The visuals aged poorly, but BTN left the biggest footprint. The villagers are iconic, the music can't be topped. It hit the right balance of witty, melancholy, and challenging.
A lot of people may attack me on this but my favorite harvest moon game was harvest moon DS and DS cute. It was the one I grew up playing and I still love it. But Friends of Mineral town is also great
Harvest Moon is a *Game Title* that Natsume copyrighted when they brought *Bokujo Monogatari* (Farm Story/Legend/Tale) over to the western market. The creator was always Marvelous, and when they got their own localizing firm (XSeed), they decided to not longer use Natsume to bring the games to the western market. But since Natsume has the right to the name Harvest Moon, the games were now released under the label of Story of Seasons, and Natsume made their *own* farming simulator game, still using the Harvest Moon name. Basically, this is a long way of saying that this video is just plain wrong.

Nothing will ever beat A Wonderful Life and Another Wonderful Life. Those two are the best, hands down. I am enjoying Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon Light of Hope though.
It's sad that the best graphics for the series were in 2006 and 2008 for Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade. And that the graphics have only regressed since.
agreed. i played BTN and AWLSE and one of the reasons was because i upgraded to PS2 back then. i read the wiki about how there are actually a total of 8 bachelorettes in FoMT, an older one, compared to 5 in BTN, the newer one. the gameplay & features went back & forth so much it's actually easier to judge by the graphics. and that is kinda sad indeed.
It's honestly insane, especially when comparing them one after another like this. I'd argue my favorite art/style/game mechanics wise would have to be rune factory 4, but definitely everything else has just been absolutely subpar. Especially in the direct harvest moon (story of seasons?) line. (This is also coming from someone who has only ever played RF4, so take what I say with a grain of salt lol)

My favorite : Back To Nature Hero of Leaf Valley Animal Parade The Tale of Two Town (DS) but I really like HM Grand Bazaar from the way to sell the crops and other at the bazaar
Omg finally someone else who also likes The Tale of Two Towns It's my favorite one for sure, I find the towns and the characters charming, the music is good, you can raise cats and dogs to help take care of your animals and many other things I really don't get why it seems to be so forgotten among the other harvest moon games. At least I don't see people hating on it so I guess that's good? It's still my favorite though Grand Bazaar is another one that I used to play a lot, I still like it but it's not my absolute favorite And the first one I played is More Friends of Mineral Town, which is JUST ADORABLE But it doesn't have the best barchelor of the franchise (which, in my opinion, is Cam) so it's also not my favorite, even though I really like it
A Wonderful Life was also on Gamecube!!! I had it and I LOVED it as a kid. Along with the original animal crossing on GameCube, that shit took up half my friggin childhood omg

Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade for me will always be where it’s at. Great story. Probably the best characters and marriage candidates from the whole series (is there a bad boy/girl? I think not! I have such trouble marrying 😂) Not to forget the animals! I’m a big rancher focus, so AP was definitely something I enjoyed. Plus it’s just so beautiful. And more challenging than Stardew Valley 😶
Animal parade is my all time favorite. I fell in love with it as a kid and is still one of my all time favorites. Only thing I've found that's come close to it is My Time at Portia. You should give it a try!

PSA:story of seasons is made by the original creators of harvest moon. Any new games they're making is under the story of seasons title. They switched western distributors but natsume still owns the harvest moon name so it cashes in on it but any new harvest moon game is not actually made by the company that made harvest moon (and frankly they actually suck, so if you're looking for harvest moon games that are recently made, look for story of seasons instead.) Tale of two towns is my absolute favourite!! It’s absolutely beautiful and there’s so much to do. It’s so relaxing and I love the story too, it’s so enjoyable.
Yeeeeeeees omg it's so good to see more people who gives some love to that game 💜 It's such a cute and gourgeous game, there's a lot of festivals for each town and they are all amazing The characters' pictures are just ADORABLE And it has some of the best bachelors/bachelorettes. Specially Cam, I don't remember having any other bachelor in any of the other games that is as kind, gentle and sensible as him
i thought im the only one. The cooking festival hooked me the most. The farms are also cool designed, not exactly efficient, but aesthetically pleasing.
This series underwent a lot of experimentation, adding and removing aspects of the game all the time, as well as changing the art style between 2D and 3D back and forth. Oddly enough, the original SNES Harvest Moon was one of the most well balanced and had gotten most of the key concepts right.
You're right. And for some reason I had the memory of SNES HM being way more "brown" than it was. I remember that I never liked the graphics as a kid. I preferred playing MFoMT.
Friends Of Mineral Town and DS were my favorite, with DS looking the best for my preferred style. The classic 2D sprite model with sharp, beautiful character art when interacting with the townsfolk... I honestly can't hang with anything after Sunshine Island. I miss the old Harvest Moon.

I felt like the series was going in such a good direction when AP came out. Definitely was the height for me, but they just let me down after that 😭 Such a beautiful game and style and then they just forgot about it I guess
There are legit SO many things i want to add to that game (i.e swimming, jumping, bigger family, more interesting cutscenes, maybe your own boat (obviously a small one), the ability to stay overnight at sundae inn after completing the tutorial, backstory to the main character, a way to make that minecart by ganache mine work, etc.) yeah there’s more where that came from. Basically i want them to just copy the whole game’s code, and add newer features to it.
I inherited an old game boy advanced from my grandpa (Rest in peace) and while in school everyone else would be playing on a Ds or something like that while I'd be over playing friends of mineral town and enjoying every second of it. Those were the Times.
Save the Homeland wasn't the best, but it did hold some charm, and it's 4th of my list of favorites of the Franchise. For me my favs being #1 Harvest Moon 64, #2 Harvest Moon BTN, #3 Harvest Moon Hero of Leaf Valley #4 Harvest Moon Save the Homeland. Even though Hero of Leaf Valley was a "Remake" of save the homeland it's definitely a vast improvement, more so than Friends of Mineral Town when compared to Back to Nature. So much so I think it deserves being viewed as a stand alone rather than a remake.

I first played the PSP one on my cousins PSP, and I don't understand the series at all XD Several years later when I am older, I decided to play HM:FOMT and fell in love, I'm currently playing the TOTT version and now it's my all time favorite HM game along with RF3

I grow up playing BTN and MFOMT. Also several titles from ps2, nds and all from 3ds. Dont understand why so many fanatic fans of BTN/FOMT. I personally think Trio of Towns is currently the best one. In term of story, Innocent Life wins though. The bad ending is just so dark and the good ending broke my heart

Love that game but wish it had been on another system. The psp games broke to easily and if it got the tiniest scratch wouldn't play anymore. Unlike the larger discs. Also frames would easily break. I need a new copy.
First off: why is there My time at Portia on the thumbnail? Second off: Harvest Moon continued as Story of Seasons. Bokujō Monogatari is the original title. The title got changed for us to Harvest Moon. And later on to Story of Seasoms because it isnt published by Natsume anymore but they do own the name. So basicly the new 'Harvest Moon' games by Natsume has like nothing to do with Bokujō Monogatari anymore. Thats Story of Seasons now.
I guess we're the odd ones out because this was my favorite one that I've played and I only played three versions but the one I always came back to was Magical Melody.

Why include Light of Hope and The Lost Valley? Despite the titles, those games were not even made by the original developers of "Harvest Moon". Also, I think including those two in this list would not count as "evolution" but "devolution" instead.

And those recent "Harvest Moon" (Light of Hope, The Lost Valley, Skytree Village, Seeds of Memories) games are not a part of the "Bokujō Monogatari" franchise. After Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, all the newer Bokujō Monogatari games have been released as Story of Seasons in North America. And the newer "Harvest Moon" games are just there to rip off people who didnt know any better. Natsume should have announced the name change instead of riding on the success of Marvelous' Bokujō Monogatari games to sell their games. This would have saved everyone from all the confusion and saved everyone some time and money. Natsume translated and localized the original Bokujou Monogatari games (which is the franchise) and rebranded it as "Harvest Moon", so they owned the rights to the brand "Harvest Moon", but not the franchise Bokujou Monogatari. Afterwards, newer Bokujou Monogatari games went with a different company to bring it to the west, but Natsume owned the title "Harvest Moon" so they had to rename it to Story of Seasons. Natsume, realizing that they weren't getting Harvest Moon games anymore, decided to half-ass their own title and pass it off as the same thing when it isn't at all.

I played these as an adult. I still have my old systems and games and I still play these games often. Animal Crossing for GameCube is still my favorite of all of them.

Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade for me will always be where it’s at. Great story. Probably the best characters and marriage candidates from the whole series (is there a bad boy/girl? I think not! I have such trouble marrying 😂)
Not to forget the animals! I’m a big rancher focus, so AP was definitely something I enjoyed. Plus it’s just so beautiful. And more challenging than Stardew Valley 😶
Animal parade is my all time favorite. I fell in love with it as a kid and is still one of my all time favorites. Only thing I've found that's come close to it is My Time at Portia. You should give it a try!

PSA:story of seasons is made by the original creators of harvest moon. Any new games they're making is under the story of seasons title. They switched western distributors but natsume still owns the harvest moon name so it cashes in on it but any new harvest moon game is not actually made by the company that made harvest moon (and frankly they actually suck, so if you're looking for harvest moon games that are recently made, look for story of seasons instead.) ANY HARVEST MOON GAME MADE RECENTLY ISNT BY THE ORIGINAL CREATORS!! THE SERIES NOW GOES UNDER STORY OF SEASONS. i thought im the only one. The cooking festival hooked me the most. The farms are also cool designed, not exactly efficient, but aesthetically pleasing.
This series underwent a lot of experimentation, adding and removing aspects of the game all the time, as well as changing the art style between 2D and 3D back and forth. Oddly enough, the original SNES Harvest Moon was one of the most well balanced and had gotten most of the key concepts right.

Friends Of Mineral Town and DS were my favorite, with DS looking the best for my preferred style. The classic 2D sprite model with sharp, beautiful character art when interacting with the townsfolk... I honestly can't hang with anything after Sunshine Island. I miss the old Harvest Moon.

There are legit SO many things i want to add to that game (i.e swimming, jumping, bigger family, more interesting cutscenes, maybe your own boat (obviously a small one), the ability to stay overnight at sundae inn after completing the tutorial, backstory to the main character, a way to make that minecart by ganache mine work, etc.) yeah there’s more where that came from. Basically i want them to just copy the whole game’s code, and add newer features to it.

Save the Homeland wasn't the best, but it did hold some charm, and it's 4th of my list of favorites of the Franchise. For me my favs being #1 Harvest Moon 64, #2 Harvest Moon BTN, #3 Harvest Moon Hero of Leaf Valley #4 Harvest Moon Save the Homeland. Even though Hero of Leaf Valley was a "Remake" of save the homeland it's definitely a vast improvement, more so than Friends of Mineral Town when compared to Back to Nature. So much so I think it deserves being viewed as a stand alone rather than a remake.

Love that game but wish it had been on another system. The psp games broke to easily and if it got the tiniest scratch wouldn't play anymore. Unlike the larger discs. Also frames would easily break. I need a new copy.

First off: why is there My time at Portia on the thumbnail?
Second off: Harvest Moon continued as Story of Seasons. Bokujō Monogatari is the original title. The title got changed for us to Harvest Moon. And later on to Story of Seasoms because it isnt published by Natsume anymore but they do own the name. So basicly the new 'Harvest Moon' games by Natsume has like nothing to do with Bokujō Monogatari anymore. Thats Story of Seasons now.

Why include Light of Hope and The Lost Valley? Despite the titles, those games were not even made by the original developers of "Harvest Moon". Also, I think including those two in this list would not count as "evolution" but "devolution" instead.

No they're not. They weren't even published by Marvelous. All the original games were. Bokujō Monogatari is what the franchise is really called. And those recent "Harvest Moon" (Light of Hope, The Lost Valley, Skytree Village, Seeds of Memories) games are not a part of the "Bokujō Monogatari" franchise.
After Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, all the newer Bokujō Monogatari games have been released as Story of Seasons in North America. And the newer "Harvest Moon" games are just there to rip off people who didnt know any better. Natsume should have announced the name change instead of riding on the success of Marvelous' Bokujō Monogatari games to sell their games. This would have saved everyone from all the confusion and saved everyone some time and money.
To those who still dont know the full story behind this name change, please watch "How Harvest Moon Became Story of Seasons" by Gammalad on TH-cam.
Knight And SpaceShip They're not part of the same franchise, they share the same title and that is it. Natsume translated and localized the original Bokujou Monogatari games (which is the franchise) and rebranded it as "Harvest Moon", so they owned the rights to the brand "Harvest Moon", but not the franchise Bokujou Monogatari. Afterwards, newer Bokujou Monogatari games went with a different company to bring it to the west, but Natsume owned the title "Harvest Moon" so they had to rename it to Story of Seasons. Natsume, realizing that they weren't getting Harvest Moon games anymore, decided to half-ass their own title and pass it off as the same thing when it isn't at all.
