too 😁 it’s fairly heavily modified engine wise now and still going, as i just didn’t want to have my all time favourite car being slower than the modern day hatches 😁 i wanted it to be my ultimate favourite so i took the plung on the slippery slope and i can tell you, i could have bought a few more 944s for the money i’ve spent on the mods and as with all old cars, it never seems to stop 😂
      havnt drive it drive the 944 fir nearly 2 and half years and i’m missing it immensely now!!

    I've come back to a lovely old 1982 924 added to the fleet after foolishly selling it 5 years ago. A few simple mods and it really does drive well, bags of character and amazing build quality.

      @@damos_cars the Capri, I would describe as charming and charismatic these days, having said that, it's so very easy to 'sort' them as they are very much a slightly larger Escort. A 2.0 with updated brakes, stiffer springs, Weber and exhaust feels like a proper old school hooligan.

    The Porsche 924 was very much a VW, the 944 was not so much a VW. Porsche knew that the VW issues were issues and reworked the 944 to make it very much a Porsche. There was very little about the 944 that was influenced or narrowed from VW. I have always wanted a 944 S2 - As a kid this was one of my favorite cars.

    I wish I had one. I bought a 1988 2.5 off of eBay in 2012. But the guy hid the paint damage in the sun’s reflection in the photos. I couldn’t drive it that way and walked away. I checked an old photo I saved from it. It was off the road 2 years later. Lucky escape.
    I remember these cars for £3k to £4K in early 2000s. Sadly I didn’t need a car that much so didn’t get one then. Too expensive for me now for what they are. Any I have an M3 like you used to have for nearly 2 years. Can’t ever see me selling it!

    • @damos_cars
      @damos_cars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Yeh the reversing camera sure comes in handy. The performance is ok. It won't set the world on fire. It's very progressive and controllable thanks to long throttle pedal travel. It won't tear your face off though and doesn't really have the best soundtrack. What it does have though, is superb drivability. This car pivots around you and handles really well. Especially if the suspension has been freshened up. Good luck with the search. Let us know how you get on.

    I’m over here “on the other side of the pond”, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that 944s2 emblem on the hatch…..and I always check out other 944s. Also, I have that “linen” colored interior in my 1990 Baltic Blue S2 Cabriolet. Truth be told I would have to admit, I’d prefer a darker color for a leather interior, but it is absolutely striking against your black paintwork. And regarding the ‘911 driver hate for the 924/944/968’? These cars arguably saved Porsche’s financial ass, and I don’t care what they say, that near 50-50 weight ratio can’t be beat in handling curves! Finally….buying one to “fill up a hole in your garage”….you made me laugh! Hmmmmmm…..I wonder? I haven’t tried that excuse with my wife….maybe I’ll give it a try! I think you may find that the steering wheel IS adjustable: check the hidden, underside of the wheel above the knee bolster for a lever you can pull towards you to unlock the wheel. Adjust it, then lock the lever back in place. Don't know about UK-spec 944s, which may be different than my US-spec '88 NA (e.g. several youtubers have called the "sunroof" an option in the UK, but I believe all US-spec cars had these). Hope this works for folks over there--or, anywhere. Probably LOTS of folks don't know about this feature because that lever is quite hidden.

    Great cars. My first Porsche was a 1990 944 Turbo I bought in the late 90's. It was one of the later 250bhp models which the previous owner had modded a bit so was putting out close to 300bhp and had the M030 suspension option so handled great too. Horrendous turbo lag it has to be said. I foolishly traded it in for an '89 911 3.2 Carerra after having a brief drive in a 3.2 Carerra CS model. My 911 was reliable but nothing like as quick as either my turbo or the CS I tried. Replaced it with a 996 GT3 which was a fantastic car though.

I even went back to PCGB and as a result fitted Yokohama AVS tyres which helped a little. Think we need a special club for people that owned Porsches in the 80s n 90s the first time around.... I also think we are mostly better drivers as those old cars were just you and the car!! no traction and stability etc etc. I went in a 3.3 Turbo 911.....1 sec lack of concentration and it was going to kill you if you were driving fast. Also 80s Porsche are all hand built and will outlast modern stuff..and do so!

    Question for everyone, I had an ‘89 S2, I sold it partly to get a 911 but also because the clutch’s bite point was so high in the pedal travel it made heel/toeing very cumbersome. My local independent could not get it to bite lower down in the pedal travel. He took clutch and fly wheel apart, said they were good and that that was just where the bite point was. Do all 944s bite high in the pedal travel? Ideally I would like a clutch that bites mid-travel. I would love to get another S2, but not if the clutch is annoyingly high. Thanks for your input.

    • @damos_cars
      @damos_cars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clutch pedal travel has always been high for me. The travel in this old 944 seems even higher. I don't mind it that much though. The accelerator pedal travel is even longer but then I quite like that as it makes it easier to drive smoothly.

    Beautiful car. I’m looking at an S2 or a Turbo. Having owned both, which one did you like more?

    • @damos_cars
      @damos_cars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. I like both. Would probably lean more toward the turbo as they’re generally better spec’d so more likely to have sports seats, air con and 10 speaker sound. The price of turbos have really taken off though so from a pure value for money point of view I prefer the S2. You get 80% of the turbo thrills but for 50% of the price.

    • @dylanriley2707
      @dylanriley2707 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go S2, you get essentially turbo power without lag and reliability issues. Though if you went turbo, you could more easily add power for cheaper.

      @@dylanriley2707 Great points, thanks for that. I think I’m going to try and find a turbo just for the ability to add power more easily/cheaply. A 944 with a swap also sounds interesting lol but I’m sure the build would be a money pit.

    Sound is really off on this video, moving on, nice car though, glad your able to enjoy it.
    When I first started my affair with the 944 cars there was not much interest in the cars and you could buy a running driving N/A car for a thousand bucks or so. I bought two at one time, an auto N/A car and a Turbo car for fifteen hundred dollars. Now they are all the rage with late comers shouting the qualities of the car and many who run on about what the car requires to be acceptable. LOL
