I vote for 351. So many options and potential for big power. Keep pushing it is worth it in the long run. It's not fun fixing years of bad repairs and maintenance. My Fox was in pretty bad shape I know exactly what your going through lol.
My '94 F150 4x4 with a 5.8 was puking oil from that damned dual sump oil pan. I had to pull the motor completely. While I was at it, I replaced the rear main and freeze plugs. It had about 392K on it then. It now has 404K miles and still runs great. If you're gonna pull that motor definitely keep a small block Ford in it!
WOW great transformation!!! Love that you decided to save that car, and that you want to do it right!! Cheap recipe...pull that motor, seems like the bottom end is still good, and holding compression, while its out, new oil pump and use the ford heavy duty oil pump shaft and use a felpro 1 piece oil pan gasket. New rear main seal. Should your cylinder crosshatch look good, new cam bearings, trick flow stage 1 cam, Ford SVT or trick flow high rev lifters and new Trick Flow pushrods. Use Ford GT40 3 BAR (identification mark) heads, they have the normal spark plug location, and work with any set of headers, unlike the GT40 P heads (dont use) they have 4 bar mark and have that stupid spark plug placement. TRICK flow 1.6 ROLLER ROCKERS!! Use MLS Multi Layer Steel head gaskets, they will fill inconsistencies on block deck and heads no need to deck block or heads. Advance new timing chain 2 degrees, your current old timing chain will have some slop and be out 2 to 4 degrees, piston to valve clearance should still be ok, new chain advanced, that cam will hit hard out of the hole at about 1800 RPM with those 4:10's. 285 at the wheels, about 330 at the crank, street tire low 13's, street slick mid to high 12's, and THIS CAR -WILL-HAUL ARSE!!! Energy Suspension motor mounts, they sit 5/8"s lower than stock or prothane mounts better centre of gravity and weight transfer, and hood clearance!! All this for fairly cheap DIY performance and less headache as the Ls will need a specific exhaust setup. DISCONNECT BATTERY! Oh noooo, that oil pan leak happening right after you put the gt40 intake in?? Well, I sure hope you keep it Ford my friend. As always, great content. I got a feeling this channel is about to take off. 👍

I once saw an article, years ago, might of been in MMFF's magazine?? Where they took a 5.0 and swapped the stock E7TE heads and cam onto a 351 Windsor and used machined plate adapters to fit the stock 5.0 upper/lower intake, and the end result was 325 LBS of torque and 248 horsepower at the crank. Plus the 351 Windsor weighs approximately 100 to 120 LBS heavier than the stock 5.0 Windsor block.....They wanted to show what the result was from just changing the cubic inches would do with the complete stock 5.0 top end on the 351, was kind of a disappointing result to say the least, those E7TE heads are very flow restrictive, I think in your previous video you were hinting you might go this route, so you would have to procure specific headers and higher cost for the increased deck height of the 351 and factor in you will need a GT40 specific lower intake to fit the 351, just saw one on EBAY..$1350.00 US, ouch!! However if you went with a carburetor you could budget a lot cheaper, but Holley sniper or Terminator X significantly increase your costs to stay fuel injected....So the 351 swap in my opinion is only worth the cost if you go with heads cam and intake, to offset the weight gain you will incur with a 351 swap.....I'd say stick with the 302 and instead of the GT40 Heads you could possibly factor in a set of budget aluminum heads, Trick Flow Fast as Cast 170 C/C or Edelbrock 170 C/C E-street are budget friendly, go with the 58 C/C chambers to bump compression a little, should be about 9.5:1 great for the street. You are a great DIY guy, so this should be a great route for you to go with...In my opinion anyway...🙂
Lots of good points! One of the biggest driving factors for moving over to the 351w was that the current 5.0 is likely knocking on death's door as we speak 😂. Also, if we're throwing money at it, the gains are more significant on the 351w. But like you said, you gotta go all in for it to matter. Which...... Is why the LS is so alluring.
@aveteranidiot i just repalced the oil pan gasket on my 91 lx coupe and you can do it without lifting the motor or dropping the k member I dropped the pan and essentially laid the gasket over the k member and then came from under the oil pan and put one side of the gasket over the pan and then stretched just enough to go over the other side of the pan and added silicone to the corners around the front and rear where needed and bolted it back up and if you want more room you can just drop the steering rack and that will let the oil pan drop another inch or two its still tight but it can be done and i had to do a rear main seal and wound up doing the rear main again becuase there were knicks on the outside of the crank where the seal rides get yourself a crank repair sleeve as a just incase measure i had to use it but now the new seal doesnt leak a drop i wish i wouldve gotten one the first time it wouldve saved me a lot of headache
