  • What lies beneath the layers of paint in an oil painting and how does it affect what we see? In this video, viewers discover the building blocks of an oil painting using master paintings as examples.
    The information in this video is taken from Jill's online oil painting course titled THE OIL PAINTING PROCESS, available through Jill's Website:

    Jill -another excellent video. Most or I can say many viewers of Art never know how a painter starts a painting. It is too bad artists cannot add the cost of preparation of panels to the finished work. This is true as well with other arts. Musicians , sculptors,
    I often joke with clients that if I were to sell the hundreds of works I have created at today mid pricing, I wound not begin to recoup the cost of materials spent over my lifetime. Think of the apprentice years when sales were non existent.
    I read a story of Monet, after gaining fame; at an auction of one of his paintings which went for millions.
    He was asked how he felt seeing the value his painting achieved.
    His reply was to say he felt like a horse winning the triple crown and all gets is the oats. 😃 thanks again for the video.

      Thank you. Yes, I really think it's important for the public to know what's behind what they see. It produces a greater appreciation and even enhances their enjoyment of art! An artist friend and I used to talk about all of the things we do behind the scene that the public isn't aware of, including framing, business matters, etc. You're right - imaging being paid for the labor and business hours? Wow! Love the Monet story - that's great.

    On topic:
    For the past two decades,
    I've been painting with acrylic
    paints and acrylic inks.
    I've become very comfortable using them.
    I love them.
    By chance, a neighbor gifted me a set
    of oil paints that she bought for her
    husband, yet he had no desire to use
    them.
    Though i haven't tried painting with
    that set of oils, i have been buying
    mediums in preparation for when i
    do begin to try oils.
    I had no idea about sizing.
    I now plan to add that to the small
    growing list of preparation elements
    for the oil painting i plan to try.
    Thank you for this information.
    Off topic: your voice is very serene,
    and soothing. Which is much needed
    in these very strange times.

      I'm so glad you found this helpful as you plan to dive into oils, Santiago. It'll be interesting for you to compare the mediums. I always find I gain so much from trying other forms of paint. I may return to my favorite, but the experience teaches me about each one.

      During years 2001 to 2002 I went to Salar Jung museum in hyderbad India almost every weekend. What i did was i tried to understand how these great masters painted.
      I came out with conclusion that the surface they prepared was one of the most important element of their painting. This element is very much overlooked nowadays.

    Much anticipated and now, much enjoyed. Why hasn't canvas been replaced by the latest techniques in paper manufacturing?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it is definitely making inroads. Artists are starting to use oil paper more it seems. I wonder if the buoyant feeling of canvas is part of the attraction? It's also convenient and often not too expensive. But really, mounted oil paper (professional grade paper) is a solid option, I feel. Good question.

    • @UnbeltedSundew
      @UnbeltedSundew 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably for the reasons it was originally used, in that it's easily portable and able to be as large as you want. Plus hundreds of years of history and experience. Canvas is also just tougher than paper. Further paper is highly susceptible to water damage and molds etc.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt

      Hi Helmut - Are you aiming to learn oil painting? If so, you can start with The Oil Painting Process (www.udemy.com/course/the-oil-painting-process/?couponCode=APRIL2022) as it really starts close to the very beginning and walks you through creating an oil painting, physically, step-by-step. If you want to learn watercolor painting, I recommend starting with Foundations for Mastering Watercolor Painting class followed by Mechanics of Watercolor Painting. They were designed to flow that way and will be a nice solid start for you. Then, in both cases, you can proceed to the 2-Part Mastering Brushstrokes course. The other three classes can follow after that. At least, that's how I suggest taking them. As far as a Masters class, I try to incorporate their teaching/observation in all of my classes (less in the Mechanics class), and I've been thinking about creating a new class that follows along with the new You Tube series I released on the Masters' processes: th-cam.com/video/F15JebCy-io/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/4ma7lWOuzQ8/w-d-xo.html

  • @Tooradj

    As always an impressive presentation.
    Can you expand on drying oil ground in modern contest (brands, products,...)? I have been using acrylic Jesso and often have to have a layer of oil paint or acrylic paint on top to reduce absorbency. Are you aware of any modern ground I could use instead that is less absorbant? Any downsides?
    Any thoughts on why Rembrandt used white over dark ground?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regarding Rembrandt, from all of my reading it sounds like his second ground was quite thin and was a gray tone, which if thin enough would allow some of the first ground to show through and create a nice complex color. That would be my assumption. Also, he didn't just use that color combination or ground combination. Most masters would tweak their grounds/colors according to what they were painting, although that seemed to be a common one for him.
      Regarding oil ground, the one I show in the video is the one I use when needed (Gamblin Oil Ground). I like to thin the amount I'm going to apply with a dash of solvent so it can spread nice and thin. Used this way, it will dry enough in one week to paint over (although I sometimes allow more time). But it has to be applied very thinly.
      Another thing you can do is apply oil paint that's been thinned quite a bit and use a rag to rub it into the layer. You don't want to actually remove the paint - just spread it thinly with the rag. The solvent used to thin it plus the thinness of the layer itself will allow it to try within one day usually and should still give you a less absorbent surface. This was called an imprimatura and was used by many masters. Acrylic ground is by nature absorbent, so I'm not sure if another layer of that will give you the resistance you're looking for.
      Does this answer your questions, Daryoosh?

    As an art collector, the tech behind true quality produced art is amazing but over the years I question and wonder how closely these techniques are used today as well as in the past I know that there are many instances where these techniques are not used. I have seen artwork paint flake off, peel away, change color, expensive craquelure Etc...It's something to consider whether artist or collector as with Famous painter Joshua Reynolds 1723 -1792, he experimented with color in his portraitures, He mixed all sorts of stuff with the paints to change them a method that caused great problems with the longevity of his artworks. So artists of any medium of ART who want their art to stand the test of time do the necessary preparation to ensure the longevity of the artwork. Collectors need to be cognizant not just of contemporary art but older works of art for their construction and past restoration storage conditions damage Etc...

    If you were repainting a large old plaster statue using oil paints, would you apply a sizing? I have been thinking I would use an oil paint primer like those used to prep plaster walls (so I guess it would be considered a ground). I’d love any advice you could share.

      Not as far as I'm aware. Here is a link where they list the ingredients of cling paint (for Zimmer).
      www.whatsinproducts.com/types/type_detail/1/19764/standard/div%20id=%22cke_pastebin%22%3EZinsser%20Ceiling%20Paint,%20Paint%20and%20Primer%20In%20One,%20(Color%20Changing),%20Bright%20White,%20Flat-04/13/2017/div%3E/26-002-138
      You can see it includes titanium white, clay, and even talc - all of which could be found in gesso. But it also includes a petroleum-like ingredient, which from my research would make in unsuitable for applying artist's oil paint over top. Of course, if someone out there knows otherwise (with scientific evidence), I'm happy to hear it. There are other ingredients listed there that I would have to research.
      Generally, gesso is made specifically for good adhesion of artist's oil paint.

    8:21 ground yes, but the old masters had a canvas that was not only primed but the surface was high gloss polished. This technique to achieve that for example a canvas of 9ft x12ft is high gloss polished - smooth like glass is mostly forgotten. Modern artists even make their paintings like that the fabric of the canvas shimmers through. An absolute no-go for old masters who painted fine details.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing you mean the finished product was highly polished? They would have issues painting on top of a gesso layer that is highly polished - the paint wouldn't adhere well. And I'm not aware of any artist who did that. If you mean the final product, that is very true that many did that, but that isn't denied in this video. I'm not sure where you're seeing the conflict.

    • @lenny108

      @@JillPoyerdFineArt just like one can polish plaster without applying anything, canvas grounding (primer) that contains chalkware what is a form of plaster can also be polished. It is still priming. Only drawback was that the paintings of old masters got tiny hairline cracks. But rarely the paint fell off.

    Do you think, figuratively speaking, that ARTWORK has more value when it is done in an "isolation" room, where there is no access to visual cue's that can be copied easily from glancing? In other word's, Do you think artwork is more challenging to pull directly from the "mind's eye" and not from the 3d environment using your standard vision?

    Good video but please note that a true gesso is based on animal glue, is brittle and just for rigid panels. Modern acrylic ‘gesso’ should be called primer. Manufacturers use the term ‘gesso’ incorrectly, purely for romantic marketing reasons.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree with your comment on true gesso. I get into that aspect of it in the formal class that I'm creating. But one thing I chose to do after conducting a TON of research is to simplify some of the terms used throughout the art world. There are so many overlapping and even contradictory definitions out there. For the student, regarding gesso, I think it's helpful to call all of the plaster-like base layers a ground, made up of a form of gesso. Otherwise, it gets too confusing. For example, I've read many different definitions from very reliable sources for the term "priming" - the most common being a layer of oil ground...or the entire grouping of base layers. I feel it's time we all simplified things. That's my opinion at least.
