    Nancy has more care for Maya in The Final Scene than she does for Bess in Ransom of the Seven Ships.
    Idk how they messed that up.

    • @GraemeCree
      @GraemeCree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because Nancy gets so wrapped up in mysteries that she shuts everything else out. The way she acts in Ransom is typical. It's Final Scene that's atypical, maybe because the danger to Maya was immediate, while with Bess, she probably figured it would all be okay in the end.

    What frustrated me about "Tomb of the Lost Queen" is that I think it has a lot of elements that could have made it a really good game - it gave me the same feeling I had when I first played "Secret of the Scarlet Hand", which is one of my favorite games. Puzzles with a historical feeling, getting really immersed into the setting, getting the feeling you're headed towards a big historical revelation. The problem with "Tomb" is it didn't tie in the modern mystery angle with the historical angle. It's more of an archeological puzzle game than a mystery game.
    I think it's really hindered by the opening. The game starts and immediately a character you don't know is found unconscious, you're told that it's foul play, then immediately have a conversation with Lily that abruptly diverts into you playing a board game for 5 minutes to teach you symbols that you will not encounter again for 15+ hours. That's just bad pacing.
    If there had been a slow build like in "Scarlet Hand", I think "Tomb" could have easily been a mid- to upper-tier game. Nancy's there to assist on the dig site, so let the first hour be that. For the first hour, you meet John and all the other characters (no withholding Jamila and Dylan until the tomb is opened), get familiar with the dig site, and do a couple of basic tasks to help John and Lily. At the same time, John confides that he suspects there's something sinister happening - he thinks someone is tampering with the site. While talking to each suspect, you get the impression that they each have motivation to meddle with the dig site - profit, gaining credibility, professional acclaim, etc.
    Then Nancy opens up the first tomb, all the characters gather in to see, the curse on the wall is read out, then soon after John is found unconscious. Now his attack has meaning and impact - was his attack because someone really is tampering with the site? Or is it tied to the curse? From then on, the game plays out basically the same - you're trying to discover the real tomb before the culprit to protect the integrity of the dig site and prevent history from being lost, and simultaneously investigating who attacked John and is sabotaging the site.
    To me "Tomb" could have been a much better game if it had better structuring; I think the puzzles were fun and the setting was neat, but you're right, overall it felt like we were set loose without much direction. Good elements, but lacking in structure.

      Yes and the ending is such a downer with a Birds Eye puzzle then John suddenly appearing to save the day after being absent the whole time. 🤦🏻‍♂️ They could have had a much better confrontation with the culprit, and Nancy saving the day on her own and maybe escaping a suspenseful booby trap. Scarlet Hand had a neat ending this game could have as well but really dropped the ball.

    I really wanted to like Ghost Dogs more, but it's very uneven because you get sidetracked with the bird pictures/getting spark plug/collecting bugs/getting camo chores. I was disappointed that the game wasn't as scary as it was advertised - you only see the dogs once at the beginning!

  • @GraemeCree
    @GraemeCree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    White Wolf: I thought the cooking chore in this one was one of the best in the series, although you do have to do it too often, and schedule your time outside the house around it, which was a pain. Fox and Geese should be pretty easy (it's just a Checkers variant), but in the computer age, people tend not to have board game skills any more.
    Labyrinth of Fries: Yeah, near the bottom of my list. Unclear motives, bad dialogue, a set that couldn't possibly be used in a play, and one character who's in two different places at the same time for half the game. Labyrinth of Fries is my name for the recipe that WOULD have been based on this game if The Nancy Drew Cookbook had been based on the games instead of the books.
    Ghost Dogs: My appreciation of this one has gone up somewhat, but I still have some problems with it, one of which is that the Ghost Dogs only attack once, and Nancy can roam the woods at night without fear of them. Bottom 11 is a third of the series, so I can see putting it there, but it's not bad.
    Secrets Can Kill: Yeah, bad. Although oddly enough I like it better than Remastered, due to unintentionally funny things like Juvenile Delinquent Nancy, and Echo Nancy who just repeats what other people say. At least Aunt Eloise doesn't have a cage in her living room in this one. And it actually makes sense that she was called in by Aunt Eloise, rather than the Police or the school, neither of whom would trust an out-of-state amateur with a murder case.
    Trail of the Twister: We played this one fairly early (we played out of order), and we had had it in mind that one of the selling points of the Nancy Drew series was that they took place in good looking environments. Castles, exotic foreign locals, Victorian Homes renovated as B&B's, et cetera. But this game seemed to be filmed in Crap-O-Vision. It did an accurate job recreating a dilapidated farmhouse with plywood furnishings, but who wants to see that? And otherwise, yeah, the game is too much chores, not enough mystery.
    Tomb of the Lost Queen: The pointless Alien subplot drags this one down. (I wonder who at HER was so into that?) A problem I have with this is that if you're exploring a lost pyramid, THAT should be the story. Tacking a mystery onto that just because you've gotta have a mystery, seems gratuitous.
    Lights, Camera, Curses: Decent as Hidden Object games go, but not really meant to be compared with Adventure Games.
    Kapu Cave: Truly awful, although I sort of liked Quirky Quigley, especially the way she dropped out of a tree to talk to you. Wouldn't have minded if she'd turned up in a later game. But mostly the game is a pain in the frass.
    Midnight in Salem: The Worst Game, hands down. Barely a game at all, just an interactive movie with a massively repetitive plot. It feels totally different than the others because it wasn't made by HER. It literally is a different series. Best thing in this game is Creepy Deirdre hanging over your shoulder like a vulture.
    Shattered Medallion: All the characters in this one bored me, including Sonny, and it's not even clear what we accomplished at the end. I still wonder if there's an optional way to betray Kiri that people just haven't found yet. Best thing about this one is that it was the last of the Aliens, so I don't care how we got rid of that as long as we did.
    Ransom of the Seven Ships: This one's going to need a separate post.

  • @GraemeCree
    @GraemeCree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Ransom of the Seven Ships: I'd put this one somewhere in the middle. Perhaps one of the Bottom 11, but far from the very bottom. It's biggest problem is that players have been conditioned to believe that in a Nancy Drew game, the culprit, will always be someone standing out in plain view for the entire game. (Secrets Can Kill is maybe the only game that didn't do that). That's kind of silly, but it is the established pattern, and what people would expect. Reasonably speaking, Johnny isn't the ONLY suspect, but players would be conditioned to think he was, so the game should have pulled a swerve and gone some other way.
    It would have been the perfect fakeout if Johnny was a red herring, and Bess and George themselves were the culprits, playing a joke. I really believed that was the answer when I first played, and the "clue" was that George wasn't waiting on the dock when the plane arrived, and that her phone conveniently wasn't working. Turns out that wasn't a clue, just bad writing.
    I liked the Hourglass puzzle, but there were several I didn't like, maybe the dumbest of which was the cave wall magically turning into a slider puzzle. Underwater Sudoku is silly, but no more difficult than any other Sudoku.
    What gives me sympathy for Ransom is that it's been censored for political reasons, and nonsensical political reasons at that. The rationale for censoring it was a conflation of Blackface (a form of ridicule) with ALL disguise, which is patently absurd. (the point of a disguise is 180 degrees opposite to the point of Blackface). And it's especially nonsensical in this day and age, when you literally ARE whatever you say you are. If Johnny said he was Jamaican, he WAS Jamaican, period.
    But when the orders came down from HER that we were supposed to hate this game, a lot of people who had no problem with it before suddenly did, because they knew they were supposed to. Case in Point: In 2013, you named Ransom as one of the six BEST games. As late as 2019, Johnny's disguise wasn't mentioned as a problem in the "Everything Wrong With Ransom of the Seven Ships" video. Now the game is rated Zero. Obviously tastes change in 9 years, but Top 6 to Rock Bottom is a pretty big swing. I'm not blaming you, I totally understand. If you don't denounce the game, people will complain, but if you do, nobody will. (except me, and even I'm doing it nicely). Keeping people happy is one of the needs of a TH-cam channel, I totally get that.
    Personally, I think you were overrating it when you said it was Top 5, and are underrating it now. It does have some genuine problems, which you pointed out, but Johnny's disguise isn't one, nor really is the absence of characters. I didn't expect a desert island game to be crowded, that would defeat the point. Right before I first played this, I'd played another desert island game, Return to Mysterious Island, which makes Ransom of the Seven Ships seem crowded. That one's got no other characters, no monkeys, no parrots, just an environment to interact with.

      I agree with your analysis of the game. My only point of contention isn’t about your opinion of the game but your points about Blackface and disguise. I feel it was a complete oversight and agree that the intent was absolutely not to be insulting, but it was to some so we can’t ignore that. I will also say that I agree that people can be whatever they want to be as far as gender, religion etc but that does not apply to race or ethnicity. No where has that been celebrated or “allowed” someone that is not black can not just say they are black. Well, I guess they could but it certainly doesn’t make it true or doesn’t save it from criticism and hurt feelings. Or to your point Johnny saying he is Jamaican. He can absolutely be from Jamaica. Hell, as Dwayne, he could live in Jamaica. White people live in and are born in Jamaica. That does not give them the allowance to dread their hair and use an accent that’s not their own without insult others or seeming that the intent was to be insulting.
      That being said, we know HER did this to show Dwayne’s acting chops and back ground as a character actor. Which I thought was cool. They could have easily had him fake a really authentic sounding British accent. His work in Shakespearen plays would be a nice Easter egg from STFD. Or French for that matter.

    See White Wolf is one of those games where it's great if you're like me and actually genuinely love chores, especially cooking challenges. But I do see how those like you who hate that sort of thing how it would not be a good experience. It's similar to Ghost Dogs, I enjoyed doing the different chore tasks (though I do agree the bird hunting was a bit lacking). I also kinda enjoyed the Frass puzzle in Kapu Cave, oddly enough (though here I do also agree the story wasn't executed as well as it could and should have been.)
    I've said it before though, I have a very different preference of games than you though. I absolutely hate several games you love, like the Haunted Carousel for example, and vice versa I've found.
    Though I think everyone agrees collectively that Shattered Medallion is just objectively terrible 😅 I've never ever heard anyone try to defend it. It's just bad. Just plain bad. And the same with Random of the Seven Ships. Also objectively, plainly awful.

      I think Midnight in Salem would have been better if they didn't jump game platforms so drastically. I know the fandom placed a lot of pressure on wanting a game NOW but it honestly was barely playable. I think they focused too much on the appearance of the new platform instead of focusing on the knitty gritty of the game such as the puzzles, characters, dialog and plot. I'm hoping they won't make the same mistake as their new upcoming game.

    Twister I actually enjoy just because of the scenery and music and it being themed around Tornadoes🌪 Ransom I don’t mind either as a treasure hunt in beautiful scenery and El Toro’s story is kind of fun.
    I place Alibi and Device in my bottom five as well. Alibi feels so disorganized and gives me anxiety with all the character switching and that darn map of the town where the map is a puzzle and trying to figure out where to go, and the car moving all over. I'm still working my way through all the games, so I can't speak to your entire listing, but I DEFINITELY understand where you're coming from with White Wolf of Icicle Creek. Between the morning lodge tidying up and meal prep, I barely felt like I had time to focus on the mystery at hand. I actually had to stop maybe up to two-thirds of the way through when I tried playing it because of laptop issues, and I have not tried to pick it up once since that happened. The idea of starting over and doing all those darn chores again is just so off-putting, which is a shame, because I was enjoying the cozy, snowy atmosphere and learning about the wolf.

    Honestly, I liked Lights, Cameras, Curses more than the other dossier game cuz of the setting & story line. They could've done more with it tho and made it feel more Nancy Drewish. Or even make a different game that was similar in the main line of games.
    Personally, Midnight in Salem is higher on my list, but I respect why it's lower on your list and on a lot of others' lists.

    Okay I was kind of disagreeing with Labyrinth of Lies up until he said the characters say weird things. Okay, that is true, that is what made me think I just didn't understand people as a whole because the characters talked so cryptically and I just thought that was how normal people talked for the longest time

      The reason why I don't like The Wolf Creek one basically is if you go through it quickly in the beginning, it's hard to get that stupid clue from that idiot on the phone about the paprika. I just kept doing the same things over and over again. So, I watched AF's walkthrough to see who did it, and I thought, you have got to be kidding me. How farfetched.

    You know what I hated about Ransom? When Nancy first realised the guy on the beach wasn't who he said he was, and he removed the wig and said he was actually a fugitive from Australia.
    I gave HI a pass on the TERRIBLE accent he put on, because you could say he's an American just pretending to be an Australian, so of COURSE it's terrible and sounds nothing like what it's supposed to sound like. But the license Nancy found that made her realise he wasn't Jamaican? They used the imperial system for things like his height instead of the metric system. Two MAJOR problems with that:
    1. Anyone not from the USA / anyone from the USA who isn't a moron immediately would've realised it was a fake, so the second big reveal that the Australian persona was also fake was ruined. First time playing this as an Aussie, I pegged straight away, big reveal ruined.
    2. Either it was a mistake, meaning HI are morons who think a system used by literally only three countries is used by EVERY country, or it was deliberate to be some sort of secret Easter egg clue that the players would pick up but Nancy didn't - meaning they want us to believe that Nancy, who is probably one of the most well travelled teenagers in existance, wouldn't realise that almost everyone outside of the USA uses the metric system and therefore not get suspicious at the obvious fake.
    I have strong feelings about this, in case you couldn't tell.

    I mostly agree with the choices, but not the order. Midnight in Salem is the worst and is absolute garbage considering the TIME people had to wait for it. Kapu, Ghost Dogs, Twister, Ransom are totally forgettable. Labyrinth, Tomb, and Medallion are all such chores to slog through. At least Tomb is pretty.
    Blue Moon Canyon and White Wolf are the games that sucked me into Nancy Drew and the other Her games, but I agree WW is meh. I enjoy the setting, but the fact that you can go the ENTIRE game without talking to the culprit and another guest really kills it. Cooking, though, is not that hard! Every meal had a "slap it on the grill and serve it up" option and/or a more complex food. My sister and I knocked out cooking in a couple minutes each time by memorizing the quantity of each ingredient and just going down the line of ingredients. Now i really want salmon and salad....

  • @ranid0072
    @ranid0072 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you like a Google Maps Streetview or Geoguessr - you would like a ND: Midnight(mare) in Salem. But only if you ready to "very interesting dialogues". And for a lot zoomies back and forward... And for some really bad graphics...
    And graphics, tho. I mean, ND series not so "ideal" in graphics part, but other games have some aesthetics. And even kinda photorealism sometimes, which works nice. But that typical Unity engine graphics. Its just really hurts. Just try "low" settings. Its terrible

  • @ranid0072

    Lol, about the talking in Midnight in Salem, the new adventure games in general has a lot of talking. I never played the last Nancy Drew (because my computer is too slow), but I can say that there is a lot of games with talkings these days, like St Kotar, Sinking city, etc. I kind of liking it. It feels more alive from my point of view...

Every messed up thing that happened up until its release set the tone for it too unfortunately.

    11. Disagree, though Fox and Geese is annoying, but I think every game has one component I don’t like
    10. Strongly disagree and personally offended, one of my favorites
    9. Agree, definitely not a favorite
    8. I see your point, not bad for first game
    7. Strongly Agree. This one is probably in my top 3 least favorites
    6. Strongly Disagree, and again, I’m personally offended by this one, it’s a favorite of mine, but I love anything to do with ancient Egypt, so I might be biased
    5. Agree. Not much else to say
    4. Agree, this one was a bit of a mess. Alibi in Ashes pulled off the switching aspect WAY better.
    3. This game needed to be a lot better just because of the literal years we had to wait for it. Didn’t like Nancy’s new voice either.
    2. I have a weird relationship with this game. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. Depends on my mood.
    1. Agree, only played this one once, barely remember it, that tells me something right there.
