15:50 if you look closely, Big Ben is covered in scaffolding because it’s still being fixed from when the Slitheen spaceship crashed into it in series 1
Hardly anybody notices which human does the most to save the world: Jackie. She brings the tea that revives the Doctor. She lends him Howard's nightclothes, with the satsuma that defeats the Sycorax. Good job!
25:10 "Don't you think she looks tired" This is a very niche reference to a particular event in British history so it can go over a lot of viewer's heads. Margaret Thatcher, the first female British Prime Minister was very unpopular (to be polite!) When she was in the role. What eventually took her down was an aide of hers saying those exact words, not realising his mic was on. It led to speculation she was unfit to lead and eventually she was challenged for the role of leadership and lost the vote.
For Americans, (like me) she led from 1979-1990, so part of Carter’s term, all of Reagan’s 2, and slightly after. She was very arguably worse than Reagan. They both blatantly ignored the AIDS epidemic, and their financial policies hurt far too many people. They were supported by the wealthy in both cases. I know people don’t like to talk politics, but Doctor Who is a very left leaning show, so we’ll get these obvious opinions. 🤷♀️
I always liked a line that's coming up that basically says when The Doctor is running away from you, he's doing you a kindness. You don't want him coming for you.
This episode genuinely shows how great of an actor David Tennant is. An episode following the regeneration is the first real look at the new Doctor, and gives them an entire episode to convince the audience to stay. In the classics, youd get a 4-6 part story for the new doctor to establish themselves. Full episode in the modern series. David only gets that short stint on the Sycorax ship, stays in bed for most of his screentime, and he chews up the scenery the moment he gets the chance. Bro managed in 5 minutes what takes 1-4 episodes for any other doctor to pull off.
The "Don't you think she looks tired?" phrase was actually the same phrase used in real life to refer to Margaret Thatcher at the end of her time as Prime Minister. The 'health concerns' rumours.
Ironically, one reason for Christopher Eccleston's falling out with the Doctor Who production team was that they said he'd left the role was because he was "tired". Chris is adamant that this was simply not true.
@@ftumschk I've also seen some people who are absolutely certain that "Don't you think she looks tired" is a reference to the BBC releasing that supposed "quote"
Easter egg I love in this episode is the Doctor references Arthur Dent as if he met him. This suggests this universe is part of the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy universe by Douglas Adams.
@@obiwankenobi687 I mean, the way it's said at least implies Arthur Dent is a real person. Unclear if that means the whole Hitchhiker's universe is the same universe as the one in Doctor Who, or if Arthur just went on somewhat similar adventures and Douglas Adams based his book on Arthur's account of his adventures. Heck, he could've even have been an unseen past companion and maybe Ford or someone could be loosely based on a second-hand account of the Doctor. If I remember right Adams did write for Doctor Who in the past so it doesn't feel entirely outside the realms of possibility
To answer your early question, remember Rose was missing for 12 months, so this would be the second Christmas she was gone but the first one where they knew where she was.
Each regeneration of the Doctor is the same but different. His strongest character traits of compassion, intelligence, curiosity, determination, all of that will remain intact. But other things can change quite a bit. He could be scatterbrained, humorous, or deadly serious most of the time.
I think Rose's speech to the Sycorax was just something that she made up on the spot, using words or phrases she remembered from her travels with the Doctor. Her reference to Article 15 of the Shadow Proclamation was from the very first episode, Rose, when the Doctor is addressing the Nestene Consciousness. Raxicoricofalipritorious was the planet where the Slitheen family was from.
Shooting the Sycorax ship was an allusion to the sinking of Argentine 'Belgrano' during the Falklands war. Heading away from the islands but allegedly turning around.
"Who's clothes are these?" - First, that was an unintentional pun, because yes, they are Doctor Who's clothes. But the Doctor and his companions travel to many planets and many different time periods, so they need a big wardrobe to handle any contingency. The control room you enter from the front door, which we see most of the time, is bigger on the inside than the blue police box. But the rest of the TARDIS that we sometimes see, like this episode, is MUCH bigger than that. There are also bedrooms, bathrooms, a library, and many other parts. We only get to see the other parts of the ship when necessary for plot reasons, but they are there.
A few references to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in this special. Cup of tea, "anything else he's got two of?", Arthur Dent name drop... The creator of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams, was a writer and script editor (which was more or less the showrunner credit at the time) for Doctor Who for a period during the fourth Doctor's run.
The Hitchhiker's Guide movie was earlier that year! It's fun they got that reference in since I don't remember it being in the book or the tv show. Maybe it was in the radio show.
@@ninjabluefyre3815 I think it was in the radio show or TV show. I'm almost positive it was in something prior to the movie. I don't think it was the book, but I might be wrong.
Before this episode Doctor Who hadn't had a episode transmitted on Christmas for forty years. The Daleks' Master Plan episode 7 the Feast of Steven transmitted 25 of December 1965.
"No second chances. That's the kind of man i am" and as i recall 10 does keept to that pretty well. He'll give anyone a chance to repent or show remorse and change but they only get the one

Torchwood (bit of a spoiler) will become known to you by the end of Season 2. It is also when the Torchwood series begins, if you are going to tie it into Doctor Who. While the 2 shows are exclusive (dont relate to each other story wise) they do share a timeline.
It was also a codeword used on labels on video recordings of the new Doctor Who episodes when they were passed around to reduce the possibility of someone getting their hands on one before it was aired. There is a lot of secrecy in Doctor Who about new companions or the return of major past characters so anagrams were often used when cast lists were produced for publication in the Radio Times etc. One character auditioning for Doctor Who was apparently told to say she was here for a new show called "Panic Moon" - an anagram of "Companion".
Yes, the Christmas specials are a regular thing for Doctor Who, at least since the 2005 relaunch. They definitely vary in quality, this was probably my favorite of the ones when David Tennant was the Tenth Doctor.

What he said about Harriet Jones was in an attempt to discredit her, start turning her staff and the people against her, possibly urging her to resign. Great reaction, though! Love your videos, and great to see you doing Doctor Who
As much as I like "Deep Breath" and "Robot" and love "The 11th Hour", this is still my favorite "first" episode of a new Doctor. Tennant (like Smith) completely sold me on his Doctor in a relatively short time. Also not sure if its intentional, but I think 10's outfit for most of the episode of pjs under a bath robe is reminiscent of the 4th Doctor wearing pjs underneath the 3rd Doctor's jacket in Robot
Christmas specials are a huge thing in the UK, all the most popular shows will do one. Getting your Christmas special shown on Christmas Day is the ultimate achievement.
The Doctor deposing Harriet Jones at the end draws some debate among fans about whether he was justified. My guess is that it's meant to be an ambiguous moment. In the episode, it comes right after "No second chances. I'm that sort of a man." We're happy about that with the Sycorax leader, but then right away he doesn't give Harriet Jones a second chance either, and we're not so sure. The Doctor's more complex (and thus more interesting) than just a hero in a white hat, there's also a darkness there that we sometimes glimpse.

Congrats on reaching 50K. Glad you enjoyed the episode. Note with Sycorax the name comes from Shakespeare… (remember that 😉) Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones) has a great career, probably best known as Cousin Isabelle on Downton Abbey, Daniel Evans who played Daniel Llewellyn is an accomplished musical theatre actor too. I’ve seen him on Broadway in the revival of Sunday in the Park with George. This would have been the year before I think. Adam Garcia also has a fun role in “Coyote Ugly,” and a long resume. He plays the right-hand man, Alex. Sally (Anita Breim,) is Jane Seymour on the Tudors. A lot of nuWho locations are in Cardiff, Wales. “Boom Town” has locations that are right on the water that will also feature later, 🤫. I think the apartment buildings they’re climbing up are pretty close. There used to be a Museum there that housed a lot of costumes, props, 9/10’s TARDIS set, and other cool stuff, but it’s closed sadly. I think the parking lot where Rose spots the prominent “Bad Wolf” is there too. I’ve been to Roald Dahl Plass, and the Museum. 🥰 I also ate in the restaurant in Boom Town. David went to drama school- would have learned sword then. 😊 I always considered the Shadow Proclamation to be part high council of the Jedi and part bumbling Senate. If you want to, look back at past Doctor’s costumes and play spot the easter egg in the closet scene. We’re meant to recognize at least several prominent accessories, depending on how good your eye is. David grew up quite the Whovian, so I bet filming that scene was brilliant.
When speaking to the Nestene Consciousness in "Rose", the Doctor invoked Convention 15 of the Shadow Proclamation, which is an authoritative framework that carries weight with certain species. Just what the Shadow Proclamation is, and who is behind it, has not been revealed at this point.
Yeah, the Christmas specials are a big deal. I remember watching at least a couple DVD extras where the Christmas special was shown in a large auditorium in front of an audience of families, with live appearances by The Doctor, companions, maybe some villains which you haven’t yet seen.
I've seen some reactions by Emme before this but I was unsure what I was going to think about Doctor Who reactions. Turns out I'm really enjoying it. The football reference with "I don't know why I did that - I know nothing about football" had me giggling. I feel the same way.
David Tennant is an amazing Doctor. Loved his run and still consider him one of the best. My favorite Doctor comes later, but the 10th Doctor will forever be iconic 😌
"So what does this button just outside the door do?" "It collapses that small area of floor over there!" "Why?" *shrugs* "Well I'm sure it'll be fine. It's not like the commander is gonna run over it when someone presses the button, is it?
When the time comes you might want to watch the spin-off series set in the Whoniverse - Torchwood (a more adult show, you'll learn what Torchwood is later) and The Sarah Jane Adventures (for younger children but still great fun)
The "Don't you think she looks tired" bit is a British media idiom. The rules of the British Parliament don't allow MP's to say certain things to each other, one of which is accusing each other of being drunk. The standard euphemism is "tired," or possibly "tired and emotional" or "tired and overwrought," which has also spread to the media when talking about political figures. So the Doctor is suggesting that she looks drunk (which she kind of does in her reaction).
Thanks Emme fantastic reaction . Great news there’s a Christmas special almost every year and some of them really are special too. Have a lovely weekend 😃
I'm fairly new to your channel and I love it so much! Congrats on the 50K! You have earned it! My favorite Doctor of all time is the Tenth and I'm so happy you're here. Enjoy the wonder of funny and hot David Tennant!
Just subscribed, I watched a few of your Doctor Who reactions and really enjoyed them. Yeah that's the TARDIS wardrobe some of the clothes are the Doctor's some belong to past companions.
Congratulations on 50k! The first few Christmas Specials are basically just normal episodes, set at Christmas, with a little bit of Christmas iconography thrown in. There are better ones to come that embrace the Christmas spirit better, but this one is probably the best one of the Tennant era.
Thank you, Emme! ⏳ I remember this one. Yes, holiday specials are a thing with BBC stuff. The DOCTOR WHO ones are joyous... so, let it tap into that part of your mind that appreciates jingle bells. ☃
A few British TV shows do Christmas specials. A fun way to wind down after a long Christmas lunch. Doctor Who did them from 2005 to 2017, and started again last year, so you have a few to look forward to. The TARDIS has a big wardrobe with all sorts of clothes. In the classic series the companions would get period-appropriate outfits from it. This doesn't happen much in the revival, although Rose did get a Victorian dress in the episode with Charles Dickens. The wardrobe in this episode also has a set of Harry Potter robes as David Tennant had recently appeared in The Goblet of Fire.
This is a fun one. Glad you're enjoying it. David Tennant rules! Although, I must say, Christopher Eccleston had some good episodes, and a cool accent. You'll have to specifically check the watch order to find out what special episodes (Christmas or otherwise) go in between the seasons.
each year, as I get together my christmas tree, I just get Jackie's word in my head of "Im gonna get killed by a christmas tree!" and it never fails to make me laugh
Emme is unfamiliar with parliamentary politics, and how it is ruled by rumor and innuendo. "Don't you think she looks tired" is a meme, a thought contagion which will spread from member to member, resulting in an erosion of confidence in the Prime Minister.
Loving watching someone new fall in love with DW. As you must be thundering through Series 2 now (very broke so no Patreon for me sadly), you must be noticing Torchwood pop up. The first series of the spinoff Torchwood, aired just after Series 2. It's not essential viewing by any means, but I think you might get something out of watching it... There are more spinoffs but let's not spoil those yet. 😜
FWIW, the chance of neither Rose, Jackie, nor Mickey being affected by the phenomenon affecting ⅓ of the world if each was calculated independently (i.e. not related to blood type or any other dependent variable) is about 30%. It's the equivalent of the chance of throwing three six-sided dice (3d6) and having none of them be a 5 or 6.
David really is my Doctor. He's really able to cover a lot of the emotional range that I want from The Doctor. Eccleston was good, but Tennant is... so much better. I know you're going to enjoy the next few seasons!
I can only assume that people affected by the Sycorax were not restrained for the same reason that one is not to disturb a sleepwalker. Perhaps that is what the others were thinking.
“Don’t you think she looks tired” = “Don’t you think she should have her health looked into, just in case she’s unfit to keep being active?” Which then spirals out into rumors that she IS unfit.
There is indeed a Christams Special every years. Im not British but it seems since its revival in 2005 it became sort of a British tradition to sit down and watch the Doctor Who special that aired on Christmas day. Truthfully i used to actually pirate the episodes and watch them late on Christmas too, since i couldnt get the BBC anyother way back then. They also all take place on Christmas and are Christmas theamed ofcourse.
While its later retconed the ciruit curentky isnreferencing old docter who lore basicly to use the tardis timlords had some artificial organ inolanted that kets them bond with it it also causes the regeneration process
This is technically the second christmas episode of New Who since the episode with Charles Dickens was also set at christmas. Also The Doctor's reaction to Harriet's reasoning is a little elitist in a way cause she is right like The Doctor isnt always around so the planet needs to defend themselves against alien threats and be capable of doing so in the absence of Doctor. Its almost like The Doctor doesnt want the human race defending themselves without him or perhaps to find a better way but as we've seen with the Doctor he offers the chance to leave before having to stop them and i suppose thats the difference. The Doctor also robs the country of the golden age the 9th Doctor talked about in the slitheen two parter

Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones) has a great career, probably best known as Cousin Isabelle on Downton Abbey, Daniel Evans who played Daniel Llewellyn is an accomplished musical theatre actor too.
I always considered the Shadow Proclamation to be part high council of the Jedi and part bumbling Senate.
Congrats on 50k subs Eme!!!
Thank you!!
Well done on the 50k the elfs union thanks you
I've seen some reactions by Emme before this but I was unsure what I was going to think about Doctor Who reactions.
"So what does this button just outside the door do?"
"It collapses that small area of floor over there!"
"Why?"
*shrugs*
"Well I'm sure it'll be fine.
It’s 100% a thing for Doctor Who to have a Christmas special. Most seasons will have one. It’s usually considered to be an episode 0 for that season
Yes, the "Christmas Special" is a thing in Dr Who
All right everyone, this season's drinking game starts now!
How cool was that scene with the Tardis opening 😊 no one knew this was going to be so great. New Who rocks 😅
I'm fairly new to your channel and I love it so much! Congrats on the 50K! You have earned it! My favorite Doctor of all time is the Tenth and I'm so happy you're here. Enjoy the wonder of funny and hot David Tennant!
Merry May Christmas!
Just subscribed, I watched a few of your Doctor Who reactions and really enjoyed them.
Yeah that's the TARDIS wardrobe some of the clothes are the Doctor's some belong to past companions.
I'm A+ I would be out of commission in this story tell the doctor saved all of us
Congratulations on 50k!
"Whose clothes ate these?" Funny that you should ask - there are Classic Companions costumes from storage hanging on those rails.😂
RIP Mr Llewellyn and Harriet Jones' career.
@emme reacts
The Christmas Special in the Series are allwas a transion from one season to the next season. Some are count as episode 0 of a season.
" don't you think she looks tired" has been the end of a lot of ladies in important positions over the years
Emme is unfamiliar with parliamentary politics, and how it is ruled by rumor and innuendo. "Don't you think she looks tired" is a meme, a thought contagion which will spread from member to member, resulting in an erosion of confidence in the Prime Minister.
Basically like the whole "doesn't Biden look too old for this" thing
@@Maswartz226 pause
did his elves unionise lol
Great reaction, also love your dog - Is it a Whippet? - I watch Dr Who with mine too LOL
She’s a jack russel beagle mix!!
My guess is had they tried to restrain the hypnotized they would've fought back violently.
And this is where Torchwood could be started at season 1 until its end and continue where the next DW season ends.
26:20 - the right six words to the right person in the right situation, have changed her world.
The 3rd, 4th & 5th Doctors all had sword fights. 7 also kinda had a bit of a thing with his umbrella.
Perhaps that is what the others were thinking.
vote of no confidence would have been alarming back then... These days the UK government is almost expected to have one per prime minister!
“Don’t you think she looks tired” = “Don’t you think she should have her health looked into, just in case she’s unfit to keep being active?”
Which then spirals out into rumors that she IS unfit.
Thank you ❤
There’s a Xmas episode every szn basically
If a baby had A+ blood would it just try to crawl up to the roof???
and so begins the doctor's "oh what's this? better put it in my mouth to find out" era
and TorchWood is all the same letters as Doctor Who in a diferent order.
I heckin' love Jackie she's definitely the best part of Rose's companionship XD
I swear my dog looks so much like yours. She's asleep on my bed while I watch lol
