The Spiritual Life Is a Battle - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, our first reading for this Sunday is about a battle between Israel and the Amalekites. To many of us today, this appears to be either an irrelevancy of history or an outrageous story about God sanctioning genocide. But Origen of Alexandria helps us to see that it is neither; rather, it is a story about the battle of the spiritual life. And in the soldiers, Moses, and Aaron and Hur, we see the variegated offices and functions within the Church engaged in that battle.

Through prayer, my mother-in-law, now in her nineties, has sustained my family for a quarter of a century. Her childlike faith and commitment to incessant prayer gives her dignity and power. There's no question she's blessed us beyond anything we can fully perceive. If I give the battle, she's holding my arms. Blessed is she.

In college, I was part of the Antioch Weekend retreat team. Whenever one of the team members was giving a talk to the people attending the weekend, another team member would be in another room, praying with their arms raised. I would always end up sitting on the floor between two chairs to support my arms. Most of the talks ran about 45 minutes. Even though my Dad and two of his brothers were barbers, I had no genetic predisposition toward holding my arms up for that long.

As I spend more time seeking God and learning through His many gifts to me, I am often struck with how powerful He weaves the threads of my journey. I listened to this podcast and then moved on to the scripture assigned for this week by the "What We Believe" course our parish is conducting. Corinthians 12 27-31; "Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the church to be, first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then mighty deeds;..." "Are all apostles" Are all prophets?..." "Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts." We all have a role to play in this battle.

They had my house watched and had my activities around town monitored, they abused me psychologically, they destroyed my friendships, they prevented my growth in any career, they assigned me to hard labor which permanently damaged my leg, they broke up my family, destroyed my reputation, tried to kill my religious vocation, broke my heart, tore my soul, and sold me for money. Yet, I tried to teach them, feed them, minister to them, and walk with them because they were my own people.

His life, His teachings, His crucifixion on the cross, and His ultimate resurrection are our only hope, only salvation, our everything! As He was hated, publically shamed, and beat to death, why should we not be? It all comes with the territory as disciples of Jesus. Hallelujah for that! And, we give Him all of the honor, praise, worship, and glory! Amen!

I love this verse in Exodus, and also that Aaron and Hur coming along side reflects [IMO] "When two or more of you are gathered in my name…" Also Hur's grandson is later 'art director' or 'project manager' of carrying out God's design in the Temple in Exodus 31.
    Bezalel and Oholiab
"The Lord spoke to Moses: 'See, I have called by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: and I have filled him with divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, in every kind of craft. Moreover, I have appointed with him Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have given skill to all the skilful, so that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, and the ark of the covenant,[b] and the mercy-seat[c] that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt-offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, and the finely worked vestments, the holy vestments for the priest Aaron and the vestments of his sons, for their service as priests, and the anointing-oil and the fragrant incense for the holy place. They shall do just as I have commanded you.' "

Great reminder of the diversity of skills within the Church, also applies to Society as a whole - the great divider is at work.

Pray without ceasing with outstretched arms and God will answer our prayers. Thank you Bishop Barron for your insight into the Scriptures. I would not have understood the implications of out stretched arms in prayer without your help. When I pray the Rosary I pray with outstretched arms at least 2 decades

I appreciate this. I would say that I am directly involved in dealing with spiritual battle. I don't want to give up, because if I am not running towards God, then I am spinning my wheels in the mud or I am being pushed away or running away.

I believe and submit to the authority of the Church because it teaches me to submit to the Authority of Jesus rather than my own selfish authority.
I believe Jesus is my King and I NEED the Pope, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Religious to help me make sure I am connected to the True doctrine of Christ for Unity within the Church.

I am a veteran, and many people tell me…” thank you for your service.” Father, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!” I always thank the priests at my parish, too. You and they are very important to our country and for the whole world! You and the priesthood and the Protestant clergy are in an never ending war. You are a soldier, like I once was, and you are in an never ending war. Thank you for your service!

Greatly appreciated the deep insights from your message, Bishop Baron. One detail that you did not have time to mention was that Hur and Aaron provided Moses a stone to rest on. In recognizing that our spiritual leaders have human limitations and frailties, it is an encouragement for them to be reminded to take their rest on "Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone" as well as discovering God's grace working through some of the flock ready to share some of the burden of ministry with them. This is of course true of the church leadership, but is also true as each of us struggle with our own battles. We need each other, or, as Scripture instructs us so well, "Bear one anothers' burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."
