What an absolute nightmare. Don’t think we’ll be buying anything new, stick to the old reliable ones and employ people to drive them!! Cheaper to run, easier to fix and employ people!!!😂
I thought that the plan was to remove the fuel tank from the tractor. In the end you had to remove the tractor from the fuel tank. Great job team as always.
@jameschristie4596 what's the alternative? Pull a fuel barrel behind your implement? I think some of the 40 series use to have steel tanks right in front of the radiator and behind the rock box/weights but they weren't 192gallons either.
JD engineers: "It will be fine like we designed the fuel tank. Having to remove it is one chance in a zillion. Won't happen in the lifetime of the tractor."
dont know where to begin with the "genious" designers at JD. from the fact that they put a plastic fuel tank so close to the wheel, where even a rock could damage it, or that they made a 1-piece fuel tank that needs the whole tractor disassembled to replace it... your work is fantastic as always!!!
ZK. Thank you so very much for the walk along videos. I am an old farm boy and we had to fix our farm equipment because we could not afford to have our equipment repaired by the tractor dealer. I enjoy watching you make those repairs to the big green iron. We had the other green and red iron plus some orange MM combin. Please take care. Keep that iron moving along. 👈👍😎
Wow, it sure did become a project. Not only are you a forward-thinking tech , but also have a good memory. To remember where all the fasteners , wires , tubing and brackets go back on the tractor is truly amazing on your part !!
It's good to know off gate after reading the title that the fuel tank itself didn't fail on something so new! You're a great mechanic my friend! I bid you God speed in your work!
I went from being a high school student watching your vids to now being an intern for sydenstrickter doing the exact same stuff you do. Pretty cool. We actually have some tractors with Sloan stickers in our shop.
I would recommend the John Deere tech program to anyone interested in the field. It’s a real good way to get the fundamentals down plus hands on experience at the dealership for about 6 months before starting full time. Also if you have a great mentor like Zeth, it just makes the experience more worthwhile.
Its amazing that something so simple as a wheel wedge coming loose can cause so much work and expence. Its a good thing these farmers have you and Josh to fix these problems to keep the green iron turning! Excellent job as usual Zeth! Thanks for another intriguing video into these John Deere machines. 👍
Zeth for a first time removal of the fuel tank from that model, you made it look easy (which was only through the skills you guys have). Thanks again for your great videos.
I said it before-- man what a mess! I'm glad it's you and not me. Hats off to you guys working on the farm equipment. That looks worse than Class 8 trucks or garbage trucks. Yikes!
Thanks for a absolutely great video and a huge huge project being filmed. It was interesting and enjoyable for sure. Wow and more wow’s. What a huge project this was to replace the gas. Before I go farther and don’t laugh at me, I am surprised that John Deere does not have a replacement program for a major project like this instead of the local shop doing this. The local shop has a lot of time in this. Just saying. ZK and the new person, Zach I believe you said, my respect to you for tackling this project. You basically disassembled this tractor. Most interesting watching this. Thanks to the John Deere engineers for figuring this out, little humor there. I appreciate the attitude you had Thur this and just getting the job done. Believe I would have walked the other direction. So interesting what it takes to do some of these new technology tractor jobs. Amazing. Thanks for filming this ZK. Am totally in aw of you and Zach for doing this job. My compliments to you ZK. My respect to you. You take care and be safe. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for everything. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
Great video. I really like how you remaind cool, calm and collected in the face of the giant jigsaw puzzle you just completed. Look forward to the next video.
I just want to say thank you for some awesome videos. I was a heavy equipment repair tech. I'm retired now I enjoy watching the videos in the new technology. Amazing what you have to do to do some simple tasks. Either way appreciate all the videos. Take care be well.
People with your skills are amazing. It takes a special mind to be able to remember things and put everything back together. I enjoy watching you work. I have a small JD 2025R. Excellent tractor but no where in this class. Best regards from Castle Rock, WA
An automotive engineer once told me that car fuel tanks are quite literally designed by having the CAD software "select empty space" and putting a form around it as a first step. Of course that gets touched up a little bit and made cheaper to produce, but that's how they end up in the shapes they are. I can well imagine John Deere doing the same with this fuel tank, plus tidying up the lines and harnesses on top a little bit to go in more cleanly.
You do good work // as a customer I always cringed at tear downs of factory assembly like this but after owning a dealership for 12 years and having a great mechanic I now believe that the re-assembly by a great tech is better than factory and a lot of fine tuning gets done which makes the re-assembly like this at least as good as the assembly line and most likely much better
Thank you for the walk along with that fuel tank change out, what a large project. Please Take Care of your self Plus Be Very Care Full around all Equipment.
I am wondering where all this super--tech machinery will be in 30 years while the old simple stuff is still in the field working.......great video as always.
What a job. Your knowledge of the equipment is amazing. Even though you had not pulled a fuel tank from this model before, your working knowledge made it look easy. Love the channel. I really would enjoy spending a day with you. I’ll even buy the coffee and doughnuts
jesus christ! absolutly insane ammount of work! i would weld some random plastic piece on the hole, coated with liquid rubber and call it a day in two hours... btw. why has souch beast exposed plastic tank at all? let alone in close proximity of wheel?
Just did one of these this past July, right rear inner rubbed a hole in the tank in the same spot. There is a pip for this, with the tire set at 60 inches if the tank gets too hot and swells it can rub on the tire. So the tank was replaced.
Greetings from West Texas, No doubt the guys shadowing you are benefiting greatly, on a side note I’ve seen where the gear on the upper inner sleeve won’t engage the splines on the axle due to the welds on the tabs on the sides of the gear breaking, hope nothing but the best for you and your channel 👍
You know Zeth, I bleed green as much as the next guy but Wow deere engineers can screw the pooch in a hurry on this one. Thanks for sharing the fight on this one. Catch you on the next one. Have a great week
What's really going to blow is that tank will probably be discontinued in 20 years from Deere and no replacement will be available. I figure they got about 50-60 man hours in it before they even start putting it back together, which will take even longer. What's 100+ man hours going to cost in 20 years, because it won't be warranty work then? That's when you gamble and just fix the hole in a couple hours and keep on rolling.
I can't imagine the brain cells required to keep things straight so that the reassembly goes reasonably well. Taking apart appears to be substantially easier than going back together. Older models of tractors that had saddle tanks would have been a piece of cake for replacement when compared to modern equipment.
The tank is in a vulnerable place. Just takes a rock to come around stuck to the tyre and it'll tear into the fuel tank. I'm also amazed at the intricate shape of that tank. Would be interesting to see the process of making it - the mould/form for it must be complex.
Well, that looks like a product update on the way (or at least an idea for a proposal): make a final stop on the shaft/wedge, so the wheel can't damage other inner components when things are starting to go south for whatever reason.👍🏻💪 And a tank repair set would be nice 😜 You two look like a well oiled machine, tackling this challenge. Great video, as always.
U ALL R AMAZING WORK AWESOME HERO. CONGRATULATIONS ON JOB WELL DONE. I SURELY DIDN'T KNOW THAT HAD TO COMPLETELY TARE IT APART. LABOR RATES R REALLY HIGH. AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS HEROS
Doing this exact same job now. The right front cab mount bolt can be gotten to if you remove everything on that side first. Without having to do the extension rig up. Once that support brace for the side step is out of the way you can get right to her. Having all the exhaust off already helped to. Just an fyi for anyone else also doing this job.
I always wonder how it was to be a tractor dealer mechanic and your channel is entertaining and wow the repairs look complex. I never taught of been a dealership tractor mechanic and will probably will never be
It’s not for everyone. But the ones that choose to do it and master the trade, there’s not much they can’t fix which is really rewarding. I would be bored out of my mind if I didn’t have the challenges I face in AG. The more complex and larger the project, the more I love it.
Dang that’s a huge job!! Interesting video as always Zeth! 👍👍 The 8R wheeled tractor is one of my favourite! Deere did an awesome in making it! Lots of them around these parts.
Someone had some fun on CAD designing that tank. Goal, fill every spare space with tank so long as it can connect to another part of the tank. Bit surprised that it’s poly tank only in the wheel well with no protection. Car companies had the same drama here in Oz when they first put poly tanks in utes. Too many failures from rocks, sticks, wire and even roadkill taking off fittings.
That's unbelievable you have to take the cab off just to remove the fuel tank. JohnDeere didn't make it easy, but the quality is there. Going to be an expensive repair. Zeth with your knowledge and skills you made it so easy. In your technical field you definitely have a lot of responsibility as a technician but your awesome. Do you bag and tag the parts so know where everything goes when it goes back together? Awesome video as always. Keep the action coming. Seeya at the next one. Stay safe!
man alive u mechanics sure have to have a lot of schooling to work on them new style tractors give me the older tractors any day of the week so much easier to work on
Hello, it is interesting video. Had the same problem on the 8310r in the fuel tank was a hole. But we didint change the fuel tank that is fixable thing. The special guys come and welded and until now its fine. If you look at the fuel tank , you can t even see the marks that was welded :D

I'd like to think a guy would hear or notice the rubbing before it took out the tank. I figured it was going to be a PITA... and it was. Job well done as always.
I am neither an Engineer or Farmer, but considering how much mud can build up on tires and with rock or debris possibly imbedded would have thought a company if committed to quality and durability would have left large space between tires and frame, fenders, hoses or any other part then further protecting those items closest with sturdy steel shields. And if your going to use plastic parts anywhere, figure they are going to need replacement sooner than later and place them for reasonable access.
I bet Deere wished they had put a metal shield around the tank beside the rotating tires. What an expense just because a wedge got a little loose. What happens when your tire grabs a rock in the field.
The issue is more due to that size tractor having the wheels adjusted to 60” spacing to suit 30” plant rows. Obviously that is the absolute minimum spacing and as planters and consequently tractors have got a lot bigger a lot of growers have changed to a wider row spacing (i.e. 36” or 1m etc) just because of this problem. You'd have a repeat performance of what you just did on your hands. That's the kind of issue one discovers, when tractors are designed, using 3D software in a computer as opposed to an old school physical mockup, made by talented pattern makers.

Don’t mechanics miss old days of everything, plain & simple. What a disaster. Great work🤘🤘
Basically disassemble the entire machine to replace the fuel tank, that’s just crazy. Great video, thanks for filming this.
Your worker/helper shows a lot of effort. If he see's this, ZK's work is common sense. You'll
get there.
What a great design. Make the entire tank out of plastic so if you get a hole or crack in it you have to disassemble ~75% of the tractor to replace it
dont know where to begin with the "genious" designers at JD. from the fact that they put a plastic fuel tank so close to the wheel, where even a rock could damage it, or that they made a 1-piece fuel tank that needs the whole tractor disassembled to replace it...

You called this job "A Project"
I call it "A Pain In The Ass".
Your level of patience FAR EXCEEDS anything I could imagine.

no dont do it the half ass way on a machine that cost that much i'd want it done the rite way not cheap like that harbor freight shit
Thanks for all your videos.
I'm doing this very same job & it's great to show the customer what's involved.
Thanks!
I can only imagine what it must have taken to design that tank!! Wow! Every nook and cranny used for fuel capacity! Good job, Zeth and team!
More like, what asshole designed the tanks
All it took was one idiot engineer that drew it on a paper and never turned a screw in his/her life.

I’m amazed at how clean these machines are after so many hours in the field…..!
Probably had a bit of a powerwash prior to being brought into the shop. Last thing you need is a load of field crud messing up your workshop floor.

Man is absolutely gifted can do anything
That’s really going to blow when someone has to do that to a 20 year old tractor and nothing comes apart that easy!!! Great engineering there JD
What's really going to blow is that tank will probably be discontinued in 20 years from Deere and no replacement will be available. I figure they got about 50-60 man hours in it before they even start putting it back together, which will take even longer. If it's 20 years old it would probably get a patch. It could not be financially viable to do that type of job on an old tractor.
Your a bad man ZK! I got frustrated because I had to remove a foot board on my motorcycle to take of the primary cover. 😂
Great job ZK, Bruce in Oklahoma.
Just keep doing what your doing. Well done.

Great awesome video zeth , all because of a wedge let go causes a monument of damage
Great job! Very impressiv how you handel everything.

Hello, it is interesting video. Had the same problem on the 8310r in the fuel tank was a hole. But we didint change the fuel tank that is fixable thing. The special guys come and welded and until now its fine. If you look at the fuel tank , you can t even see the marks that was welded :D
great video.
i would hope john deere will pay you extra for these video's for future training for there tech support.
I worked at a John Deere dealer way back in the late 1960’s ………3020s and 4020’s was the tractor of the day back then. I don’t think I’d have the patience to work on these new tractors!😵💫
Man that is ridiculous! Good job on this video though, I was highly invested in seeing the progress of this one haha.
What a huge project! Very interesting.
That's just a different looking tank than what used to be on the 4020 4520 4620 era 😂. Could of changed them in three hours😊. A real good video!
I'd like to think a guy would hear or notice the rubbing before it took out the tank. I figured it was going to be a PITA... and it was. Job well done as always.
Plastic welded a few tanks for the forestry boys. Much easier. If you’re good at it you can match factory texture.
Is Deere picking up the tab on this one? Looks like a faulty design caused this problem... Great job fellas!!! Very professional!
Que tamque mais difícil de manusear. Tem que desmontar quase a máquina toda . Belo trabalho.
Heck that’s a brand new tractor to be having issues already, I see a lot of people are having issues with those seats kicking the auto steer out
Great awesome video Zeth , now this one was a fun one , even the new tractors get ripped apart also after failures!
Awesome vid..... you'd think there would be a shoulder or a spacer on the axle to keep that from happening.....
That was a good video zeth alot of work to take it out but good job guys
Again a great video, it is really a big tec puzzle, unbelievable!

Yah-
-I am unable to comprehend why there is no "skid-plate" type protection for the plastic part of the tank facing the wheels.
Was thinking the same thing that it should have some sort protection for the tank.
I bet Deere wished they had put a metal shield around the tank beside the rotating tires. What an expense just because a wedge got a little loose. What happens when your tire grabs a rock in the field.
Agree. I might opt to fab something myself to prevent this in the future.
When 60” spacing was adopted equipment was much smaller, like 4 & 6 row equipment, so tractors where much smaller.
I hope this gives you some background to why this has happened.
Why do you think Deere wishes that? You think this repair is being done for free?
Photographs do indeed help immensely. Can't believe that tank was designed with so little clearance to the inner tyre at 30" setting. Looks like you're out of adjustment on the Bar Axle too at that setting.
My concern would be if a rock got trapped between the tyre and tank, and gouges a hole in the new tank as the wheel rotates.
You'd have a repeat performance of what you just did on your hands.

Just another day at work. Sometimes i miss the getting up early to pay the bills. Much better when the bills are all paid off.
Those zoom booms are a lot of fun to drive!!!
That looks like a contraption fuel tank. I’m glad only worked on 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 series tractors , looked a lot easier to repair
Damn ..... who would've thought a fuel tank would have taken that much time? Pretty rough, well done!
This is a very interesting channel!
