Very much in the spacerock Gong/Canterbury scene vein, and several members of Gong play on this album.
Hillage has recently been touring again, playing this solo material with the Kavus Torabi led current Gong lineup as his backing band.

Fantastic stuff. Got to see Steve Hillage play a few years ago. He used my amp for the show. The entire Gong universe is something else. Check out the Flying Teapot trilogy by Gong or Space Shanty by Khan for more Hillage!

His techno project System 7 and work with The Orb are also fantastic, if you're into that sort of stuff. His partner Miquette is usually killing it along-side him.

takes me back to my teens, love this track and the album too. This, L and Green are my favourites and are a proud part of my music collection. These, along with his stuff with Gong are a bit "trippy" but don't give a damn, I like them. He's a good guitarist to boot too.

I believe this was Hillage’s 1st album after leaving Gong in ‘74(?). Gong’s music was incredibly good, incredibly psychedelic/weird, unapologetically. Hillage has had a long career since those days, in more recent years in an electronic duo with his wife Miquette Girardy on synths and stuff. Steve is a very influential guitarist to his generation of European creative space rockers, never really caught on as much in the US. : )

The version on "live herald" is even better. In fact the entire album's worth checking out. Was given that album, "decade" by Neil Young and "china" by vangelis by my brother on my 18th birthday. Haven't looked back since. Kudos for reacting to this. Nobody is doing Hillage as far as I can see.

MASTERPIECE !!!!!! The entire album is one trippy psychedelic surreal journey with Solar Musick Suite being the creme de la creme! Steve is out of the Canterbury Prog scene previously with GONG then one release with KHAN*** which included keysman Dave Steward (Hatfield & the North****, National Health*** & Bill Bruford's band from YES/King Crimson. He sings about a lot of Cosmic Spiritually infused ideas! NOTICE on the cover, the fish inside the vesica piscis “Vessel of the Fish” - a sacred symbol that is made of the intersection of two circles of the same radius and the center of each circle lies on the circumference of the other. The symbol prominently originated from Pythagorean history and portrays the divine feminity, female fertility, and birth of life. Connecting the overlapping points with lines allows you to create all the major enclosed geometric shapes without a measuring device starting with the Triangle, Square, Pentangle, Hectagon and on & on which are considered the forms from which Nature ITself is build upon ... Steve's was into that.

I used to listen to the band Gong when in my final year at high school and when I heard that Steve Hilllage had left the band to go solo, I bought the album the day that it was released in 1975 (unheard). I didn't regret this blind purchase. The best track on the album is "Aftaglid".
Another good song of his is "Lunar Musick Suite" from his album "L". Utopia are his backing band and Todd Rundgren is his engineer and producer.
But, the very best Steve Hillage is "Rainbow Dome Musick". Both tracks, one on each side of the vinyl album, are dreamy and amazing. They calm you and sooth you.

I saw Steve Hillage play a gig in about 1976 at Guildford University - but I was only 15 at the time. Very trippy and hippy. This was just before punk and new wave arrived and changed everything. I also remember having the Gong album Camembert Electrique. This stuff is very much of its time and to me it hasn’t aged very well. Top marks for nostalgia though!

Surprising choice--and a fantastic one. Steve was somewhat more than tangentially related to what's (controversially) known as "The Canterbury Scene" of 60's/early 70's British rock. The subject is far too long to summarize here, though Wikipedia does its customary okay job on the page dedicated to it. In brief, it's the bands which came out of The Wilde Flowers: Robert Wyatt-era Soft Machine and Caravan. It's a rabbit hole, though, so be warned.

Steve Hillage is a guitarist and a vocalist. Very avant guarde and mystic. A prog rock pioneer. I had 2 of his albums back in the 70s. I read about his album "L" in a Milwaukee entertainment section of the newspaper and bought the 8-track format. Very psychedelic and different. Much akin to Hawkwind and Pink Floyd. Then I had to buy "Fish Rising" too. You're the first channel I've seen to react to his music. Bravo!! 👏✌❤

Him and his partner, Miquette Giraudy, (the woman doing the "space whisper" on this song), set up the ambient dance act, System 7. Well worth listening to as well. He produced some quite popular UK bands too; Sham 69, Simple Minds, and others!

Bought the next(?) album, 'L', in '76, intrigued in part by an article touting his use of "glissandi" and his prior membership in Gong, a band I only knew by name and a reportedly deserved reputation as innovators. Can't say it had a lasting impact, much as I enjoyed and respected his playing, probably wasn't ready for it, too staid in my tastes. Sounds really cool to my ears now!

Lets face it folks, this is NOT Steve Hillages's best moment. This is not where I would have started. There is SO much brilliant work from this HIGHLY UNDERRATED artist. Perhaps a better start would be from the album "Green" (produced by Pink Floyd's Nick Mason) . How about "Sea Nature/Ether Ships" or "Unidentified (Flying Being)"? a great slice of space funk! ...or maybe "Lunar Musick Suite" from the Todd Rundgren produced "L" album. Also the band Gong features Steve Hillage on several albums . Try "Sold To The Highest Buddha" from "Angel's Egg", or "Zero The Hero and The Witch's Spell" from "Flying Teapot", OR a kick -ass piece of instrumental fusion "Master Builder". Gong was a beautiful mix of jazz, prog, and psychedelia, with a lot of humor mixed in. They shared quite a bit with Zappa. PLEASE, PLEASE GO BACK INTO STEVE HILLAGE'S WORK! You wont regret it! TRUST ME.

You guys, I'm sorry but I don't do Patreon at all. I'll use the excuse that if I start I'll get addicted to supporting with $ I just don't have in these trying days. Wah wah wah. Life's not an easy thing for any.
So among the suggestions you get from there pay attention to "Gong" requests. I suggest you start with song one on "You", their most progressive and psychedelic album to my mind. It is definitely a concept album to be taken in order, otherwise you won't have a clue about the Pothead Pixies and Zero the Hero.
Hillage and Gong are a huge and necessary exploration of the "Canterbury Scene". While prog-rock was exploding there was this weird and wonderful off-shoot of music. Gong. Soft Machine. Hatfield and the North, Matching Mole, and more. To follow the family trees as these people did work later in life is an amazing thing. So many phenomenal musicians that deserve their kudos.
In the band "System 7" (a computer operating system at that time), Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, both from "Gong", broke new ground in being credited with being the first "techno" band to perform live.
So, you're doin' Hillage charms my heart and is part of a whole era/scene of music that was phenomenal. My most familiar/favorite System 7 album go to "777".
But just watch this for yourselves. There's no way to do a reaction to it. "Dance 'til you drop!"
This man and his music have ALWAYS been whatever is considered psychedelic at the time, from the '70's and with this video, into 2009, full on trance-dance music with the laser lights and all. Hillage, Gong. "You".
Blessings from me and all the Pothead Pixie's.
