  • I install a new piece of carbon fibre on my MK3 Ford Focus RS!
Specifically, it is the Cobb Redline Carbon Fiber Air Scoop!
A really beautiful mod to be installing, this is made from one single piece of 2x2 twill carbon that is of the highest quality. True motorsport grade materials and manufacturing process combined with well thought out engineering makes for a truly worthy upgrade for the Ford Focus RS!
The nature of the top quality carbon means that this is a super strong part but is also extremely light weight. This has the main benefit of allowing the re-use of factory mounting hardware in place of the factory mouth/scoop/opening as opposed to having to introduce new mounting hardware like nuts and bolts the way that the main competition does (the Velossa Tech Big Mouth which is 3D printed plastic). This makes for a simpler, quicker and easier install!
The benefit of adding an air scoop like this carbon example from Cobb is directing nice cold air directly into the air box to be used by the intake. The factory opening that exists here shows that the Ford engineers saw an opportunity for a cold air feed to be beneficial - on the other side it splits into two cold air feeds into the air box, one in the front and one in the bottom/side to give maximum coverage to the air filter. The downside is in the execution as the stock opening opens into a closed off cavity of the front bumper so the air being drawn in is essentially ambient air that isn't particularly cold.
The air scoop changed this in two ways. One is that, as the name of the mod suggests, it is scooping air as you drive along. So as you drive, it picks up air and this is forced/pushed into the air duct and into the air box rather than being drawn in, making it easier for the intake to access the cold air. Cold air being the second area of improvement - the opening is now open to actual cold air as opposed to the closed off cavity of the bumper!
The installation process is relatively simple. It is done with the front bumper removed - a process that is not hard once you know where all the screws and clips are located. I don't cover this process in this video but you can watch my intercooler install video if you need to see the detailed step by step bumper work here:

The actual removal and install of the air scoop items is super easy and quick. The main area of difficulty / work that needs to be done is cutting a hole in the plastic shroud that the scoop need to pass through. Cobb have a cutting template for the MK3 Ford Focus ST but not one for the Focus RS. As you will see, this is a shame because I try to use the ST version but find that it is quite different to what is needed for the Focus RS so in the end I had to remove a bunch of extra material - I can see why the Velossa Tech Big Mouth install instructions just say to fully cut the whole section of shroud out! I wanted to keep the shroud in one piece though if possible, which I did still achieve after a lot of trial and error with the Dremel!
Other than that, the process was grand, and out the end I am happy with the results!
It is going to perform well and it does look super cool, albeit more stealth than the Velossa Tech -the Big Mouth has a colourful surround where the Cobb carbon air scoop is just carbon all the way which is of course black behind a black grille in a dark area - but I like the stealth look so all good with me!
Cobb say about the Redline Carbon Fiber Air Scoop:
Increase airflow to the intake of your Focus ST or RS with the COBB Redline Carbon Fiber Air Scoop! This piece channels air from the large grille opening directly into the factory snorkel feeding the stock airbox. Not only will this piece benefit the stock intake, but since both the COBB Cold Air Intake, and the COBB Redline Carbon Fiber Intake both use the lower portion of the stock airbox, it works great with those too!
An increased amount of cooler airflow is key in making the most efficient power out of your Focus ST or RS! Pulling in fresh air from the grill ensures that air entering into the intake system is as close to ambient as possible.

Nice to see one made in carbon vs the 3d printed ones. Real carbon is always stunning to look at 👌. I wish some more of the Cobb/U.S products suited the Euro built Fiesta ST.

I always follow you, why don't you make a video where you show only the best essential modifications you have made and tested, which really improved the car?

What happens when your driving against heavy rain can water go up and into the air box

Not likely, the distance it would have to travel against gravity is too far to worry about unless the rain is being blown by a hurricane or something

@@AdamRaineyTo be sure just avoid driving to close behind other cars in the spray, there are stories of engine damage with big snorkel like intakes.
