    Very well done. My father gave me a Speedy in March of 69. Fifty-one years ago, four months before Apollo II. I still wear it every day. I hope you get a lifetime of satisfaction from yours as I have from mine.

    Thanks for the review, Wyatt. That was really nicely done. I have had the Moonwatch with Hesalite crystal and steel back for 12 years now. It's been serviced by Omega twice in that time and runs at +4 seconds a day which is great for this type of watch. It's only been off my wrist for half an hour a day the whole time I've owed it for showering. I sleep with it on I find it so comfortable. I work in construction and whilst may seem crazy that I wear it to work it has held up extremely well aesthetically and I can just buff out any scratches on the crystal with some fine polish and a soft cloth. I can't recommend the Speedmaster highly enough.
    I went with the original as I wanted the same configuration that NASA still uses today but your sapphire sandwich model is stunning. Again thanks for making such a high quality review and I really enjoyed seeing the slow motion reset too.

      My six-year-old Speedmaster was just serviced and runs in about four seconds a day also. My Hundred $50 Orient I've never been serviced and runs at about two seconds a day. It also gets more compliments from people outside the watch world... Still love the Speedmaster, of course! It's for me after all!

    Lol, 316l is NOT softer. If anything, it's the other way around. What makes 904l twice as expensive (and we're talking about a couple of dollars per kilogram here, it's not a fine/noble metal) is the fact that it is more resistant to corrosion., because it contains more nickel than 316l.

    • @PowerSpartanl99Prod

      +Noraddin Ghafel It also looks better. That's the main reason why Rolex uses it.

    • @SomeTenth
      @SomeTenth 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of what you said is true, but I'd say the main reason 904L is so expensive is because it's not as machinable and malleable as 316L.

    • @pacovl46
      @pacovl46 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason 904 looks better is because it can be polished to a mirror finish.

    3:39, the clasp on my Speedy also got pretty badly scratched. Use the miracle that is Scotch Brite. Buff the clasp, vertically only, with the Scotch Brite for just a few minutes and you'll end up with a flawless, scratch free, clasp... Don't worry, the engraving won't come off. I was considering buying a new clasp before I tried this. I do it every few months and the clasp looks brand new. Never use it on the mirrored parts of the strap though.

    One correction for the video - the movement isn't Inhouse, it's a lemania made movement, same as other companies e.g Breitling used to use :)

I didn't know that you could stop the second had to sync it up properly, thanks for that tip !

  • @janos.770
    @janos.770 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicely done video. For Speedmaster Pro, one of the best on TH-cam actually. Two things though: (1) as already pointed out, the movement is made by Lemania. This factory belongs to Breguet now, which is one of the finest watch brand out there. So no Omega in-house. Being in-house is just a current fetish that is completely pointless but people tend to be very specific when comes down to it. (2) 904L Steel used by Rolex is not harder than 316L used by Omega (and other many producers). The opposite is true, 316L is harder. Steel used by Rolex is more expensive, more corrosion resistant, harder to work with and more allergic, but not harder. People tend to say that their Rolexes are picking less scratches. I have no Rolex, so cannot confirm. 904L is softer (just a tad) but it is also much harder to work with - which means that it is much harder to put a nice edge or create a shape - hence, scratches, even if a tad deeper, can be less visible because the micro edges are not so sharp.

    • @WyattHanna
      @WyattHanna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barton Simps Thank you for this insight. My father has a Rolex Sea Dweller and I have noticed that it seems to have picked up fewer prominent scratches than my Speedmaster has. We both got our watches around the same time, and seem to wear them a similar amount. As to the scratches, what you mentioned seems to be the case. The Speedmaster has several noticeable scratches while the Rolex appears to pick up less visible marks that combine to form a scuff. The wear on the Rolex is more localized, but this may all be due to differences in how we wear our watches.

    • @jaime4022
      @jaime4022 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Barton Simps Being in-house is neither a fetish nor completely pointless, as you say. While it might not hold the relevance some people might give it, it does hold some relevance in certain aspects, especially when you are paying thousands of dollars for a watch. Who wants to pay 10,000 dollars for a watch with a movement usually seen on watches under 500. That being said, even the likes of Patek and VC outsource movements to no shame. These movements, however, come from companies such as JLC, not ETA. There is nothing wrong with ETA movements, but when spending thousands of dollars on a watch, some people want something more special. The movement herein is a very solid, special and historic movement, in a historical watch and the fact that it is not in-house does not nullify the value and worthiness of this amazing watch.

    Good review and a nice watch. These watches are not COSC certified, so you can't expect the same accuracy as you get from certified chronometre. Still, if you wear the watch daily and hold your iPhone in the other hand, so watch doesn't get magnetized, it should be OK without servicing for a few years. The clasp scratches can polish out easily with the use of Cape Cod polishing cloth.

    Just to be clear, this 'sapphire sandwich' is model 3573.50.00, right? Or is it the newer one 311.30.42.30.01.006?

    Thanks for this great review. I bought my first speedmaster a few days ago, the 35705000 (1861 movement, solid back, hesalyte). It's a great watch. My only concern is that i have some trouble winding it. I feel like the crown is hard to grab and turn, not easy at all. I think i'm going to visit the service to have it checked but I wonder what you think about it. Thanks!

    • @WyattHanna
      @WyattHanna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Manuel Diaz It does take some force to turn the crown since you're compressing the mainspring which stores quite a bit of energy. I find the watch is easiest to wind by sliding my finger downward underneath the crown. This makes it so you don't have to pinch the crown and twist it (which I find difficult as well).

  • @richpaul6853
    @richpaul6853 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is not an in-house movement. The 1861 manual-wind movement is based on a Lemania chronograph movement. Lemania is now Manufacture Breguet. So technically it uses a Breguet movement which is really ancient in design. It beats slowly at 21,600 bph which shows up when the chronograph second hand moves. It doesn't move smoothly like a modern day chronograph. It doesn't hack which means accurately setting the time to the second is impossible. It doesn't use the more advance column wheel design. So in effect we're talking about an inferior movement. Omega does put a far superior in-house movement in other models of this watch. A movement that is co-axial. But those watches are much more expensive.

    • @daffidavit
      @daffidavit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      But doesn't the Lemania movement give it some the the Patek heretage? The Patek people designed the Lemania (sp) movement, didn't they?

    What is the current price range new and used for this model as of August, 2015...
    Or if you offered that watch for sale-

    • @WyattHanna
      @WyattHanna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Finn Green The price of a new model varies based on whether a seller is an official Omega dealer. You can pick up a new Speedmaster on Amazon for $4,200.00 but Omega doesn't recognize that as an official sale. From an authorized dealer they cost a few hundred more. I got mine online from Feldmar Watch Company which is an authorized dealer.
      If I were to sell mine it would probably go for at least $3,000 but there are quite a few speedys in good condition on eBay that go for a bit over $2,000

      +Felice Sarubbi It seems to me that the Speedmaster is a more unusual watch than the Carrera, and I really enjoy the watch's history with the Apollo program. I also slightly prefer the aesthetics of the Speedmaster over the TAG Heuer, but a lot of the decision comes down to personal preference.

    too big for me.
    Regards
    Adeel

      +Adeel Ali Shah It looks like my wrist size is 6.5 to 6.75 inches, and this watch doesn't seem too large for me. I hope this helps!

    Is there a speed master that shows the date/month?

    • @kaypee1972
      @kaypee1972 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hajduk there is a day date and triple date. (Not produced anymore). They’re speedmasters but differ from the moon watch/ Professional: Other movement (automatic) and other dial set up -> makes the triple date a little difficult to read. Nice, but different

    Have they any water resistance?

  • @Titaniacs

    Theres just something not quite right about the sapphire crystal version, but I suppose that it offers modern durability. It doesn't bother me as much as the case back. I don't think the movement is worthy of a case back.

    Oh god that water was close.

      Mattia T It was, but Speedmasters are water resistant to 50 meters just in case.

      Wyatt Hanna be that as it may i don't even take my speedy int the bathroom during a shower or anything that isnt a dive watch they really aren't water resistant much at all, just in case you're washing your hands or something and it takes a small dip

      I just shower with mine on. No problem at all. Now a year long. I guess mine is waterproof :-)

      +Mattia “Mattod” Its not the water that concerns me, its the stone and hard rough surfaces that I sometimes see watches being displayed on. One slip and the nice patina of normal wear could be overwhelmed by an ugly scratch or ding.

      Taking this into the water is a bad idea. Chrono graphs period are bad in the water but push buttons are a BIG no no.

    Is this model still made? With the display case back I mean

      It is.. but if you're going for a Speedmaster you should probably go with the engraved back and hesalite crystal. Hesalite looks better in person than the sapphire. Much warmer feel. Not to mention cheaper (up front and in replacement). All the hoopla regarding the scratching of Hesalite is greatly exaggerated. Even if it does get scratched, you can buff it out in 10 seconds flat.

      +Johan Larsson I got mine off of Amazon from the following link. The exact color that I have doesn't seem to be currently available, but here is the strap in red. The quality is fair, but considering the price it is pretty good.
