    Hi Wild Guy!, I'm been painting on and off for a few years. Always said I'm not the artist my child is. But they gave me confidence and watching your video I'm so ready to finish the painting that I started 6 months ago. Before I go away, I really want to tell you how awesome this video is. I will be looking for more that's for sure. Stay well and keep that wild presentation on for all of us!

    Great video, I have been painting wet on wet now for 5 years and still struggle at times with mud mixing. Letting things get tacky or dry is the best tip, I don't know where I learned this but gently placing a clean shop paper towel on the canvas where you want to add another layer of paint for half an hour to an hour really speeds this process up.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah do that sometimes too - The towel will soak up a lot of the lose medium in the paint... thus making it firmer. It really helps for when you want to apply highlights and such.

    Ok so I painted for the first time ever last week! I went to a paint like Bob Ross experience bought for me as a present..
    I spent the day with the coolest guy and some others and came home with my proud painting! 👏🏼 yay! (My mountains sucked but hey my first painting)
    I've seen all 6million episodes of the joy of painting so decided to grab some canvases, brushes, paint and an easel and go for it.. I mean how hard can it be! VERY is the answer to that!!
    Made some bad ass northern lights on a black canvas!! Was going proper well until I wanted to put the trees underneath! I have no idea what went wrong but can't get highlights to stick and ended up just overworking the whole thing until it was mush!!
    Then I saw this video! Thanks so much!
    Fresh canvas out and a new teacher in you to guide me!! Let's go paint some happy little accidents! 😊

    Before I got into landscape oil painting I did a lot of astrophotography. I captured all the best nebulas and galaxies in both hemispheres then processed data from Hubble and James Webb telescopes then I wanted to paint my nebulas after printing them on canvas. Always jealous of my sisters gifted talent. Thought I can’t do that. I talked to her about oil painting and she gave me everything I needed. TH-cam is my teacher and teachers like you make this hobby so much easier. Thank you for your efforts in bringing us the best tips for getting what we want , a great painting.

      @@WildCreates The grouping of so many tips in one video that has taken me months of watching various painters to collect. I have followed you, Bob, Bill, and Kevin for months... but you brought many of their (and your) key tips into one place. The last of your video you said Slow Down! I heard you say this a few months ago. "We are not BR or BA.... and we should not expect to complete a painting in 30 minutes." I slowed down and had more fun and better outcomes. Someone just had to give me permission. While this tip is just mentioned here in passing, hopefully others who are just becoming Wild fans will catch it, too.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slowing down helps so so so MUCH.
      Not only do I get to enjoy it more ( cause there is less pressure ) but I also find myself taking more time with each brush stroke.... Which pays off :)

    Thank you for this video! So many great tips. I'm so glad I stuck around until the very end for the last bit. I KNOW my biggest problem is getting into that mindset that I need to do this in 30-60 min like I see Ross, Alexander and numerous other wet on wet painters do in their videos. You are the first one that I have seen that has said it is OK to put it aside and come back hours or even days later and pick up where you left off. To me that is a HUGE piece of information. I've been discouraged lately and this gives me the inspiration to drag everything out and start painting again!

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah - I started out the same way. Finish in the same time as the tutorial. When you slow down you enjoy it so so so much more AND you really see a difference. Hence why I like to pop a nice bottle of whiskey and wine when I paint... Thats the true painting hack there ha ha ha

    • @gohabs9
      @gohabs9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have this problem too, but i like to finish the day I start. I find by the next day, week, any time later, I cant get in the same headspace and I want to start a new piece. I find myself starting way more pieces than I ever finish.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you find yourself in that spot - I find it best to do more simplistic paintings. This way you know you will finish in the time you want to dedicate to it.

    there are a one or two things you pointed out that I will try that I haven't heard before. With that said, I am a Master mud mixer. 😂
    I really struggle with layering, If I'm only dealing with sky, water, and a slim layer of land I'm fine.
    I think I just end up with too much paint. I will try the wipe off method for areas I'm trying to build.
    with that said, I have had some success with waiting 12+ hrs (the next day) to continue. This may indeed be just a situation of too many/thick paint when I push forward in a single setting.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious to what those one to two things were?

    • @kp-collectibles
      @kp-collectibles ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WildCreates the video confirmed what I was thinking, too much paint, so simply wiping it off w/ a paper towel, never occurred to me, even though I've seen Bob saying 'if you don't like it just scrape it off', well he seemed to always use the knife to do it, and I had terrible results attempting that method lol.
      the other one, which I've done but just never heard it mentioned before, just walk away, leave it, come back later or the next day. I just figured I was frustrated/lazy, or too drunk. (at times, all the above lol).
      Sometimes it did help if I didn't already go too far with it, which may or may not go hand in hand with the just stop fiddling with it, stop overworking a problem
      Though, I'm curious, if I walk away and it dries, what do you do to 'rewet' the canvas to continue? I've tried painting atop the dried paint with minimal success and I've tried applying liquid clear with moderate success. (still think I use too much of that shit, I can't see it) 🤷
      oh, and since I just re-watched the video, I did like the tip about loading the brush and testing the application while on the palette. I've done it without realizing I was and it does help to know what my brush is doing before I use it on the canvas.

    • @WildCreates
      @WildCreates  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those blue shop towels are the best.
      When it comes to walking away and re-wetting the canvas there is a trick to it..... You generally want to stop and start at a section that will be easy to rewet ( ie: after you finish the sky and clouds, mountain ranges, ETC). This will make it easy..... DONT do it when you are half way through something like a tree or land... it wont look or blend right.
      Yeah I learned that tip from a CRI private lesson I got when I first started painting. That helps a ton with minimizing mistakes.

(pause for laughter) Sometimes they come out amazing and other times, the are giant gloops (if thats a word) or i use too little paint on the brush and it is more of faint whisper of a bush. I'm going to test a few things out you suggest about testing on the pallet but wanted to ask if you are going to make a video on hills? Hills seem to come out so easy in videos i watch but even if i manage to not make it a giant mix of mud, it looks absolutely nothing like a hill. Perhaps i'm overworking them. At best, its just some lighter and darker areas of color. I haven't been able to find a solid video on how to make hills actually look like hills. thanks

      Let me just say you are very welcome and that the BUSHES ARE THE DEVIL. I still struggle with them. In one of my next videos coming out. I will be talking about getting paint and highlights to stick. I think that video will help you with your bushes for sure.
      Until then, This video here might help you with some issues you might be having with Bloops. It has a ton of tips in it.

      @@WildCreates Thanks! saw it already but watched again... one thing i forgot to mention which virtually no one else does that i super appreciate is the super close up of the brush on the palate. really helps to see how your applying the paint on the brush. keep it up!

      Yeah I want to introduce more angles and close ups, they really help. I feel most artist are nervous to show close up of their art ( they don't want you to see the flaws or imperfections ) NOT ME! We are here to learn and grow together.
      Here is the highlight video that just dropped over the weekend. Give it a peek if you haven't already:

    How do you "re-wet" your painting if you continue a few days later ? (after you wait to tacky up) Love your great tips

      I plan on making a video on this ( cause there is a little to it ) BUT i find it easy to stop at a place you know you can easily continue from (IE mountains, clouds, sky, etc )
      The just take your liquid medium and work it into section you need to paint. Stop with only a little and add as needed. Working in sections is key

    Great tips, thank you. But if you let the painting ‘dry’ for a while, how do you deal with the magic white in unfinished areas? Do you apply it again?

      Yup, you can just re-wet it again with a thin lay of MW (or even liquid clear) OR it still might be wet.... do a small test with your finger and touch it.
      I hope that helps you out.
