Sheet management and stick control is key--you are right that focusing on boat control and keeping stick and sheet relatively stable (and not getting distracted on getting in and out) is key. Else the stick and sheet move with your movements and it messes up control. Sheet management is clear as you control it with your stick hand and keep it uncleated. Bravo!
It's an Instamic - either connect by Bluetooth or record onto it's own internal memory - under the shirt for no wind noise. Totally waterproof - It's like they made it especially for me! Yahtzee!

For me, the thing I need to monitor while going in and out of trapezing is rope management. In gusty winds, I need to be ready for a gust when changing positions and not fumbling around untangling myself or pulling it out from underneath me. Another thing for people new at this is to make sure that the trap wire is beside you and not between your legs, something I've done a few times...lol, not good. It took me a while to get used to going out without grabbing the handle. You make it look easy and natural Joe but getting that balance took a bunch of dry runs on land. It definitely gives you more control over the main sheet. One little thing I've been practicing is starting a tack while coming in from the trapeze. It is natural to turn the rudders in while coming in and makes a very quick tack if you can time it right.
Yes, the tack from the wire, when you get a good one is very satisfying. I was going to go through the 'clamping' technique so that it doesn't have to be hands free - it got a bit too windy so i had to stick with the trusted method.
It's nice to see somebody actually hiking out on a cat. It's tough physically, but it's the all-around in-between position for when the wind isn't steady enough to trap. I rarely see anybody do it. Easier to hang from a wire I guess, even when it's not the best position.

I remember going out once at Wildwind with the explicit plan to practice going in and out of helm trapeze. I took an FX One (cannot capsize onto you like a Hobie 16), and then went in and out, in and out, until that was fully automated, at least 50 times.
Hey dude, It's been a long time! What i'm dong is putting the mic in a modified lycra headband which i'm putting around my neck, that then goes under a rash vest. Great quality. I'm using the mic as a standalone recorder - i use the phone app to get it rolling and check the level. Rather than trying to use the bluetooth with the camera which didn't seem quite as reliable.

This is really helpful to watch. May I ask, is it different for a boat where the trampoline is flush with the hulls such as on a H18? I'm worried about my butt dragging in the water as I move out. Is it all about having the windward hull elevated to allow space to commit to the trapeze? Perhaps I'm just unaware of the space I actually have.

Hi Joe, keen for your advice for heavier skippers. I’m 6’7” and 130 kg, so as you can imagine I have to be very conscious of my movement as it impacts on the balance of the boat. Most of you video you are either on trap or hiking. In my case myself moving onto trap is like both crews both stepping onto the trap at the same time, which is easy when the wind is up. But in those in between conditions it’s not always feasible to go out on trap but not. Optimal to stay hiking either. How would you suggest dealing with that.(oh I’m also well on the way to 60 and the knees aren’t quite what they used to be)
It kind of depends on what type of boat you are sailing. What ever it is, when you get to the hooked in hiking position, try to be trimmed forward or back so that the boat feels level, after that easiest is probably going to be using the 'clamping' technique - so that you can use your back hand to help you moving out. Getting comfortable in the hiking position, feeling under control with the power on an upwind or close reach course is going to be the first main step.

Hi from Switzerland, I wanted to ask about the trimming of the battens of the main sail (we got a new one). First, we had them really tight but then noticed that the main sail would not fill properly, to the point it will not go to the other side after turning in low wind conditions. Then we losened the battens a bit but still we are unsure under what conditions we should have it more lose or more tight. The main sail rarely get the full pressure no matter what in the area of the lower 3 battens (it is not "filled" properly"). Could you give some advice on the proper settings of the battens? Right now the white part of the battens sticks out around 1cm on most battens but sometimes I see videos where they are much loser (2-4cm out)... Edit Hobie 16
You just need to know that you have to tighten the battens when there is not a lot of wind, and just fasten them when there is a lot of wind. To make them pop pull on the downhaul and or wiggle with the boom
The question Joe would also ask: which boat type? On a Hobie 16 or 14, the batten tension plays a larger role (citing Joe here), as the Dacron-sail with horizontal strips has not much inherent shape, unlike e.g. Formula 18-cats like the Hobie Tiger or the C2 where the belly is "tailored" in the vertical diamond cut of the sail. On my Hobie Tiger I have (esp. the top) battens in so losely that they just do not slip out of the pocket (and poke through the sail), simply because it is such a nuisance to fight with the battens in each maneuver. I am from Bavaria (Starnberger See near Munich), I could imagine that you have the same issues like on our lake, very often very little wind (or too much). Batten tensionwise, I would come from the handling side (what causes the least handling problems) and from that point think about whether you lose power/speed because of too little tension/sail belly. E.g. since one or two years Joe cut off the batten of the Hobie 16-jib, so that the battens are now flush with the leech; in that manner the battens do not get caught anymore on the jib halyard at the front of the mast all the time. A revelation (not really class legal, but who cares?), especially when you solo a Hobie 16. I am just on the go for my usual 3 weeks at Wildwind. I'm doing that since Joe came there and was still Little Joe, since 1994...

It was assisted hiking! I wouldn't generally trust the toe straps that much if they are stitched to the tramp!

This is with a Microphone called Instamic. Yes, I still had the audio from the camera available so I could try dealing in a bit of ambience.
