  • The short list of performance cars that mere mortals can afford has just grown by one- Hyundai’s Veloster N. Track ready the moment it leaves the dealership lot, it’s also a comfortable daily driver. Tom Voelk travels to Thunderhill Raceway Park in California to flog this hot hatch. He also interviews Albert Biermann, the engineer poached by Hyundai from BMW’s M Performance division to make the Veloster N letter perfect.

    About Tom:
    Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

    You know what haters gonna hate but you know what I actually love the styling and overall mechanical design of this car. This is coming from an owner of a older 90s Honda Type R. In fact I have a feeling this thing would give the new Type R a run for it's money.

    • @Iron883Man
      @Iron883Man 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Type R is still the faster track weapon of course, but I'd say the N is a lot more fun on a daily basis. The N Custom mode adds so much value to the car. Being able to individually set up all the driving mechanics beats the hell out of Honda's preselected drive modes.

      @james bond 6.1 seconds is incredibly conservative. Most drivers are getting in the mid 5s without launch control, and it's exceptional through corners, handling even better than a CTR. It's the 2nd fastest FWD Hatch around.

      Except its not actually a cheap car. Go look up lease rates for the Veloster N, and you will see they are astronautical, and you can afford far more expensive sticker price cars for the same monthly lease payment. Why? Very smart people, that know way more than you or I, calculate the true cost of owning the vehicle guessing what the depreciation will be. After all, if you buy a used Ferrari for $150K but you sell it for $140K because its rare and actually appreciated a bit (relatively speaking even though you put miles on it), your total cost of ownership is almost nothing. By contrast if you buy a $30K car, but you can only sell it for $15K, your actual cost of ownership was higher than the Ferrari. Current lease rates are anticipating a 5 year depreciation of 58%, one of the highest in the industry.
      So either the really smart guys that spend fortunes on collecting data to make these predictions and its literally their careers are wrong, or we are wrong and are blinded by the low entry price forgetting about the resale price.

    • @tk9839
      @tk9839 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BoopSnoot At first you talk leasing then about resale? There is no resale when you're leasing. Moreover, you make an incongruous example: a guy purchasing an entry-level car like the NVel. is because he does not have $150k to invest in a Ferrari and vice versa...a guy into investing in Ferraris is not going to buy an NVel...

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tk9839 Reading is hard, eh? Lease rates demonstrate what resale value is likely to be, estimated by experts with massive amounts of money on the line over large sales numbers. If a new vehicle has huge lease rates compared to its sale price, it means its expected to have extremely poor residual value. Follow the conversation, junior.

    • @tk9839
      @tk9839 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BoopSnoot I just checked the leasing rate of NVel. and its chief competitor Honda Civic tR and honda has a higher leasing rate of approximately %3, so does this mean Nvel's residual value is higher? Thus I checked out, for example, the value of a 3-year-old Veloster Turbo and its depreciation rate was average not astronomically lower than any other car...Furthermore, you can't "afford far more expensive sticker price cars for the same monthly lease payment" Also a person wanting a Nvel or hot-hatch type of cars, they aren't going to want a far more expensive SUV for similar monthly lease payment if it exists...they are going to want similar cars to NVel. like the Type R which stated earlier has a higher monthly lease rate. What's with the "Reading is hard, eh? and junior?" Stop it, I don't appreciate your little snooty remarks

    • @tk9839
      @tk9839 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's simple but the hardest part is getting the car moving from 1st gear: just have to find the balance between the clutch and gas pedals...there's a sweet spot where the two meet as you're slowly releasing the clutch you can feel the clutch grabbing onto the gear and the car will move even without using the gas peddle on flat level street then you give a little gas to move faster and rest is history... don't get discouraged if you don't get it at first which is normal.

  • @tmh44
    @tmh44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    As a hot hatch fanatic I've been interested in this since I saw the first European reviews...as you were going through the price I was thinking $35k, but UNDER $30k including all the enhancements...that's one helluva lot of car for the dough.
    I will absolutely be test driving one, though the Bay Area commute makes the dual clutch potentially appealing.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I figured it would would be priced a couple thousand less than Type R. Under 30K (by $5 probably) surprised a lot of us. You will be waiting a couple years for the dual clutch, that's the word from Mr. Biermann. Since Seattle traffic is much like the Bay Area, I can understand. The manual is pretty nice though.

    • @tmh44
      @tmh44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrivenCarReviews appreciate the input--I currently own three manual transmission cars (1984 Porsche 911 coupe, 2001 Mazda Miata, 2008 Acura TL Type S)...will likely sell one for my next daily-driver and have finally given in to the luxury of an auto...though it needs to be manually-shiftable and quick.
      Either way I want to drive this car upon release, maybe it'll convince me that I'm crazy to want two pedals ;)

    I am deeply disappointed that Hyundai did not bring the i30n to the United States. There are features in that that aren't in Velociter. The i30N is a more practical and better looking car. It comes in both hatchback and Fastback overseas. The I30N has the ability to extend the driver's seat, so that you get better thigh support if you're taller. It has venting for the brakes that comes in from the front scoop. That I don't see in the velociter. The i30n also has a full spare tire. It has more usable space. Just not a fan of the velociter. Why does Hyundai keep screwing Us in the United States.

    • @PeteEbenezerrNewman
      @PeteEbenezerrNewman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The Veloster has same vents in the buper the goes around the front breaks. It works and quite similar if not same as the i30N.
      The fasterback i30N looks so good... I will personally go for the regular i30N or i30N fastback over the Veloster N.

      @@PeteEbenezerrNewman thank you for clarifying that Peter. As somebody who truly enjoys driving this isn't exciting update but I honestly would prefer for work and for life to have the i30n as sometime as I have clients with me I need two rear doors. What I'm truly hoping to see is a Sonata N. although I hope they change the rear lights from the current 2018 Sonata as I think that they where downgrade from my 2015 I will say I love the new grill. Anyway back to the i30n and the velociter N. I saw online there was a gentleman who upgraded his i30n to 320 horsepower and he gives a link to the company that has the performance chip. Honestly the upgrade from 275 horsepower to 3:20 makes it competitive with Honda Civic type-r yet it's much more composed than the Honda Civic type-r

    Went to 3 Dealer's to compare price
    Honda type R $38,064
    Veloster N $37,465
    That's only $599.00 Difference.
    This is Ontario CA.
    Also noticed that Honda is willing lower the price compared to Hyundai.
    Also no test drive until you are ready to pay for it.

    I'm trying to watch this car to learn to see if I can rebuild my 2.4 and put the Hyundai twin spool turbo on that or what parts I'm going to have to replace to be able to do that as it should do even better being bigger than the 2.0. that being said I'm going to have to figure out all the parts I need to change out I may buy a 2013 or 14 turbo motor as either a parts car or to replace them out but I prefer to use the head from the 2.4 for the larger displacement.

    I don't understand the 3 door thing, isn't the development more expensive because you're kind of developing 2 versions of a car at once and rigidy must match the other one. Since they have i30n as a 4 door hatch, veloster could have been just a 2 door and for difference in development i30 fastback could of have 2 door option

    • @DrivenCarReviews

      The Honda is $5,500 more (retail, I won't go down the path of dealer markup). That extra money buys more power and an established performance halo. The N is loads of fun but it's the new kid on the block. Better? In what what way? Total performance? Design? Bang for the buck? In this case I think that's for the buyer to decide when all of those things are considered. .

    A good review, but a little context would be nice. How does it drive compared to a GTI or Civic R or Focus ST? I know I need to test drive for myself, but I want more of your opinion on differences/which you like best; that's the point, no? Clearly you're smitten, which is a strong sign, but still. a bit more would go ta long way to make this a much more useful review.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael,
      Here's why I generally don't do that. I would be lying if I claimed I could remember the subtle driving dynamic details of the GTI, Type R or Focus ST because it has been months since I've driven them. Driving them back to back when everything is fresh in my mind would allow me to do that. That wasn't possible here. If there was a clear difference in performance I could state that but all of them are very good. Styling, interior quality and price would be what sets them apart and that is up to the buyer.
      Funny you should mention it, a number of auto writers were talking about that very thing over dinner, how it's tough to really give accurate comparisons when test drives are weeks or months apart.
      I'm an auto writer doing my best to give you an idea of what a car is like, I would suggest you take any review as a guide, not a bible. As you say, it's REALLY important to go out and test drive these vehicles and see if they work for you. As an individual. That's all that matters when it comes to making those monthly payments.

    So 201hp for US$26k (rspec) , 250hp for $28k (N), and 275hp for $30k (Npp)...why even make non-pp N cars? Who's the market for a non-pp Veloster N? Is it there to grab rspec/turbo/ultimate customers that don't want to go all in? Is it there to grab GTI-S buyers?
