In Happily Ever After, both the princess and the quiet are bound by their love and desire for a "happily ever after" moment. In this route, they are bound by chains that are the representative of themselves and their defense (remember how they can cut down these chains just by convince themselves they can?), when they cut down the chain and face the princess, that's the moment they finally got their defense down and see the princess for that they love her but love needs intimacy, thus raising such a high defense walls of chains would ensure no one could find love. The princess this route is the opposite of the princess in happily ever after. While in happily ever after, she believes in a dream of eternal love, doing the same thing without change. Here, she believes in love but she can't risk herself being hurt by the one she loves, thus, she barricaded herself in chain, doing the same thing over and over again in hope that the one whom she love could love her without hurting her. In both route, they failed.

Amd such beauty can only be witnessed by those to understand it. She doesn't care about love, she only cares about necessity. You can actually choose to follow her pattern normally but not cutting yourself free and instead dropping, or losing grip of, the blade, which causes you to lose you head as you and she witness the beauty of two headless beings fighting each other to death. Or you can choose to break the pattern by not bringing the blade (you need another voice) and end up freeing both of you. It's here that she finally finds it in herself to open up. In both those scenarios everybody wins. And the cage and HEA aren't opposites. They might have contrasting themes but that doesn't mean they're true opposites, unlike the Greys.

But if you decided that repeating the same routine would just lock them up more with more chains of emotion and you lost. Only when you decided to change yourself, only when you decided to leave the motionless love that you can defeat Smitten and win. It's about raising a wall so high so nothing could affect two person's love. Here, it's the same. It's about raising your own personal wall (symbolized by the chains and the blade). Only when you decided to drop the blade, you'd win by freeing both of you. That's why I said the princess failed both times. The princess is reactive to what the Quiet do and so, without the Quiet's decision, she bounds to fail in both cases.

And again we also win in Cage if we let her convince us that there is beauty to her pattern. And she doesn't need us to do that so she wins. It's better to give into this pattern and let it happen, since it's a better ending anyway. Leaving with her doesn't feel right, but I digress. My point is not all endings that seem like failures are actually failures. They're just different forms of victory.
This... It honestly felt as cold as the Long Quiet. It honestly feels like she is resigned to her fate, and the stagnant feel of the chained nest is oppressive. And from what was said about the Vessel... it feels like she lost belief in everything, even herself.

What wasn't justified however, what _was_ jarring, was the straight up execution by drowning seemingly because of it. And she did still hate him for leaving her behind anyway - well, her body did, but her head didn't. They're separate-but-still-connected beings now. So her hatred and anger is maintained via the body, while the head is left to resign herself to her fate, but to also see it for what it truly is.

I know you can get voice of the broken instead of the paranoid - I chose to wait in the void, hesitate to slay myself, and let the skeptic do it for me. If you do so, you can choose to drop the knife. Very Neat.
You can get either Broken, Cheated or Paranoid, and they lead to different endings. Getting Broken/Cheated is needed to get rid of the knife and Paranoid is needed to saw through the chains.
fun fact: if you get the cheated with you, you can choose to toss the blade away and leave with the cage

No you can. You just have to slay the Prisoner, which you could also do in the base game.
