- After weeks of debate, NASA has ruled out bringing two astronauts back to Earth aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule because of lingering concerns about multiple helium leaks and degraded thrusters, both critical to a successful re-entry, officials said Saturday.

6 months to wait to get rescued is crazy
Don’t worry, in 1969 America landed humans on the moon and planted their flag. Surely 55 years later America can’t have an issue returning a couple astronauts from the Space station. I would start begging the Russians for help regarding this situation. I guess we have our answer, more important to abandon 2 US citizens in Space than to beg Vladimir Putin for help.
The crew dragon will head up way before that with supplies, they just have to do the jobs of the astronauts of the seats they are taking before they can ride home.

💯
DEI is their priority. This is diversity.
Less woth NASA but agreed. At the same time though this is exactly why NASA wanted multiple crew ready systems in place. To imprve on safety and allow for unknown situations to be handled like this, unlike when they were flying the shuttle where damage to a ship basically meant loss of the crew vs just sending another ship up. They had the capability with the shuttle but it was such an undertaking vs the setup that SpaceX uses when it comes to turn around time of their flight hardware.
Their core value is safety of their stock price which is why this conference took place (again) on a Saturday when the markets are closed.

To bad this situation wasn't part of the program earlier. Three space programs and no one thought about interchangable safety equipment.
Boeing and NASA thought they were above SpaceX to make their spacesuits interchangeable
That's how NASA has done it for years. At least going back to the 60s. That's why Apollo 13 the CO2 scrubbers on the LEM were different from the ones on the command module.
Does anything sound familiar here? Square co2 scrubbers vs. round co2 scrubbers? It has NOT been just 3 space programs, it has been ALL of them!
This clearly demonstrates how far behind we are in the space program. 55 years ago we put a man on the moon and now we can't even get astronauts back from the space station if something goes wrong.

NASA no longer builds space crafts because the government decided it would be cheaper to let other companies compete to do it. This is what "cheaper" looks like. Glad NASA is still enforcing safety protocols.
The difference here is that NASA puts safety first while Boeing puts profits first at the expense of safety.

Suni and Butch are NOT lost in space as the media has sometimes stated. But the psychological-emotional impact in adapting to this unexpected challenge can be addressed in a uniquely uplifting way. NASA should consider coordinating a Livestream Educational Event with they and young future astronaut teens across the planet. The media spin has been negative when this situation can actually prompt a positive - not just for the many worldwide youth whose space career aspirations are being now fuelled with concerns / questions, but for Butch and Suni's morale and sense of purpose by engaging with more than just their personal family members ... but the young members of their earthly human family hungering for understanding. Technical work alone will not sustain a human being in space. Human beings need integration with their earthly teammates in ongoing, meaningful ways.
Butch and Sunny need to have a little fun and get it on because there are no guarantees they make it out of this alive.
Retiring the Space Shuttle was a huge mistake.
Yep
It wasn't. The Shuttle was just too expensive to maintain and too risky for a crew rated spacecraft.
NASA gave it a 1/98 chance of failure/loss of crew themselves which is definitely too risky for our current safety standards. Both Soyuz and Crew Dragon are likely much safer due to the LES and them being launched on rockets that has much better track records than the Space Shuttle.
Boeing also owns half of SLS & ULA..... but America hates SpaceX....
Consider this too. Boing is a major contractor for the Air Force. A very large number of planes came from them, when quality was still a thing. If their quality has degraded so much, I'd think the government would be considering replacing them with one of the other aerospace companies out there.

So there is no rescue plan to get people off the iss in the event of an emergency??
There is but they don't want to have to ask Elon for help.
Boeing also owns half of SLS & ULA..... but America hates SpaceX....
Dragon can hold 7 people...
There is always a Soyuz capsule docked into the ISS, considering it is the generalized 'emergency' capsule it makes sense, however this isn't emergency there is no reason to use it.
(But yeah when there are more people on the ISS that capsule might not be available, a scenario like that is unlikely but in such an emergency NASA was willing to use the Starliner capsule if it had been the best remaining option.)
"We're building the plane while we're flying it."
Why February? Seems like there MUST be a way to bring folks back from Space within a very short time. What if a station had a serious failure that threatened life of a crew and they needed rescue, NOW and not 8 months after the fact.
They don't want to call on Elon and Biden has irritated Russia.
The reason why they're there is to test the Starliner to see if it's safe to use. But if there was a real emergency, they could get back on a Russian space capsule or a similar vehicle by SpaceX that are already there and functioning.
They said they're going to vote trump so biden ask them to sray there
Most likely is that SpaceX needs to adjust the interior of Dragon to accommodate the additional personnel. Also, it's likely they'll send up supplies as well to replenish what has to be used by the extra 2.
