I work for a small, local brewery. I just asked the production guys if we had any damaged kegs and we had about 12 that were unable in the market. So you can easily go to a local brewery and ask about damaged kegs and pay cash and even pick up a few different sizes.
Great channel. Great content as well. The keg clean and press is an exercise I see at lot of people struggle with. Would you do a video about technique and accessory movement to improve this event? Maybe throw something in about the Bartos Keg since most competitions use that keg when there is a keg event.
I’ll be honest.. not sure what it’s like in the US but kegs are often left out back of pubs for hours at a time in the U.K.. And 1 or 2 may have rolled my way over the years..
I cut a gallon in half to use as a funnel to pour the old beer into another gallon. Then I poured four cups of sanitary bleach and diluted it with two gallons water. Caped it and shook it up. Going to let it sit over night. Then shake it up in the morning and let it sit another day upside down. Then I'll dump it all out, let it drip over night. Then flip it back over and let it sit until it's all evaporated. The two inch end cap he shows is the exact one they have at Home Depot.
wish I would have thought for 5 minutes before blindly following your instructions. my core was a different style and when I drove my screwdriver into it it screwed up the threads making it almost impossible to remove. had to cut it out with a Dremel. but thanks for the video still helpful!
Thanks for the video. Could you do (or recommend) a video on training/programming with kegs and possibly a tutorial on the basic lifts/movements with a keg? The video you did on lifting the atlas stones was excellent!
Yea man, I am planning on making one of those but the strongman stuff gets less views than anything on my channel. So I only do them so often. But I will definitely add that to my list of videos I want to make!
Brian Alsruhe Thanks for the reply. It's a shame the strongman doesn't get the attention. I'll keep a look out for the video in the future. I gotta say I really enjoy the style of your videos and your content is always top notch.
Hi what is your opinion , 5 gallon bucket with a lid filled with sand and water, would you get similar results then using a keg. I am having trouble finding a keg so would a 5 gallon bucket do the work until I find one? Thanks
It will probably be heavier. I have a 30 L keg filled with water. Filled to the brim, it weights 43kg. With sand, you should be looking for something closer to 60kg.
Currently getting all the equipment together and building my own stuff to start my Strongman style workouts. I don’t plan on ever competing I’ve just been lifting weights for 12 years and have really just gotten bored of the standard Olympic lifts in the gym. Any recommendations for a guy who’s decently strong transitioning to strongman style lifting? Thanks! Bench- 315 Squat- 515 Deadlift- 565 (Putting PR’s to show I’m not a newbie in the gym)
Hahah i actually saw a guy in my 3rd comp do that very thing after it bounced off the bar. Then he did it again and it hit him in the head. But it was amazing when he caught it!
So I'm just wondering, since kegs are harder to come by... I was thinking of buying small plastic or metal barrels in the 15 gallon range instead of kegs. They'd be lighter, but cheaper, and I'm wondering if the dimensions would still work for strongman. I feel like they would....what do you think?
Good stuff! Can you talk about your nutrition and supplements? You've got an amazing physique, we can see your workouts, but what does it take to fuel that body? Would love to hear more about how much you eat and what exactly, which supplements you take and so on.
+stiffsailor Sure man, but it is more basic than you would believe. I really mainly eat things that had a Mom or grew out of the ground. I make sure I get LOTS of healthy fats and try to hit around 250 grams of protein a day, but I never have, nor never will, count calories. For supplements, I use Protein Powder, Have tried creatine with mixed results, use fish oil and now I just started using pre-workout because BPI Sports sent me a free container of it. Thats basically it. Like i said, it's not too interesting...If you want a more in-depth look, I have written a lot about my diet on my training log. The link to it is in the description. Thanks for asking man!
Stan Efferding says if you eat a lot of red meat that creatine won't do anything for you. But if you don't eat red meat, it will. I get most of my protein from eggs (I have about 30 hens), and notice a difference when I take creatine. I've only used Kre-Alkalyn brand creatine, so I can't comment on any other brands. If you switch up your protein sources, creatine might help you on non-red meat days. I hope that helps someone make some sense out of their diet+supplements.
I know this is an older video, so may not get a response, but I was wondering how you go about making sure it's balanced? Say you're making up a lighter keg to learn the movements, but still have some weight, but doing so would only fill the keg halfway up with sand. Or do kegs usually have whatever's inside free to move around, and the movement is part of the lift?
How do you fit BJJ into your workout routine? I used to training BJJ 5-6 times a week, but never lift weights. Its been years since I've trained BJJ. I wouldn't know how to fit in BJJ and strength and conditioning without it effecting my lifts.
Honestly, when I am rolling a lot (5-6x a week) it replaces my conditioning and I do less assistance work. I honestly can't find the time to focus on both 100%. Maybe I can now that I have my own gym but I won't really go back to rolling a lot until after Nationals and Maryland's strongest man. Can't afford t get hurt right now
Awesome, that make sense. I bet you're a beast at BJJ. Most guys in BJJ don't strength train, I've always wondered how much it would improve my BJJ. Thanks for the reply!
It has definitely helped man! I think the key is to continue training BJJ while getting bigger and stronger. That way you grow into techniques as you grow into your body and don't slow down or get clumsier. At least that worked for me!
For lead just say its toxic to skin so wear glove unless like you said "you want eyes". Also I work at a brewery and the only reason I'm seeing this video is because our welder is making a bunch of 14in comp kegs as well as full sized kegs for heavier trainers.
Hahaha people say that but I swear to you it is from heavy rows, presses and weighted pull-ups. I am going to show a picture of me when i was 15 after training for 2 years (in an upcoming video) and you are going to laugh
Wish I rewatched this video last weekend when I filled a keg… got a big face/eyes full of old nasty beer when I went to release the pressure… common sense is not my strong suite… lol
Trust in Jesus he died for your sins, believe the gospel. Repent!!! If you do sin confess your sins, ask him to help you overcome your sins he will. Obey Jesus live by his teachings be lead by the Holy Spirit the Lord is coming soon you must live by his teachings. The love of God is beyond our understanding God bless
Wait for college kids to throw keg party, wait for them to pass out, steal keg, have keg
I borrowed mine from the backside of a restaurant in savannah GA
*tactically aquire
They're gonna be so hammered, probably not even remember there was a keg there in the first place
Awesome tutorial on making a strongman keg! Just set up my first one.

Love this guy!! Awesome knowledge and helpful hints on general lifting and health. Would be great to meet this guy someday!!
Hey brother! John just told me you are making videos now! Great content man!
+Max Major Thanks brother! I need to make it out to one of your shows!
really good how to fill a keg video. thanks. love to see strongman circuts on here

Legit made me laugh out loud this vid. Well played sir

Thanks so much man! And don't worry, there will always be strongman related content every few videos on this channel!
Thanks for the info. Great tutorial!

Thanx,Big Guy
Thanks brother!
such a good tutorial man thank you
very helpful thank you!
What is that net thing in 0:31 and where can I get one?
Not saying everyone’s going to find it, but plenty of Kegs on Offer up
Thank you for making this !
If my research is correct a 30 Litre keg filled with clean sand would weigh about 50 kgs = 110 pounds.
Regards
It will probably be heavier. I have a 30 L keg filled with water. Filled to the brim, it weights 43kg. With sand, you should be looking for something closer to 60kg.
How would you train for keg toss if you dont have a keg to use
There is a lot of Pressure in those Kegs when you first get your hands on them!
Can I use a metal barrel similar to a keg just more longer and a bit wider
So can we still use liquid for that different oscillating effect it has
Where can I buy steel shot??
I missed step 1 and almost had my face blown off by the valve
Found plenty of kegs on offer up!

Compete bro
metal asf bro
I'd love to see you go to the cross fit games just for kicks
is he using a ten gallon keg?
wasnt paying close attention to the intro and thought you threw the keg in the air and caught it, was seriously impressed for a second hahaha
Hahah i actually saw a guy in my 3rd comp do that very thing after it bounced off the bar. Then he did it again and it hit him in the head. But it was amazing when he caught it!
Making one now thanks
you might also be able to find them on craigslist.

Matthew Montgomery just buy a plastic barrel, theyre big, akward and even filled with just water get well over 250lbs
Also sand is cheap and well balanced. $4 a bag at Lowe’s
Just got one from my neighbor. It had just been sitting in his yard since before he bought it.

Great tip man, thanks for sharing!
Be a firefighter and take them from the firehouse.
In Romania we use a bag with corn !
Compleyely glosses over the hardest bit, getting the shim out lol
ok next playlist lol
Why so many laws regarding metal barrels? So weird.
I think the companies who own the kegs are a monopoly, so they can pretty much make the rules
Ah so it's the inherent flaws of the monetary system again. Lol go figure.
Hahaha indeed.
+Brian Alsruhe Have you seen the zietgiest films then?
Nope man, can't say i have

I know I'm 5 months late but I'd say embrace the imbalance! It provides its own challenge and you can fill up more the strongest you get.
I would have salvaged that beer, get it nice n cold good as new
Amazon has kegs for $140
venum fight gear, do you do martial arts also?
Yea man, my background is in MMA but I try not to get hit in the head anymore so i just do BJJ now
How do you fit BJJ into your workout routine? I used to training BJJ 5-6 times a week, but never lift weights. Its been years since I've trained BJJ. I wouldn't know how to fit in BJJ and strength and conditioning without it effecting my lifts.

Brian, i managed to get my hands on a keg, and I would really appreciate a video on how to work with it. Whatcha think?
thanks,
Nathaniel
Sure man, which movements were you trying to do with it?
Pick it up, put it down lol
How tall are you?
6 foot
So how much can you expect to pay for one?
Do they make any with handles on both ends?
justvettn in my country deposit makes like 2/3 of price of the beer in it...so for ex. 70$ for beer + another 50$ for keg
For lead just say its toxic to skin so wear glove unless like you said "you want eyes". Also I work at a brewery and the only reason I'm seeing this video is because our welder is making a bunch of 14in comp kegs as well as full sized kegs for heavier trainers.
Every keg I’ve weighed is about 33lbs
If you contact your area breweries they may be willing to part with damaged empties
Check craigslist, just looked up my local one and found 4 different people within 50 miles selling them for 30 to 40.
I bought two kegs for $15 on OfferUp
monstrous arms and no direct arm work? i guess you were pretty huge and strong before even touching the barbell right?:P
Hahaha people say that but I swear to you it is from heavy rows, presses and weighted pull-ups. I am going to show a picture of me when i was 15 after training for 2 years (in an upcoming video) and you are going to laugh
i just assumed that you have some kind of superior genetics😀, so it must be those rows then !
Nah man, i am very average, I just have stayed at it longer than most people
Wish I rewatched this video last weekend when I filled a keg… got a big face/eyes full of old nasty beer when I went to release the pressure… common sense is not my strong suite… lol
Hahah

A little disappointed with this how to video. I thought you were a little more extreme than that, how about gunpowder seems like a fitting option! 🚀💣🔥
+John Norris Hahahaha noted. I'll see what I can do.
Thumbs up for paramore lol
