@@emme So it's been a couple months since Firefly ended and we've been wondering... are we ever getting a Serenity movie reaction? Please say yes Emme.
What I love about this is that Tennant is a Scotsman from the west coast playing a time lord who has an English accent but is using a fake Scottish accent, and it is a fake accent it's not his actual west coast Scottish accent but has been given a Highland lilt to it rather than the more harsh and guttural west coast sound. He could so easily have just used his own accent for this episode, but he instead went that extra mile, giving us a Scotsman doing a fake Scottish accent. Genius!
Others have already pointed out that David Tennant is from Scotland* - but it's really impressive how he manages to switch between his own Scottish accent (and an exaggerated version of it) and the Doctor's English accent, without skipping a beat.
"I'm Doctor James McCrimmon." Freaking heck, I miss Jamie... Just to point out, the name that he chooses is actually his companion in Classic Era~ I wouldn't tell you which incarnation, cause it makes that more interesting (but I'm sure that Patreon or TH-cam commenters might have told you which one, cause apparently spoilers is not a thing when it comes to Classic Era I guess...)
Fun fact: The actress playing Queen Victoria had appeared In a six-part Classic Who story back in 1967, and had the option to continue on the show as another companion of the Doctor. But she declined he offer, became primarily a movie actress and over 20 years later was nominated for an Oscar.
"Tim'rous beastie" is from the Scottish poet Robert Burns' poem "To a Mouse". Used by many people when they're trying to do a Scottish accent comedically.
"I won't rest until I put that thing's hide upon my wall"!! Couple seconds later, "ahhhh ahhhhhhhhh" as he's being torn apart. Welcome to Doctor Who folks, family-friendly sci-fi. And yes, you should definitely check out Torchwood, one because it stars a certain favorite character of yours and two it's a bit more serous and grounded than Doctor Who (almost too edgy for its own good to be honest but when it's at its best it is some of the best sci-fi drama ever produced). It's also best viewed alongside David Tennants run as the Doctor, during his 3rd season since there's a little crossover between the shows during that era.
It’s not Doctor Who if The Doctor isn’t getting up to some shenanigans with historic British monarchs. Can’t wait for next episode, has one of my favorite Companions in it! 🙂
This is one of my fav eps of doc who as a guilty pleasure… its not ground breaking but for me its one that perfectly exemplifies a monster of the week with my fav doctor set in my country at my fav time period haha
U might know that munk guy cause he was in game of thrones he tried to steal the dragons as a baby, David Tennant Scottish accent is good cause he is actually Scottish lol 😂
As many have told you, David Tennant is Scottish. However, his own Scottish accent isn't quite what he used in this show. Here he used an exaggerated stereotypical Scottish accent, more like an Edinburgh accent in this episode. (Scotland has multiple accents). David's own Scottish accent is from the west coast, similar to Glasgow as he grew up in Paisley, a town south of Glasgow. (Accents in the UK can vary even within a city and also vary by social class.) However, if you watch David in interviews, his accent has become quite light, probably because he's lived in London for many years and his wife is English. If you watch his early work (like Takin' Over the Asylum his first major role filmed when he was only 22) his own accent was heavier then. He doesn't get to use a Scottish accent very often depending on the project. For Doctor Who David was told to do an Estuary English (south English London area accent) as Christopher Eccelston had used his own Mancunian (north English, Manchester) accent and Russell T. Davies didn't want it to be a "tour of the regions". I wish David had been able to use his own Scottish accent as I prefer hearing the variation of regional British accents and they make things more interesting.
Right! Getting a bit annoyed with all the comments saying it's his "actual accent", or "natural accent", when there's a difference to what it actually sounds like haha.
This is the origin of the Torchwood mystery that would circulate all of Series 2, if you are going to watch Torchwood (which you should as Doctor Who does do a crossover with it) just consider that it’s very much an adult show and that it takes place during series 3 of Doctor Who
Owing to crossovers and potential spoilers, if you do decide to watch Torchwood, it's best to go with the following order: Doctor Who series 2 (many fans use 'season' for the 20th century run, and 'series' for the modern era) Torchwood season 1 Doctor Who series 3 Torchwood season 2 Doctor Who series 4 Torchwood season 3 Doctor Who 2009 specials Season 4 of Torchwood came out the same year as series 6 of Doctor Who, but I don't remember any connection between them, so it doesn't matter so much how you watch them in relation to each other.
Rose and the doctor here are just pure chaos gremlins and I love them. David Tennant is a gem with Billie Piper their chemistry is insane. Also Love your t-shirt.
So glad you are still invested!!! David is THE MAN!!!! (I'm sure the Patreon folks have told you by now that this is the episode where David got to use his *real* accent.) THANKS for this, Emme!!!
I loved Torchwood I definitely recommend you watch it. It has the same vibe as Doctor Who with just as many interesting stories. Each member of the Team is unique and offers a lot to each story in heartbreaking ways.
Torchwood should be watched at same time as Doctor who Season 3 episode 1-10 Torchwood season 2 should be watched at same time as Doctor who season 4 episode 0-11 Torchwood season 3 should be watched when you want to be traumatised by the best scifi put to television Torchwood is an adult show, that jumps between edgy to genuinely dark and difficult then finds it’s tone and is great. Not enough reactors do torchwood and it enhances the doc who experience imo!!! So would be great to see you react :)
As I’m sure literally everybody has mentioned; yes! Please do watch Torchwood! The first season released in tandem with Doctor Who season three so start it there I love Torchwood so so much and I hope you do too :)
Yes, that is David Tennant's real Scottish accent. The reason he plays the Doctor with an English accent is because he used that exact same accent in "Casanova" where he first met Russell T. Davies.
You might recognise some of these people if you've seen Game of Thrones. There's Ron Donachie, who played the Winterfell Master at Arms, Ser Rodrik Cassel; there's Jamie Sives, who played Rodrik's son and Nerd Stark's right hand man Jory Cassel; and there's Ian Hanmore, who played the Warlock Pyat Pree when Dany went to Qarth. You only need to look at the recent portait of King Charles to see a certain . . . connection . . . with blood. Amazing they put it out there so openly. You're a Doctor Who industry Emme, these reactions are great fun.
You should give Torchwood a go Emme, but check when to watch it as it fits in between later Doctor Who episodes. It's more adult than Doctor Who but there's another spin-off called the Sarah Jane Adventures which is for younger viewers but is still fun.
Eve Myles (who played the maid in The Unquiet Dead) and John Barrowman (who played Captain Jack Harkness) are in Torchwood. I think that Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures are both worthy of a look. There are some really good stories in both of them as well as some really creepy ones. (and some that are just okay).
Torchwood is one of five Doctor Who TV spin offs: K9 and Company 1981 (which is connected to the next episode School Reunion) Torchwood 2006-2011 The Sarah Jane Adventures 2007-2011 K9 2009-2010 Class 2016
Thanks, Emme! ⏳ Since *Torchwood* *Institute* was founded in this episode, you really must was the series TORCHWOOD (2006 through 2011) in conjunction with DOCTOR WHO! You'll see someone you'll be very glad to see.
Funny thing is that Tennant's Scottish accent here is... fundamentally him dropping his English accent for the one he grew up with XD There's actually a really great video on TH-cam about him digging into his Scottish heritage, and finding where his family came from. Genuinely quite moving.
There’s 2 spin off shows for Doctor Who . Torchwood which is more adult oriented . I think it’s worth watching overall but can be a bit hit and miss with some episodes . If you’re going to watch it finish t his season of Doctor Who first before starting season 1 . The second spin off is the Sarah Jane Adventures the main character coming from classic Doctor Who . It’s really more a children’s show if you’re alright with that kind of level of sophistication but some people like me like to see all the tie ins.
On Torchwood, yeah it’s more “adult”, however I would qualify it with this, the first season is like a teen boys version of adult… or what they’d think is mature, sex and violence. It’s has some really awesome episodes and some good story arcs, but it’s kind of a mess as a whole. And others have rightly said that Doctor Who is more kid oriented, I wouldn’t say it’s a kid show, but it plays it more safe and aims to be a show they the whole family can enjoy. It did however start out as a kids show for sure, as that’s how it was even pitched to the BBC, that they could teach history to kids by having the Doctor visit different time periods, that idea eventually faded however as they started doing more emphasis on the fictional side of things and it transformed into what it still is basically today.
I personally really enjoyed Torchwood and would recommend it. You'll want to synchronize its air dates with Doctor Who's, though, to avoid any possibility of spoilers or confusion
If you're going to watch torchwood it takes place during the third season of doctor who so that's when you should start it, you run the risk of spoilers for doctor who if you start torchwood too early
You won't believe this but...Your Dog came in and went to the Right Side of your Chair. It stood up on it's hind legs and started Tap Dancing. There is a slight chance I made that up.🐕🐶
Torchwood series 1 takes place during season 3 of Doctor Who...it is very ... um adult themed stories...watcher beware. in fact Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor who...rearrange the letters and your get one from the other.
knighted and exiled on the same day you bad boy. lol remember this episode for later reference. this one started off strange when i first saw it. torchwood is born and yes it is a fun show to watch because it blends in to the episodes. meme you are awesome and stay that way.
I would say Torchwood is worth watching at some point but it’s definitely not necessary. There are some really good episodes and one season in particular is incredible.
It would be sooooo cool if you watched Torchwood. It was basically marketed as Doctor Who for adults and it's so wild. They crossover with the main show sometimes too. I'd watch S1 of Torchwood in between S2 and S3 of Doctor Who and S2 between S3/S4
If you don't know, "timorous beastie" is from a famous Scottish poem by Robert Burns, _To a Mouse._ _Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim’rous beastie,_ _O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!_
Torchwood is a good show, however, fair warning it does get “dark” and thus might not be for ’gentler hearts’. It also takes a few episodes to find its niche. There’s also some crossover in that you might want to plan to finish S1 of Torchwood before the later part of S3 of Dr. Who. Each Dr. Who spinoff is targeted at a different demographic. The main Dr Who show is designed to be “whole family” entertainment. Sarah Jane Adventures was targeted to younger audiences. Class was meant as YA. Torchwood was the prime time adult one (more violence, sex, swearing, blood & gore, psychological situations, etc., etc.)
I want to say, since everyone always comments this myth, as a Scottish person: while David Tennant is Scottish, that isn't actually his real accent. He does a more Morningside or possibly Highlands accent in this episode, while his real accent is Paisley. There's a video here showing the comparison: th-cam.com/video/6p9ONIaG39Y/w-d-xo.html It might be difficult for non-Scots to hear the difference, though. It's actually quite interesting, because the accent he uses in this episode is kind of exaggerated and a bit off, which I think might be intentional, since the Doctor is putting it on, after all. You might have recognised the monk leader as the warlock Pyat Pree from Game of Thrones.
You *need* to watch *Torchwood (2006 - 2011).* Doctor Who won't properly make sense without it. Start watching it after the Doctor Who Series 2 finale. Don't delay. There are episodes in Doctor Who Series 3 which are direct continuations of plots from Torchwood. You can watch it alongside Doctor Who Series 3. But make sure to stay about three episodes ahead with Torchwood. I'd suggest watching Torchwood Episodes 1 & 2 (they aired on the same night), then watching the next Doctor Who Christmas Special, then Torchwood Episode 3, then Doctor Who Series 3 Episode 1, then Torchwood Episode 4, and so forth. That way you should've completed Torchwood Series 1, before you reach Doctor Who Series 3 Episode 11. And that is absolutely crucial. Do that, and you shouldn't be spoiled. This is coming from a fan, it genuinely matters that you watch Torchwood Series 1 and Doctor Who Series 3 in that order.
"Torchwood" (the name of the place) is actually "Doctor Who"'s anagram. Also, it's the science lab which shot on the Sycorax ship on Christmas special, under Harriet Jones orders (for which the Doctor issues the 7 words to end her political career). Torchwood is also a spin-off series, starring Captain Jack, more intended for adults, which will tie-in to Doctor Who season 3 finale. Never liked Torchwood very much (except for season 3 which is AMAZING and very sad) so I wouldn't suggest you to watch it. The only thing you'll miss is the reason why a certain event occurs at the beginning of DW S3 finale, but you'll live nicely anyway. There are other cross-overs later in the show, both with Torchwood and Sarah Jane Chronicles (which is another spin-off more kids-oriented this time) and probably for those you would need at least to know who the characters are. Then again, if you wanna watch all 3 series I'm there for it 😁
I’d finish doctor who first before getting into torchwood the first few season are very touch and go, the children of earth and miracle day are very good seasons worth watching but they are so much darker than doctor who has ever been 😅
David Tennant was amazing as huyang in ahsoka as well although my favourite Scottish actor will always be Douglas henshall in primeval. America tried to make a spinoff of the show but was cancelled after one season just didn't work without Douglas henshall.
@@baz0348 the original is the one with i think Andrew Lee Potts as Conner and the other characters Abbey and Nick Cutter later season had Jess and Becker
@@lucariodash4874 yes it was a spinoff but Douglas henshall in the original as cutter was the best no other season or replacement could come close yes still watchable but without henshall just didn't work without him think he actually made the show and why ratings where so good first couple of seasons.
I knew what this comment section would be like. God, surely after the first 50 comments talking about Tennant's accent, you might think adding another one would be slightly redundant, no? I will never understand the internet...
I personally wouldbt bother with Torchwood or the other spinoff. However, it would help to at least watch the pilot episodes at the right time as they introduce things that will play back into Doctor Who
Small point, Albert (her husband) is dead, If Queen Victoria did get bitten and has a blood disease, it would not affect any of her MANY children, because they were already born. It would have died with her.
I like Torchwood but it's VERY adult and not as much fun as DOCTOR WHO> It doesn't (at least in my eyes) reach its potential until season 3. I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you're a real completionist.
It's funny watching these last 2 episodes praising their accents when this has been actually far closer to both their naturals since they both putting on fake accents most of the show. But also I guess that still goes to show how good they are they're faking so well all the time you doubt that's their real accent.
The 1st season of Torchwood should be watched in between this season and season 3 of Doctor Who. Season 2 of Torchwood should be watched between seasons 3 and 4 of Doctor Who. The rest of TW can be watched anytime after S4 of DW. It's not strictly necessary but if you want to do it right and not get spoilers for TW, that's how it's done.

Yes Torchwood. Also Sarah Jane chronicles. Both are doctor who spin offs.
Torchwood can get a bit darker than Dr. Who and it stars our old friend Captain Jack. P.S. Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.
Not only is the accent DT’s own, (😂😂) the specs are too. The Doctor however, doesn’t really need them as you’ll discover….
His Scottish accent is really good. Almost like he's speaking in his real voice!
To be fair, Tennant's English accent is really good. At first I also thought it was his real one.
Definitely watch Torchwood
3:56 haha that accent is his real accent lol. 🤣
Then again, if you wanna watch all 3 series I'm there for it 😁
Haha
The Canadian accent is definitely influenced by Scots.
Nova Scotia = new Scotland 🙂
I’d finish doctor who first before getting into torchwood the first few season are very touch and go, the children of earth and miracle day are very good seasons worth watching but they are so much darker than doctor who has ever been 😅
David Tennant was amazing as huyang in ahsoka as well although my favourite Scottish actor will always be Douglas henshall in primeval. America tried to make a spinoff of the show but was cancelled after one season just didn't work without Douglas henshall.
You seen PRIMEVAL, you seen Star Wars Ashoka.... dude your cool first time iv seen anyone on youtube in any comment mention PRIMEVAL
@@lucariodash4874 the original primeval was great the American spinoff is watchable but never as popular as the original BBC version.
@@baz0348 the original is the one with i think Andrew Lee Potts as Conner and the other characters Abbey and Nick Cutter later season had Jess and Becker
@@baz0348 the american version is Primeval New World isnt it ?? It was like some remake or reboot attempt ?? If im not mistaken ??
@@lucariodash4874 yes it was a spinoff but Douglas henshall in the original as cutter was the best no other season or replacement could come close yes still watchable but without henshall just didn't work without him think he actually made the show and why ratings where so good first couple of seasons.
i loved Torchwood, i do hope you give it a try in the future!
I knew what this comment section would be like. God, surely after the first 50 comments talking about Tennant's accent, you might think adding another one would be slightly redundant, no? I will never understand the internet...
Fun fact: Torchwood is an anagram for "Doctor Who"
Yes great reaction, yes Torchwood is definitely worth watching.
I personally wouldbt bother with Torchwood or the other spinoff. However, it would help to at least watch the pilot episodes at the right time as they introduce things that will play back into Doctor Who
Well his accent is really good because David Tennant is Scottish. 😂
Torchwood’s worth watching but it’s set after season 2 so definitely finish this season first
You should definitely watch the Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures spin-offs.
The IRL royals not long after this had a child under the full moon...
I wonder why Scottish actor David Tennant's scottish accent is so good?
I really enjoyed Torchwood, my vote is a yes to watching it
I think you would love Torchwood.
Small point, Albert (her husband) is dead, If Queen Victoria did get bitten and has a blood disease, it would not affect any of her MANY children, because they were already born. It would have died with her.
Unless of course she scratched or bit them during a full moon and passed on the "infection" that way.
Oot and aboot, as said by Rose, is neither Scottish nor Canadian ... oh, and that Tennant's real accent [he is Scottish]
Which persona game is it mentioned in? I’ve only played 3,4 and five only part of three playing the remake now
I’ve only played 5 royal so in that one! It’s one of the special enemies
@@emme oh the special treasure enemies forgot one of them was called that thanks ❤️ love your reactions
There wolf.
His Scottish accebt is good because he is Scottish. His English accent is pretty good though.
