This is also happening to me right now. I'm based in Canada selling a Canadian car. The "buyer" wants a NMVTIS report (US report) and is demanding I go through their website. Some real scummy people in the world
I’ve worked in the automotive industry for years, and have bought and sold many vehicles, and this scam was pretty tough to sniff out the first time. Luckily because I work in the industry I was able to offer a free carfax, and when they declined that and insisted on another site that set off the alarm bells. Very we thought out scam that’s going to trick a lot of inexperienced sellers.
Good comments. I have bought and sold many cars online for years. Two corrections here... 1) The free Carfax report does not tell you ANYTHING. It is worthless. It says 10, 15, 20 reports found. It does not tell you if it has been in an accident or how many owners. To get any real report, you have to pay for the reports!! 2) You are NOT responsible to provide anyone any report when you are selling your car at all!! Let the buyer pay and get their own report. That is what I did when I was buying cars from private owners. I paid to get the reports. Many times I also did NOT buy the cars based on those reports. However you are responsible to provide your vehicle's VIN so the potential buyers can get their own report.
Agreed. What CarFax offers for free is NOT useful or actionable info; it just tells you how many reports/details are on the report. It's still a great site and service (and I think the best one out there) and WELL worth it when you're buying or selling, but don't kid yourself about any of it being free. There is absolutely nothing useful they offer for free.
Yeah I had 4 people contact me about getting a report history for my vehicle. The funny thing is I already have one printed and have one to show the buyer when I see him in person but they still want me to go pay for one on their website. Damn Scammers!!!
Actually i was gonnna give these guys reports from their provided link. Thank god you saved me from this scam. I posted my car on kijiji and all of sudden i’m receiving lot msg from them and one thing common in these people is they would ask for vehicle history report from their specific site
Had some dude try to guilt trip me into buying a report. Printed one from VIN data and sent him the report. Then he was saying "I need it from this website, not the one you used." So I told him "You can buy that one yourself then." And left it at that.
Cheers for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard about - Tarbbatigan Judicious Shopping Tip (google it)? THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! It is currently happening to me right now with two different 'interested buyers' I am so glad I felt the red flag and researched this further. You're right, as soon as you provide the carfax, they stop replying.
thank you very much for information ... too bad it was too late for me ... I fell into that game ....I am sure this video will help many people... national auto reports this is scam
This just happened to us yesterday! The first red flag was the text from an out of country phone number, then he wouldn't accept the carfax report that we have, kept insisting that it be from Autovin. Told him to piss off!
Happened to me today. They said that a money is not a problem just give me a report. They even sent me a direct link for that website. Thank you for a video!!!
A guy tried to do that to me today. He was disrespectful. So of course my intuition was going crazy like red flags. The information he was asking for didn't make sense. I told him my vin is on my profile and he can look that up no problem. He said money ain't a thing, So Im like well go buy you a car then. He also tried to do the guilt trip. I didn't care because he was an idiot and apparently thought I was too. 😂😂😂😂 he said he was looking to buy a car in 10 days, had to talk to his boss about getting a day off. Usually people who have money don't need to do that. He also came with something about a ride and his cousin and coming all the way down Nd cash money. It was dumb.
Woooow someone literally messaged me today about my car!! Same exact story!! Sold his car last week, need one in less than 10 days cash ain’t no problem,
This is literally happening to me right now! So glad I found this video. I sent a guy a carfax report on my car, which is obviously the most common and legit report for vehicles. He said his mom wanted me to do a check from a different website. NOPE!!!

Selling my bike. 5 Scams so far. All the same - set up meet time and ask for vehicle history report from some strange source. Easy to spot. Also phone numbers often have area codes 1000's miles distant from you.
It seems like now, 5 years later, all three of the sites you recommended charge quite a bit. I still would trust one of them before other sites but gone are the "free" days.
My first time selling one of my cars online this week and the first person that messaged me on facebook tried to scam me with this method. They "couldn't get the VIN report because they have the 5k in cash in hand and need me to get it for them before they come buy the car." 🤣
You already made the right first move, shutting down your credit card. You might consider going to www.annualcreditreport.com and get your free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) to check for any errors or unusual accounts.
I havent sold a car in while, but am glad i did my homework. I just posted an ad for my car on CL and the amount of these requests is ridiculous. Thanks for the video!

This scam is still going on. I listed a motorcycle on kijiji and had 3 different people ask for vehicle reports from 3 different web sites. I didn’t look up the sites but did waste about 2 hours of each one’s day messing with them. It is Sunday and I had nothing better to do. Amazing how defensive a scammer gets when you call them scammers. Fun way to spend a day.
Almost got taken to the cleaner on this one. It's been a while since we sold a vehicle on Craigslist and I wasn't aware this was happening. The broken English in the e-mails and text messages were also a giveaway. Glad I listened to my instincts.
