Man this is by far my favorite guitar channel on TH-cam. I consider myself an intermediate player, not interested in getting overly technical just wanna be able to play cool shit in genres I like (shoegaze, indie, britpop) and this channel has been consistently delivering for a long time
Agreed. It's nice see a talented player on TH-cam consisently dedicated to alternative scenes and not regurgitating the same classic funk/blues/metal players. I mean, I like John Frusciante too, but we don't need everyone's take on his playing...
@@BubbleManxx I've got a few different TH-cam guitarists as I enjoy metal and blues but I do like coming over here to learn something different. This is where I learned how to play spellbound at.
Underrated? Not sure about that. Loved and appreciated by the people who really care. Underappreciated by those who don't know what they are talking about perhaps...
Fantastic Adrian you have nailed it. Mcgeoch was a genius his riffs are legendary. Remember seeing the banshees at the barrowland Glasgow and the place going mental at this song. Great stuff keep up the good work.
Never got too far into 80s alternative but Peter Murphy, PIL, and Chameleons UK are personal favorites of mine. Only just today I heard McGeoch’s The Light Pours Out of Me - I had no idea all these years it was anyone’s but Peter Murphy’s. Then a quick look online and holy cow - this McGeoch guy did everything !?!? Hugely talented in my book, and all of you who already knew - you have my utmost respect.
Absolutely magnificent! The 2:40s bit is imo the best part of the song, both on this video and on the original single release itself. Releases endorphins....It's sounds so dark, moody and foreboding!
I cannot play any kind of instruments and I do not understand anything about music composition… but i listen to your video as when a teacher is explaining a poem. And it is great…
Wonderful - cant believe how interesting your song selection is - most of my favourite songs. Excellent straight forward teaching and information - thanks so much.
I've gone mad and bought a flanger and a delay because of this! I was lucky enough to see them twice on this tour as well. What a guitar player John was.
Lovely video. You nailed his live tone. I have two original SG1000’s which I have used to play a few Mcgeoch covers on my channel if anyone’s interested. The original Yamaha SG’s are very heavy, better quality and have coil taps which is also a part of the sound.
Wow. Another great post punk classic! I hope one day we will see some Echo and the Bunnymen early days lesson, like Show of strength of Heaven up here. Or Television - Friction.
James Honeyman-Scott, Keith Levene, Stuart Adamson, Andy Gill, Daniel Ash, Bernie Sumner, both guitarists from The Chameleons, Craig Scanlon...all those guys shaped and defined post-punk music.
Great job with the guitar timbre. Very good playing. I learned this song, I don't remember how, almost 20 years ago and it's a nice surprise to remember how I played it and see that it was exactly like that.
thank you for keeping his memory alive with such enthusiasm and talent. SATB has a big place in my heart and you are doing it great justice, cheers friend 🤙
What a fantastic channel. You are so close to nailing it, very, very faithful, and clearly played by someone who adores JM's flair. Andy, a request; do Into The Light :)
Thanks for this! Never expected to see a Siouxsie and the Banshees lesson on a 'guitar tutorial' type of channel. I've been learning the guitar for the past 20 years and there are two sides to my guitar brain - one side that tries to learn all the blues/jazz stuff (maj7 m7b5 chords, blues licks blah blah blah), and the other side that really loves stuff like Banshees and The Cure, which 'typical' or 'serious' guitarists frown upon because they are unorthodox, 'too simple' or 'rely on effects'. Thank you for showing that both worlds can meet on one TH-cam guitar channel. :)
Juju is my all time favourite album. Been trying to learn to play Arabian Knights and was pleased with my progress until I saw this video, that was awesome. Now I want that guitar and the flanger!
Hup. . hup. . .hup hup Ho!!,. . . . . 'cryin' man , . . .what an excellent presentation and tribute to the man and his music and a lesson thrown in as well, so well done Sir, many thanks. 'Spellbound' would sound great on this too!!
Great job!! Takes me back to Middle School in late 70's/Early 80's! Heavily influenced by punk/ new wave and post punk as I got older!! Love it and your great selections!!
Good call on "Cities In Dust". Even Siouxsie admitted that John Valentine Carruthers is unfairly overlooked when it comes to Banshees guitarists. He was awesome on Clock DVA's "Advantage" album, one of my all time favourites.
I'm really looking for someone to do Christine one of my favorite songs and why play guitar I guess you need a really good 12 string for that one maybe
Alright, I subscribed. I discovered this song just over a year ago and became fascinated with it. Played the bass part by ear and tried the guitar part by watching the live video but gave up. You making this video is so timely, and so instructional. Great stuff. And that is a beautiful Eastwood you have there.
If anyone is deserving of this - it's you. This is the song that made me fall in love with the Banshees the first time I heard it on the radio. Essential of course to the McGeoch sound is the Roland JC120 amp. Wayne Hussey is a big fan of McGeoch - would love to see you do a 12-string video one day.
Always thrilled to see more of John's work on this channel. Wouldn't mind seeing some of the late Stuart Adamson (Skids/Big Country) too now that you've got one of these, as he played an SG2000.
Your videos are always so well presented, Adrian! Many thanks for again showcasing the talent that was John McGeogh. Juju is a flawless album &, in my opinion, McGeogh's creative highpoint. The Banshees were blessed with some innovative guitarists, notably the metallic-flanged offerings of John McKay (e.g. Placebo Effect), John McGeogh and John Valentine Carruthers (especially on Tinderbox (92 Degrees, Lands End etc)). Best wishes!
Picked up the McGeoch in Green recently...... love it. Solid build and so wonderful to play. Would love to see you tackle Robin Simon’s playing on Ultravox’s System of Romance album. 😉
@@olafbigandglad When I saw Magazine, they were the support for XTC. XTC were good, but Magazine stole the show imo. No idea who was playing guitar! Cheers
I love your channel, you explain things really well and even a mediocre guitarist like myself can follow what you're doing. I'm a really big McGeoch fan so I especially enjoyed this video as well as the Spellbound one. Don't know if you're aware of this but the Generation X song Heavens Inside features some classic McGeoch guitar work. Highly recommend giving that a listen. Keep up the great work.
I love the SG, Stuart Adamson of the Skids and Big Country played them, I was big fan of Stuart. The Juju Album was one of my favorites of Souxsie and the Banchees. Thanks for putting these classic punk / post punk tutorials out there. Now I can try to play songs I tried to play when I was a teenager.
Fantastic tutorial! I'm waiting for Eastwood's copy of the Shergold Marathon six string bass to arrive. It's the instrument famously used by Peter Hook for much of Joy Division's "Closer" album and throughout his time in New Order. Would love some more JD tutorials for lead guitar 😃
Hey Adrian, thanks for posting this great Banshees tutorial, the pedal breakdown at the end is really helpful. I am a massive John McGeoch fan and would love to see some Magazine tutorials too please!!
Stuart Adamson got a great sound with the Yamaha when he played in The Skids. You may consider doing a lesson on playing "Into The Valley". With Big Country he played mostly Strats. His other guitarist in Big Country played a Yamaha. Thanks for the lesson and congrats on the nice new guitar! It's nice.
Brilliant Adrian, John has been an influence on my playing since real life and I always have one of his in the repertoire, currently it's My Tulpa, Rhythm of Cruelty before that. It's really wonderful that you are keeping his legacy alive. 😎🎙🎸✅
Excellent. I bought this on the day it came out as a single as I had with every Banshees single since I discovered them with Happy House and it's good to hear the track in isolation and how different it makes the whole song sound when it's broken down. You should get your own series on BBC 4 as you have a great presenting style.
John McGeoch was The Man. Saw him up close many times. Innovative, creative and left field, but not so far removed from 'rock' that people couldn't relate to his craft. More please, Adrian. Permafrost next? The greatest guitar solo of all time. In my opinion....
Nice lesson! And beautiful sound on that sg1000. How about some Stuart Adamson lessons? He used that baby a lot. And I second the request for some Bunnymen. Will Sergeant had some incredible guitar moments.
Spectacular, mate - through and through - Nice to meet a fellow McGeoch fan. Well done! Would love to see your take on Monitor if you're looking for more excuses :) Cheers!
Great Idea Adrian! I also have an great deal of admiration for Mc Geoch. He is definitely an underrated guitar hero.. Those were Siouxie's best collaborative creative years when he was around... I never understood why Yamaha discontinued the product.. Good thing Eastwood carries on with the model.. Please keep doing more of that stuff :)
I'm hoping they do another run of that guitar....I'm left handed....live Johns sounds and style....ps stumbled on one of your old video playing spellbound...was going to post and say you need to get the Yamaha sg1000 copie....but seen this video and seen u got one ...oh that is the best album too .
Where else on TH-cam do you get very coolest indie stuff alongside cool folk finger style , blues. Jazz . Rockabilly etc etc ??? Nowhere, that,s where.
The closest we’ll get to having McGeoch sit down and teach us. Well done - absolutely stunning.
The Yammy SG series were feckin phenomenal guitars! Absolutely beautiful instruments. ❤❤❤

Not nearly as underrated as Robin Guthrie

Enjoyed this. John invented his own rules. I'm sure Geordie Walker and Mcgeoch followed each other's playing. Both very dark and inspiring 🌴
McGeoch was certainly a master. Him, Johnny Marr, and Will Sergeant I think were the most creative and unique of the era.
Robert smith too
