Oh, that’s lovely, Barry! What I appreciate is that you didn’t dismiss it as “just birch” and paint it. It looks simple and quietly elegant. Well done!
I took that to mean he was happy to see it was birch. I listened twice. When they made that they used oak mostly only for utilitarian things. They didn't like a lot of grain, so birch or maple would have been a better choice for furniture. Unless a tiger oak or a burl, other woods were considered finer and less country or rustic.
I just built a bed using crap pine. I stained it but it looked great bare. Everyone’s favorite part is the grain pattern! “How did you do that?!” According to TH-cam experts, I messed up really badly and poof! Beautiful bed. 😅😂 Justice for all wood! Wood is *beautiful*! Edit: no disrespect for painting. Your furniture should look how you want!
And the light wood gives it a scandi vib. I am waiting to hear from him, but I am thinking there is no finish to damage. It probably feels like velvet.
Wonderful! I suggest you taking a photo of the previous condition of the piece of furniture, so as customers can realise how many efforts you made and appreciate your work. I've just subscribed. A big hug from the Alps (Italy) ❤
This would have been a piece overlooked by most people for the garish paint job and the oddly applied Fleur-De-Lis stamping. You did restore the chest of drawers to a useable, functioning piece of furniture. Great episode Barry.
By far my FAVORITE piece you’ve refinished!! I absolutely love the clear wax finish, I wish it were used more in projects on TH-cam. What a stunning, simple yet versatile piece!! I could see it as an entry table/console, an addition for extra counter space in a kitchen (perhaps even a makeshift island if it’s a small kitchen), even a sink vanity if someone wanted to convert it for that purpose-the possibilities are truly endless! 💝
It's a wonderful old piece. I love the clean lines without any unneeded fuss. Simply beautiful all on its own. Fantastic work, Barry! I admire your skill🎉 16:28
It's a cute little dresser for a child's room the way it is but I can't wait to see it in it's complete restored former glory when you're finished with it! ❤
Isn’t it wonderful to think that a tree can make something as beautiful as that with the help of skilled men. It is truly a beautiful piece of art. The natural quality of the wood is nature at its best and it’s quite sad that all of that was hidden under the Barbie pink paint. This is an incredible reincarnation of a lost piece. You should be very proud Barry, another beautiful piece resuscitated and brought back into existence. Xx
Barry, I really enjoy seeing the lighter finish. I usually go for medium-dark stains myself. I hope you had a fantastic summer and may all of your endeavor$ be more than enough. Peace be with you Barry Most sincerely from The Great Lake State of Michigan 🐢
I’m always impressed by your technique, your narrations and your decisions on finishes. Another monster turned back into plain but delicate piece of furniture! No one would believe they were the same set of drawers! Well done, again, Barry!❤️
I’m so glad you used wax as the finish. The natural color is so lovely. I appreciate your efforts to educate us and make refinishing old pieces an accessible project for those without all the high end gadgets. Keep up the good work, Barry!
I have that exact dresser. The screws are the same. The inside of it is exactly the same. It even has cracks in the same place. I painted mine, as arthritis and other physical problems , prevent me from doing the fine work you do. I can't wait to see what yours becomes😊❤
You saved this discarded ugly dresser life😊! Thank goodness you chose to take a chance on it! Love the natural finish an all the hard work stripping that ugly paint! Turned out gorgeous! 🥰
Although it was pink and white in the beginning it is now bright wood and natural. I do like the blonde pieces more than the darker ones myself. They go with any decor and blend in naturally. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day
I love that you gave such a simple, yet elegant finish. This hard working dresser would have been purchased and cherished by a proud middle class American family! Bravo Barry!
I am enthralled by your thinking in the process of refinishing. We benefit from your learnings. Grateful also for the treatment with wax for this church piece. Healing, the whole process.
I'm sure this was how it would have looked originally when it was new. Your craftmanship gave this a new lease of life. A true labour of love. Thanks for sharing.
@@tysonperna8844 faux tiger oak. I’ve a piece quite like it. Most of the finish remains intact, have to fix a few wear spots on the top. Well built old piece. Looks quite lovely in its natural glory, but would have come from the shop with the old dark tiger oak paint job as styles at the time demanded. Well done saving this piece.
Seeing you use dental tools brings me back to my happy place. I’m retired now but as a Vet Tech, I absolutely loved to do dental cleanings on dogs and cats. I’m not sure why I loved something that no one else did, but I found t so gratifying. Thanks for always bringing thoughtful content to your viewers. ♥️👍🙏
You really never disappoint Barry. I get so excited when my notification bell alerts me that you’ve posted. And I love love this natural look. Hope your travels have been good and relaxing. Thank you for all you do for us and bringing wonderful content. 🇺🇸
Looks great. I love finding things to refinish. Just finished an old buffet found painted and abused sitting by a dumpster. Its now my daughters bar area in her library.
The chest of drawers has turned out so beautifully. I particularly like the fact that you haven't painted it dark and that you haven't added any bulky handles.
I love the light color! I’m old enough that I grew up with blonde woodwork, then teak was in, lived through oak everything, then the dark wood craze and then gray everything. I love seeing the light colors come back.
It looks beautiful, Barry! I LOVE it when the natural colour of the wood is celebrated... especially after such painstaking removal of old finishes. Thank you!
Thank you for saving this chest. The natural wood is so much better than pink /lavender. I'm happy to see it restored to it's original beauty. If anyone complains about a piece being made of "just birch" so them a picture of this piece. Natural elegance personified. Awesome job Barry!
Looking at the back of the dresser, it was apparent that it had a lot more class than the garish paint would lead you to believe. Altho I would have opted for a stain, it still came out with a quiet dignity. Congratulations on saving its life.
Its wonderful Barry. We used to have one of those dressers in the basement to store my grandmothers fabric and lace. Yes alot of them were made during their time but few still exist in one piece. Beautiful result Barry ❤
Oh my, you did a phenomenal job on that old beauty. Love the light wood, my favorite is natural light wood furniture, like oak. You are a truly amazing at what you do. Keep it up 😊
That looks beautiful!! I really like the character of the imperfections too 😊 Between taking your time with sanding and the wax finish the wood looks like it’s buttery smooth! Well done!
Absolutely Adorable! So BEAUTIFUL! Fresh, elegant and classic! You never disappoint your viewers. Your workshop is the best, most practical and tidy that can exist! Thanks so much for sharing and undertaking this challenging restoration!
Every piece of wood, in every piece of furniture has its own hidden beauty. Leavinging it unpainted lets that hidden beauty shine through. As a chronic back pain sufferer, I have learned to bend at the knees, and use my legs to do the lifting. I'm semi retired, and work a hard labor job. This way I can keep going.

I'm not often so fanciful, but the reveal had me thinking I heard this piece heaving a sigh of relief. ❤

What I like so much about real wood is that it's durable, and fixable. It also has its own natural beauty.

Amazing!! You could just see the beauty under all that old "bubble gum" paint. Very nice job!! It looks so brand new now!!

When it was new it had that faux wood grain finish that was below the pale paint.

I've been a fan of "bare" for quite some time now...the new knobs were truly all the "glamour" it needed. 🎉
The finish is beautiful.
Your work always shows the natural beauty of whatever piece you are working on. I just love that!

Gorgeous. The natural waxed finish is lovely.
The chest of drawers has turned out so beautifully. I particularly like the fact that you haven't painted it dark and that you haven't added any bulky handles.
Look for old books on refinishing. The old guys give you recipes for finishes and the old style tools used. You can learn a lot from them
You did an amazing job. 😊
So refreshing to see this piece to be restored to its natural beauty.
I love the light color! I’m old enough that I grew up with blonde woodwork, then teak was in, lived through oak everything, then the dark wood craze and then gray everything. I love seeing the light colors come back.
What a sweet little dresser that turned out to be under your care! Beautiful job!
